The players on your team don't become UFAs until July 1st. Up until then they are players under contract to you and you can renew their contract at any time, just like the players that will become RFAs on July 1st. Once July 1st hits, if you want to sign any of your players that have become UFAs, they're going to count against the UFA tier. The part about signing between June 1st and October 1st (it's actually May 1st and October 1st) applies to your unsigned prospects, players you drafted but don't have under contract yet.

I think a lot of people get confused by the whole "UFA" and "RFA" thing. The "FA" in those stands for "Free Agent". If a player is under contract by you (or another NHL team for that matter), they are NOT a free agent. Once their contract expires they become a free agent, either restricted or unrestricted. So you can re-sign your contracted players at any time. You've got that window to sign your un-signed prospects and RFAs (players you had under contract and their contract expired but you still hold the rights to), and you've got the UFA Tier system that allows you to sign UFAs (players whom no NHL hold rights to).

Does that explain it?

Yes. Thank you for the explanations, both you and Manimal.

Quick Question,

I looked around and could not find the answer so Ill ask it here.

What screen shots are required for the end of season 1?

Posted: Tue Aug 04, 2009 6:51 pm

One remark regarding the rule 12.2 and the posted mandatory screenshots: they cannot be taken on June 30th because the game data is updated during the night from 29th to 30th. It means that you get empty player stats for current season (all stats are zero) on June 30th.

I always thought it got updated when you transition from the 30th to the 1st? Anyhow, the Standings, Player Stats, and Playoff Results say that you must take them in the month of June and the Trades screen must be taken on July 1st. That should cover things, right?

Yes, that should, but it's not precisely said. The three screenshots must be taken between June 1st and 29th. They cannot be taken on June 30th.
I wanted to take my screenshots at once and since the Trades screen has to be taken on July 1st I decided to take the rest screens one day before. And I couldn't. ](*,) The stats were already updated for new season. I'd be glad if someone else can check it when he comes to time of capturing screenshots.

When I get to that point, I will take a look.

I have a question about screenshots. In the season stats screenshot, do we have to include a player or players that were waived during the course of the year? For example, I tried to pass Maxime Talbot through waivers, but he was picked up by Edmonton (I think, might be wrong). Do I need to include his stats in the screenshot?

He's not a part of your team anymore, so he doesn't count. That also means that you don't count him if he was a leader in a certain category, say like PIM or something. If you go to the example stats screenshot, you should see the exact screen you need to take. Players that are no longer on your team don't factor into the challenge in any way.

Posted one game early in the 21-40 games, and in the first 20 games, the Team PIM would set as a date, so I left this blank and forgot to fill it in. And I forgot the challenge number... BOTH times.

Go ahead and repost the two segments correctly and I will delete the old posts.

Cool cool thanks Bruins. Also in season 1, Mason and Bernier are both in their OHL and LHJMQ team, and Backstrom got injured... can i sign a free agent goalie?

As well... are their any trade restrictions.. etc. the amount of trades we can do in the offseason?

I'll let Bruins handle the goalie issue, as I'm not quite certain how he would answer.

In terms of trades there is no offseason. Season One Ends 11:59 PM of June 30. Season 2 begins 12:00 AM of July 1. You have until 12:00 AM on July 15. The window then reopens at 12:00 AM on October 15 and closes at 11:59 June 30. You have 2 trades you can do in season 2 period so if you use them both before July 15 thats it until July 1st of the next year. The June 30/July 1 is the same cutoff for a season every year as well as the no trades during July 15-October 15.

Honestly, that's something you should have considered before sending them down. You should have your 2 NHL goalies and at least the 1 on one of your minor league affiliates to call up in case of injury. Will it let you recall either Mason or Bernier from junior? No free agent signings will be allowed in the first season. Any other free agent signings must be made during the designated time (see the UFA signing rules). Also, where are you in the season? I see your 1st season's stats are already posted. Did you finish the season short a goalie? Is Backstrom injured in the offseason? If that's the case... why are you worrying about it?

As for trade restrictions and the the amount of trades you can do in the off-season... you really need to go back and read the rules. That's a whole section of the rules! I don't see how you could have missed it.

Bruins, just so its clear if Crawford and Backstrom go down for atleast 2 weeks then section 8 applies as long as it is before May, right?

by bruins72
Yes if both go down in the regular season and neither Mason nor Bernier are on your main roster or one of your affiliates. In the off-season it's not an excuse to get a free signing though. Also, per rule 8.4, that goalie that is signed as the emergency replacement must be waived once you get a goalie back.

correct me if I'm wrong, but...

as per the Gameplay Rules and the Cheat Sheet... Not as a UFA signing

if he's yours (Unsigned prospect / RFA) - Yes

I can't see anything in the rules regarding goaltending injuries that apply to Mason or Bernier as they are under the age of 21 in the first season

That's correct.
