Not sure for practice, but it's HIGHLY recommended to run practice yourself... Even if you're new to that section, you can't do worse than the AI. Plus, there is a thread here at TBL about practice with tons of valuable infos to help you getting started
Someone will correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm 99.9% sure that yes, you have to declare your core roster prior to game 1.

But we can wait until game 1....as in we can go thorugh training camp then declare (which makes the most the sense)

Yes go through camp then declare.

Some of us just went ahead and declared our cores early but as long as you do it before you play your first game, you're good.
Let me also second what Shadd said about practices/training. You should really consider checking out
this thread about practices. There's tons of great info there. If you even pay a little bit of attention to your practices you can do so much better than letting the computer do it.

That's cool that you mentioned the practice thread, I'm reading it in another window ...

I was wondering...do you have to have the TBL challenge stat calc v4.0...because i cannot read my microsoft office product key on the bottom of my laptop...so I cant use excel or word...i can only view documents with it

I think without the spreadsheet you're bound to make some mistakes with the stats. It just leaves you open to that possibility at least. If you can use Excel, you could always download Open Office. That will allow you to open and use Excel (and Word as well). Check out openoffice.org I think.

Alrighty im downloading it now, thansk heaps mate...this is my first attempt at a challenge so I'm guessing it would make my life alot easier if I can use the spreadsheet..

Yeah, it's possible to do it without the spreadsheet but there is such a high likelihood of messing it up that we really discourage it.

okay i tried searching for this but i couldn't find anything, so i probably doing the searching wrong (since its had to have come up before) but like i said i can't find it so my bad if its already been asked.
How do you record a stat if 2 players are tied for the lead in it? like in the current challenge at the end of 20 games, york and Reinprecht are tied for +/-. do i put both their names or?

I usually do. I put something like York/Reinprecht on that line. I had that happen to my a bunch of times in the Blackhawks challenge and probably plenty of other times in past challenges.

I'd like to join the challenge, but we have to coach the games.. I tried it and I'm not sure what the difference is between setting the tactics and letting your coach run with it and coaching the games yourself? I must be missing something...
So far the only thing I did was pull my goalie.... and then realized it was the end of the 2nd! sigh. So coaching myself has not gone well so far..

The game simulates things a little differently if you actually go into the game (coach the game yourself rather than set the tactics but don't "watch" the game). To keep things fair, we have everyone coach the games. I used to play the game where I would set the tactics but not coach the game myself. Honestly, if you set the various speeds to fast, it really doesn't take that long to go through a game. That's what I do now. There are benefits to doing it this way though. You can make adjustments between periods. If a guy is playing poorly, move him to a lower line and put somebody else into his spot. If a guy is injured during the game, you can take him out (rather than let him continue to play in some instances and get a worse injury) and juggle your lines. I also like to change my line usage during the game. I might go through the first two periods with normal line usage but for the third period I might go to just three lines, taking my more penalty-prone players out of the game or if I'm behind I might switch to overload so that I'll be pushing my first two lines more.
It's really all about more control and more options. Plus, it's done that way so that everyone is playing the same way. We've got to keep it fair.

To be honest this is the first time I've ever played this way...watching the game and I've already learnt a whole lot more, and what my weaknesses are and how I need to improve, and what type of player I'll be looking to draft. While it can be a little boring at times watching little numbers and shapes moving around, you can learn alot, and see what player is struggling, and what player isn't...sometimes average ratings lie a little.

I know we have to supply screenshots of injurys, but how long fo an injury? I have Doan, Morris and Reinprecht all out at some point with injuries last 2-3 weeks? (2 for Morris and Reinprecht and 3 for Doan). Do I have to supply a screenshot for those? I do have them, I just don't knwo if I need to post them.

Loosie: It all depends... Are they in your core roster? If yes, and if the various injuries prevent them to reach their required number of games played, then you'll need to post a screenshot proving the injuries (and therefore proving that you absolutely couldn't have them to play their games).
Btw, injury screenshots have to be posted at the end of the season, where you still have the opportunity to see the injuries historic in the player's profile and take a screenie of it.

You have to provide a screenshot as proof of injury if a player is going to be out enough that he wouldn't make his minimum number of games. So if a player isn't a part of your core, you don't need a screenshot at all. If the player get a long-term injury, one that's going to last a couple months, you can count on him not making his minimums, so go ahead and take that screenshot. If you've got a guy that keeps getting injured for 2 weeks here, 10 days there, and another week over there... and then he doesn't make his minimum number of games, you could always go to that player's profile, click on history, and then change the view to "injuries". Take a screenshot of that and it should show his various injuries and the length of time he was out for them.

I can't find an exact statement, but from how I read it the required goalie games is the minutes in the brackets?
So for myself Auld (as a group C) would be required to play at least 2100 minutes (~35 games) in Season 1.
Correct?

That's correct. Goalie minutes played requirements are in the brackets.

Ok cool, will do that instead, and yes all 3 of them are in my core group.

Another quick question. I'm playing with older rules and it states no trades between July 15 -> Oct 15th. It does not mention waivers so I would assume they are allowed? In the screen shot of the 'Transactions In' there is a waiver pickup in September.
Just want to make sure I don't get booted before I post my first stats lol.

Waiver claims are okay for for any time with the "Original Recipe" rules. We just wanted to cut out trading for that early portion of the game so that people would actually take the time to get acquainted with their roster before trading anyone away.

Ok so I don't know if this is the right thread for this or not. But here goes.
Right I have read the rules and from what I gather there is a no trade period from July 15th to October 15th, so that means then when October 15th passes I can trade and only sign free agents in the off-season?? Obviously I can't trade the 10 core players... but is everyone else ok to trade??
Oh I forgot to mention, but I'm playing by the old regular rules.
thanks

With the old rules, you are free to trade anyone other than your 10 core players but you may not do so between July 15 and October 15th. Also keep in mind the rules about trading draft picks. Free agents may only be signed in the off season. We changed this (you used to be able to sign UFAs at any time) because people were signing star players as UFAs for super cheap money if nobody had signed them until later in the season. Also once you are allowed to sign UFAs, you're limited to just 2 of them.
