Struggling after a great start in EHM 2005, help needed

Post by Kopi »

hello guys,

I have just found this site and i love it..many info available as i can see.

I`m playing EHM 05 and the first time i started a new game starting in the NHL (normaly i started playing in Slovenian league and them promote to higher ranked leagues in Europe..). I had a very bad first season and was last in NHL so they almost sack me..I had 2 picks in the 1st round and i got 2 great prospects and one started playing in my 2nd line already.

2nd season started as anyone would dream on...I was leading the league...my first line Tkachuk-Yashin-Sykora (sp.?.) was killing the NHL...I played with 3 attack lines and 4 D lines as i saw that in that case we are doing better. Around new year team`s form started falling dramaticaly...my frist line almost couldn`t score...we had big problems in PP and PK...goalies didn`t keep nothing...I lost 10 games in a row and then win and then again started losing. There is 20 games left and we are 4 wins behind reaching playoff so you have to understand me Im widdled off! (but still the game is fantastic!)

Im asking you:
1. Did the AI read my tactic?
2. Should i change some lines?
3. What else can I do?

What went wrong? Well. the title of your thread started that. Something about struggling in EHM 2005 after a great start would be a better way to get answers to your questions.

Yep, change some tactics bud. Same ones over and over will get learned and beaten badly.

Kopi, welcome to TBL, maybe you should introduce yourself over in the arrivals forum.

We also have rules on topic titles that can be found in the the forum rules page and also in bold every time you post(just underneath the thread/post subject). I would advise reading over these and familiarising yourself with them.

Nothing lasts forever. You have to make changes when ever you notice your team is losing it's touch. Maybe it's the "human factor", or maybe your tactics get learned, but any which way, be quick to making changes - they don't need to be big ones. The more you wait, the deeper you'll spin, and the harder it is to bounce back.

Change lines, change line tactics, trade players, change practice, give a change to your promising farm players etc... the truth is out there! ;)

Welcome to the Blue Line!

I know it always helps to switch up the lines and see if you can find people who click with one another.

You would be surprised at what kind of change that can make for you sometimes.

too bad i didn`t know that before and lost so many important games so there is a small chance to get into playoffs...but there is always next year...

Have another couple of questions:
1. Would sacking a Head Coach do any good and would that be a smart anyway?
2. How to improve goalies performance and most important their morale as I think that is their biggest problem..

PS: also for next year i would like to get cheap but killing LW instead of Tkachuk (at least half price of him) as his contract run out and he is just to expensive...

Look at your teams Scoring, who is your 4th scoring forward, i would try replacing him with one of your 1st line players,
Also you may want to look over your first lines Stats, and set up who should pass/shoot and who should carry the puck, ect. You may also wanna have a Goon go out and fight, i have noticed that when i have a player get into a fight my team does better(they still loose, but they seem to get more shots, ect) it may just be coincidence but it can't hurt.
Throw in your back-up Give your starter a rest, that should get him back to top with 20games left i would say throw in your backup for about 5straight games, see how he does if he does well, keep him in. I haven't noticed Firing a coach helps any as i don't ever fire my coach it depends on his stats i suppose, if your team is young get someone who works well with young players.

For your next season, try to swindle a top young guy from a team, Depending on your team needs i would try for the likes of Getzlaf,Kopitar,J. Staal, J.Jokinen, M.Michalek,Cheechoo as they are all almost ready for line 1 play.

Kopitar would fit in like mama on papa :)

But i cannot buy his rights from Kings...they are not interested as he is bluechip prospect (even i offerd 1st picks, top players ,etc)...any idea?

You're probably killing your FWs if you only use 3 attack lines. 82 games is a very long season, you need to pace yourself. I always use 4 lines, and I find that if I use my first-liners in both PP and PK, by April they have nothing left in the tank.

I usually give my head coach the boot, if all else fails.

At least then I can explain to myself - it was his fault, now we'll do better. :-D

And sometimes it helps, especially if your team is better than it's performing. But firing him and not improving a team that is clearly not good enough to make it in the league as it is, is as useful as taking a bath in the toilet bowl: Feels refreshing, but you're still dirty after.

He would cost you more than just a couple of picks. It takes a mix of youngsters, proven roster players, some prospects and a few picks to complete such a deal. For me, it was J.Leopold, I.Baranka, M.Sauer, 5 promising prospects, 1th, 2nd, 2nd and 3rd rounders to pray him away. It's up to you to decide whether you can pay such a price. Probably you can find some other jems for less. But if you are, act as quickly as you can, 'cause he'll progress really really fast.

Ok, as you advise me i made changes in lines...i put my 2nd line in 1st and vice versa. The team play has turn around and we win some and lose some but it is better.

I try to get Kopitar`s rights (as he is still playing in Sweden) but i couldn`t..i offerd 2 picks in 2007 draft, tkachuk, 2 unsigned prospects that will probably make it to NHL and Ricchi and they refused..well i will focus on other players reather.

This year we won`t make it into the playoffs but next year is playoff for sure..

Try Something like this to get Kopitar away from LA

Tkachuk, 2007-1st round, 2007-2nd round-2008-2nd round, a ***Prospect, a *** Prospect, and a Minor Leaguer already playing on your team at most ***. If that doesn't lure him away Then it just isn't ment to be.

Ok, after 5 years i started to play again EHM 2005...this time i had a goal to start in lower level and move up to NHL..I used in the game that i`m American as if i would use Slovenian citizenship I wouldnt be able to come close...

Ok i started in USA in CHL team Youngstown and 1st season almost came to playoff...the 2nd season i achive playoffs but was defeated in 1st round..after 3 months in my 3rd season i got an offer from OHL team Toronto St. Michael`s Majors. I accept it and finished the season great..as regular champ, playoff champ and memorial cup winner...same happen to my 2nd season with Majors (except regular season champ). My reputation is 4th in Canada and around 100th in World. I also helped Latvian national team to achive Olympics and move to Group A of WC. Now in my 3rd season i got from board that they want to win OHL again and all my best players went in NHL..so that will be almost impossible to achive!?! I got an offer from one Russian team that is always among last ones but i dont know should i move or not? What should be my next career move?

Ok after ma 3rd season with Toronto st.Michael`s Majors i wasnt as successful as before so i lost in semis of OHL. There just wasnt enought talent in my team. Since it is a season 2009/10 (EHM 2005) i played with my Latvia national team in Olympics (lost all the games) and also in WC Group A and avoid relagation without a problem.

Then i used the save game editor and put with my 1st nationatity in the game (American) also my RL nationality (Slovenian) so i could get a job in Slovenian national team and after WC i got it.
Well since there are some players that have Slovenian roots and not good enought to play for Canada i helped them to get Slovenian passport and will hopefuly play under my helm. So Belak brothers (RIP Wade), Stajan and John Jakopin will hopefully soon play for Slovenia.

So goal is still to become a GM in NHL and since i was doing so good in OHL i hoped Toronto would take me as my rep. in Canada is on 4th place but i guess i was wrong..

Anyway now before the season 2010/11 i just got an offer from Swedish top division team to take them over..(i put the rep of the league to 13 as they are Finish, Russian and Czech league...seems more realistic). OHL is at rep 9 i think so this would be a nice step up but again kinda got attached to my OHL team :)
What do you guys suggest? You think i can jump from OHL to NHL or that would be almost impossible?

Also notice a interesting thing and i kinda like it...Oveching played 2 season in DEL (rep 11) and just run out of the contract...i hope he will sign in NHL now as that would somehow be realistic way if he already accept DEL. Never ever happend to me this before so need to check if anyone else from big names sign in Europe.

During my 'unemployed to the NHL' campaign I signed Kolvachuk at a newly promoted Russian Super League team. $30,000 per week and he was top scorer, points and assists for 3 seasons straight then he decided he'd had enough and returned to the NHL.

Rich Peverly (not the biggest name) Sign for the Belfast Giants in the UK Elite League and did stupidly well

You mentioned the Swedish top league. On my game (all during the same save these) Frolunda Indians were unstoppable. They had easily the best team on the game and they managed to sign and keep.. ok its late and im sat at work I've forgot their names, it was one of the Red Wings top D mean and another one

Thanks for info.

Just notice that i couldnt edit before the reputation of the league (Swedish top from 11 to 13). Probaby as editor dont match the update version im using. But it does help me to add nationality to myself or make some canadian slovenians actually to play from Slovenia...never try it but thats a goal.

Anyway was thinking a lot either to join Swedish team or not. I decided not to (at least not for now) as i think i might have a great season ahead in my OHL team (also kinda like working with youngsters and try to make them NHL guys but it does upset me when they take them before ready and that makes my team much weaker). Anyway taking Swedish team would ofcourse help my national team as i could bring some of Slovenians to play there...why am i saying that is as john jakopin at 35 and 3y playing in Europe just recived and offer from AHL and NHL teams (there goes my plan to play him in WC for Slovenia) :-k

Anyway cant belive how much fun i have with the game even its 8y old... =D>

Anyway its mid of december 2010 and I send my CV to Phoenix Coyotes and they invited me to take them over as GM! So in my 6th season i recived an offer from NHL! 2 and a half years in CHL Youngstown then 3 years in OHL Toronto st. Micheal`s and now NHL! PHO is around 8 wins from playoffs spots and thats is their goal for this season..

Anyway with Toronto in OHL i had this half of season the season not to remember so im happy i recived NHL offer or mostly likely i would have to resign or be fired.

With Slovenia im winning challenge cups without a problem...of the Canadians with Slovenian roots i only so far had a chance to play with Belak brothers as others are playing in AHL.

Ovechkin...after reciving all the awards possible in DEL he then become a world champion with Russia and also best play of the tournament...after that WAS sold his rights to NJ (so i guess they give up on him returning or what the hell is that?). In october he signed with Mannheim in DEL and already leading in points and the team is on top of the league. So what the hell happend here?!?! That never happend to any of my EHM 05 games? Any explanation?

Anyway as PHO GM i will try to get those rights and get him in our franchise! And Kopitar..as LA Kings dont play him as they should (only around 40-50 points per season).

Will keep you updated if anyone interested...

Thanks CeeBee.

So taking over Coyotes and in first 10 games recorded 8 wins...my lineup is like this:
G: KOLZIG
DL: Colin WHITE DR: ORPIK LF: SEMIN C: JOKINEN RF: AFINOGENOV
DL: D. McGILLIS DR: B.WITT LF: STILLMAN C: LECAVALIER RF: Jeff HALPERN
DL: D.TARNSTORM DR: Thomas HICKEY LF: Brandon PRUST C: Steve BEGIN RF: Alexandre DAIGLE

Guys in bold where taken from free agency under my helm. I have also on injury list Trent Hunter but will still out for another 3 months..
Now that i put the frame to this team that most likely will also finish the season with this lineup i will have to check all the guys contracted and all the prospect that we own rights. Lots of work

Devils want for Ovechkin rights a 1st round pick in 2012 (next draft is 2011) and one goalie prospect who is still in CHL but should be big time goalie in the future. Now should i take this or not..Jokinen is not gettin any younger and with Ovechkin in that position would be great. Then again big time goalie might also come good as Kolzig is 40 now..If i go for Ovechkin i just hope he wont do something stupid and staied in Europe again...cant belive that probaby player with one of the biggest potential in EHM 05 spent already 3 years in Europe.. :-? Happen someting like this to anyone? :-k

Prospects will break your heart but Ovie might too. I am always extremely reluctant to trade away prospects too soon. I'd either try to rework the trade or not do it if it was me.

well point is the team i have now is honestly more or less build for the season..i know i have to change a lot and get young guys as some of the oldies goldies here are overpaid ...good thing is to mostly that they will run out of contract this season.

More or less i decided i will go on Ovechking and risk the draft pick and goalie prospect (they always normaly need very long time to become NHL goalies anyway). Ovechking is 25 so we have here an franchise guy and i want someone like him to develope my concept around him..

Funny thing is that in last two junior world championships Slovenia end up twice top 4 (once even playing in the finals). I guess our guys reach potential very quick as they play a lot in domestic championship.

Anyway, just made a big reorganisation of the team and hired top scouts and now working on coaches then i will go over to my picks and other signed players in minors..defenetly a season to work a lot before making a team that i can say it has bride future.

Any of the guys you recommend me maybe for a goalie?

Ok finished the season and was 2 wins from the playoffs but very happy from what we done so far. Had to change my roster a bit as Trent Hunter recovered from his injury and as best paid player we were over the cup. I got rights for Ovechking and he demands 350 000 € per month (in Germany he signed for something like 30 000 € per month and won 2 seasons in a row DEL). Anyway i have now around 250 000€ to offer Ovechkin but if i can somehow get rid of Hunter would be even better...
I need to have some spare money also for Afinogenov as he is now on 90 000 and will for sure want much more next season..

So need and advice:
- since noone is interested in Hunter should i take a risk and buyout his contract? Or what do you guys normaly do in cases like this?
- also will Ovechkin drop his demands for salary in the middle of the season? So i can wait and maybe bring him later..

thanks for any help and your thoughts!

Hey guys,

im writing here as i guess this is my "problem room" ;)

Anyway in my coyotes game something happen that i just cant get it. I have two older guys that been with me for like 7 season and i want them to retire in our jersey..one is O.Jokinen and the other Afinogenov.
Both were just brilliant over the past season but now both 38-39 and i moved them to 3rd line which is still very attacking one (also tactic is set like that). Anyway i understand that speed and stamina decrease on both (still solid around 10 all) but come on last year they were still having 7,5+ average ratings but this year i can be happy if they get 7 in a game. Not to mantion there are many games they get only 5 rating and im talking here few games in a row! What the hell happen with them!?!

Now i dont even take them to game but still keep them in roster till their contact runs out at the end of the season. Must be fair they gave me some great seasons for my team but again they are a bit unsatisfied in last month as they want to extend the contract...and daddy wont do it!!! [-X
