Potential and Scouting

Post by lemming3k »

Pretty new to EHM, but I seem to recall reading that at the start of the game some young players have their potential randomised each time (like it is in FM). Is that correct?

I've noticed my reports on Letunov state he has limited potential and won't play in the NHL! I was pretty shocked for a player that was traded for Michalek and a 3rd round pick, I thought he was expected to at least make 3rd line! Of course I can't trade him back either...

I also notice you have to scout your own players to get potential ratings for them, unless I've missed something? Surely a franchise would know about their own prospects?

Yeah, I think Letunov's PA should be raised.

As soon as you draft or sign any player you get their attributes revealed to you. Any NHL franchise still watches their own players and scouts them to get the full story :).

Letunov wasn't in the list of player I edited for this season. So he hasn't probably been rated in a long time...
I took a look at him myself, and yes he needs to be better in CA and PA.

Yes that is correct. But it's not completely randomized.

Here's the list of potential we give young players:

-1 Potential will be between 1-20 (the worst young players)
-2 Potential will be between 10-40
-3 Potential will be between 30-60
-4 Potential will be between 50-80
-5 Potential will be between 70-100
-6 Potential will be between 90-120
-7 Potential will be between 110-140 (quite rare – a good prospect with a decent chance of being a regular NHL player)
-8 Potential will be between 130-160 (rare – a top prospect with a good chance of being a talented NHL player)
-9 Potential will be between 150-180 (very rare – a top 10 prospect who is considered a can’t miss NHL talent)
-10 Potential will be between 170-200 (extremely rare – the top player available in a draft, but not every year)
-11 Potential will be between 20-80 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-12 Potential will be between 40-100 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-13 Potential will be between 60-130 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-14 Potential will be between 90-160 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)
-15 Potential will be between 110-190 (intended for very young, hard-to-predict players)

How did you split McEichel? McDavid is a generational talent so he probably has -10, but then Eichel is a lock to be a franchise C, is -9 really enough for him?

I really think there should be a -16 aswell, for the hard to predict really good prospects :P 130/140-200? Or maybe just rework -11 -12 -13 -14 and -15, think they are too wide spread...

Well that was a tricky situation. We had some discussions about that matter and ended up putting Eichel at -9. I could have made him -10. But as it's not recommended having several -10 per year. Only 1 once in a while..
But then again, we had Ovi and Malkin 2004, who are more or less -10 guys.

Yeah, i understand that it's tricky... My 2 cents though is that Eichel should be -10, just look at what he's done as a rookie in college... most points from a rookie since Kariya and has a much better PPG then alot of all-star players (less games played though since he has only played one year)... Think of it this way, when is the last draft that Eichel would not have gone as #1? 2005 is obvious, any draft since? maybe 2007-2009 but he might have gone as #1 then... and he definitely would all drafts 2010-2014... I think that warrants him -10 :P

I think that you should talk with the devs about either adding more -XX PA settings or rebalance the ones they have, i feel like the gap is too big, especially between -14 and -15...

Well, to a point they will scout/watch them to see how they develope, but they will surely have some idea of the overall potential for the player already - unless the issue is really the way CA/PA functions.

I'd expect a team to know their own players, not to need to scout them for their potential as they've already been drafted/traded for. You don't do that on a whim. :p

I keep reading about potentials being randomized, can someone explain how it works....I ask because I traded for a player who had a POT of 170. I checked in the assistant and the guy I traded was about 132. I thought I had a steal. Fans were enraged :-D
Less than 4 months later I look and the player I got was 117 and player I traded was 160!!!....What the Dickens?
Can we see moves like this in a short time?
I can understand players becoming busts but Nov to Feb and he loses 53 potential points? :bs:

Use all the tools at your disposal, check your depth chart, scout your players and use your GM-sense :) There is no number that tells you exactly how good your prospect will be.

All the above. hire some good scouts (high attributes in judging potential) and have them scout different teams/leagues/nations. the player will then have information in the scout report tab which will give you an idea. Keep in mind that this can change as the player ages, but is a good indication as how a player will develop.

Yes, scouts can be helpful but they lie pretty often. Like third of a time I would say. Don't trust them. I had a prospect with 118 Potential Ability who was rated as 2nd liner by every scout. Had a prospect with 157 PA who was rated as 4th liner by a couple of scouts and limited potential by rest of them. The only way to see actual numbers is to use EHM Assistant.
By the way, guys in the depth chart (roster report?) are sorted exactly according their Current Ability number. But at the same time higher CA does not mean that player has better skills.

And hello everybody on this community. :) Sorry in advance if my english is not so good.

where can i find out the PA of my players? i don't mind using EHM Assistants.

as far as i am concerned once i have a players rights i should have an idea of his potential. i wouldn't want to see everyone players potential but i defiantly want to see my players potential

Makes me wonder weather the assgm "judging player ability" influences on this list? I always make sure my assgm has a 20 rating in that category exactly for the depth chart list. I'll probably make a test firing my 20 and sign some rubbish 1 rated assgm just to see if the list changes.

How did you see his exact potential?

I wasn't aware it could change like that, I thought once PA had been determined it was fixed, but no guarantee their CA ever reaches it.

Fans seem to always be enraged! I'm trading away good players sure but for good picks and they're going crazy about it. Like McDavid wasn't worth it!

If in doubt, offer your player up in a trade - the AI will know what potential he really has :p

Guys--

Scouting gets more accurate the more ways you use it, and the more times you see a player. But bottom line is if you want to do this without the "Cheat" of ehm assistant, and learn the potential of prospects

a. Scout the NHL draft
b. Scout the league the guy plays in,
c scout the team the guy plays for
d scout the player.

Scouting the player individually gives you the best read on him, as your scout will pay more attention to that guy and see him more.

Now you have to do this over and over and over to get the result that is closest. Wow...just like real life. It will never be perfect, which is the charm. Get to know what your scouts see and what they like. Get to know what players and type of players will work for you and your team.

If your scout sees a guy have a bad game and rates him...he will rate him low. A good game will rate him high. Need to see him a ton of times.

I tend to scout over and over and with NHL draft...I usually scout the 50-100 indiviudally as well, with different scouts. At least 3 see him 2-3 times.

Never perfect, and never use EHM assistant or editors to see the PA...no fun that way.

Plus the guys do not always reach their potential in those things anyway...so the Assistant/editors are wrong too! THey LIE! LOL...scouts lie? Not they do not they tell you what they saw. Get to know which of your scouts are good and which are bad.

Or do like I do and really look into the players in the game and see which will be good and bad, I get alot of later round picks that are good. Probably one every year.

also...do not give up on guys too early.

I know for a fact not many used Taylor Leier in the challenge, but he has done really well for me. Most gave up on him early. Kid will score.

I had no idea it could change that drastically that quickly....I still not even sure how it all works. But it makes trading these players risky. You dont know if they guy you trade blossoms or the one you trade for becomes a stiff....and what determines these changes? :dunno:

If you view the same player with multiple scouts you'll have a good idea. It's like arguing hockey with a friend. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

i'm pretty sure man management is an important stat for lists. I've signed two dudes, one with 1 MM and one with 20 MM and otherwise the same stats in potential, ability and youngsters and got wildly different lists. the guy with 1 MM was way off

Never thought of that. I know most of the other stats matter for coaches but didn't think anything for scouts mattered beyond the judging ability/potential (and adaptability if they changed countries).
What about determination?

Ah I should have figured it was some kind of scout/genie thing. I never use them, though I'm curious sometimes about how good my scouts are!

Are dynamic PAs in use? I'd have thought they could only change from an injury or age if at all.
