The core players are the core. You have the 10 you pick the first year. Then from those 10 you have 7 in the second year. No adding in new guys as you said.
For example I have Heatley on my team, but at no point will he be added to my core to replace someone else.
The core are always players who you name at the start of the game, and are original Hawks.
As I said in the other thread...forget which one....after the first season the A,B,C, only matters for the number of games you have to make your player play. The core can be any 7 of your original 10 in year 2.
Does that help?
You can add 2 UFA's per season to your roster but not to the core group.
Oops--Yes a core would be a homegrown, from year 3 on the previous season's homegrown must be part of your core.

Core players need to be announced at the beginning of the game for the whole challenge.
Homegrown players need to be announced before a season starts alongside the core (not in the first year though as there are obviously no homegrowns), so you don't have to know which prospect you're gonna use as your homegrown 3 years from now on, but your homegrown must be signed before draft day one year back. So, for example, your 2008-2009 homegrown player must be signed by you before the 2007 draft.

IIRC, the previous year's homegrown must be kept for one season after he's a homegrown... correct? I was under the impression that you don't have to have your year two homegrown on your team in year 4.

Yes...homegrown season 2 is core season 3. So if he is a star, he can be core season 4,5,6,7 as well...Once he is in core, can remain in core.
But at the minimum a Homegrown must stay on your roster for 2 years. 1 as HG, one as core.

Are you having some trouble with some of your core players Catchup?

UH, you could say that.

Okay..forget the stuff written above about core/homegrown. Here is how it works
Year 1: 10 core
Year 2: 7 Core, 1 homegrown
Year 3: 5 core, Year 2 homegrown, Homegrown
Year 4: 3 core, Year 3 homegrown, homegrown
Year 5: 1 core, Year 4 homegrown, homegrown
Year 6: 1 core, Year 5 homegrown, homegrown
Year 7: 1 core, Year 6 homegrown, homegrown.
**Yes, the homegrowns when they are moving into their 3rd season can become part of the core roster. at that point they would continue to progress under group C's schedule.
I have an example of the spreadsheet, with my picks for Year 1 core in it
here.
Sorry if I caused confusion previously, or now. I read my own rules wrong! Argh.

Thanks Bruins....So you all know I have added the above example, and the table to the ROSTER RULES.
Another Quick Rules Clarification

We can initiate a trade during the no-trade periods but can't complete them. Is this correct? I'm on Sept. 2 and would like to start trade negotiations soon so they can be concluded as quickly as possible after the the no-trade period ends. Please clarify. Don't want to break the rules, but don't want to sit around unnecessarily. Thanks.

My friend you are not only a Hypnotist but a mind reader. I asked both Bruins72 and CatchUp this via PM a few hours ago, as I want to know if I could make offers on 8th/9th September, delay them and only confirm them after the 15th September date. I should imagine it would be OK, but I want to be sure.

No, you cannot open trade talks until September 15th. The whole idea behind these rules is to take the easy part of trading (the ways to exploit the game's weaknesses) out of the challenges. It's just far to easy to trade at that point in the season. If you start working on your trades in August or early September and just don't accept them until the September 15th start date... it kind of defeats the whole purpose of the new rules.

Will get around to clarifying this in the rules. I have been away all weekend, camping. So tired..so hungover.

For the homegrown player, he must be eligible to win the Calder, and there's a limit of age for that... But at which date his age is taken into account?

This should be really important for players bornt around the start of season (or earlier if the date that counts is earlier)

The date he would make his debut. Noone who will be 24 can be your homegrown Shadd. Must be under 24 when he starts, and be 23 or less for the season in question.

So if my brain works well (i have some doubts, but who knows

) he must 23 or under for his first game of his homegrown season, right? I think it's like that, but just ask to make things crystal clear once and for all...

Yes, he must be no more than 23 when he plays his first game as a homegrown. You can't have a guy play a handful of games one season when he's 23 and then make him your homegrown the next season when he's 24.

Hi. I have a question. Some of my core guys are refusing to negotiate new contracts and will become free agents at the end of the season. Can I allow them to leave and sign them as UFAs and still have them on my core, or can they never leave my team, even as UFAs?

Posted: Sun Aug 12, 2007 9:28 pm
by Shadd666
laskey: I think this has already been answered...
If you re-sign them, even after they've been UFAs, they are still your players, like they were before hitting the market, so they are still eligible to be in your core.
However, be sure to match the required number of core players for the following season. If your guys go on to free-agency, are signed by other teams, and leave you out of option for your core selection, it would be a disqualification from the challenge.

Thanks!

I've managed to resign many of them anyway so I should be fine now.

You'd better be within the rules buddy, else i don't think you will be given a third chance
However, good reflexe to ask before acting, and so don't take the risk of breaking the rules incidentaly

Hey not really an issue that has come up, but I got to thinking and wondered what the ruling would be on this. If you offered a tryout to a player would that count as one of the ufa signings if the player did not specifically come from "your system". Example. Player A goes down with an injury for a couple weeks. You don't really want to pull anyone from your AHL club because of injuries/reentry waivers/whatever. You offer player B a tryout contract till player A comes back. Would player B count as a FA signing or not?
