Challenge 38 - Season 3
After a 2nd Round Playoff loss against the Kings, we decided to change some things. with Couture , Johnson and Smith on our possible trade-list we hit the market. Suddenly, as Groesnick decided to leave the team for Free Agency, we were in need of a backup goalie. There were only a few targets left (Ullmark 25, and the price for Demko, Vasilevsky was much too high) so we decided to bring in a young goalie with strong upside in Mason McDonald.
Out:
Groesnick left for FA, Tarasov, Tennyson, Doherty traded for picks
Couture, Smith, E.Johnson and Boyko got also traded.
In:
Goalie Mason McDonald + 5th Round Pick traded for Johnson/Smith/Tennyson
Aaron Ekblad and Goalie Daniel Vladar + 4th Round Pick traded for Couture/Doherty
Sam Reinhart traded for Boyko.
Lines:
Nieto (Goldobin) - Matthews -Wingels
Hertl - Monahan - Nylander
Goldobin (Fiala) - Reinhart (Dano) - Konecny
Dano - Kalfirt - Hartman
(Fiala, Emanuelsson and Boyko served as substitutes)
Müller - Ekblad
Murray - Ristolainen
Zadorov -Larsson
(Djoos)
Stalock - McDonald
The season preview had us 30th (won the cup) and 29th (lost in 2nd round to sc-winner) the last two seasons. For 2018/19 they ranked us No.1. - i couldn't hold back a grin, when i saw that. Let's see how the changes work....
Last Seasons Achilles-heel, the PP, got off a strong start and was good throughout the whole season (18% - which is much better than last seasons 12%).Our "1st line shuts down opponents 1st line" tactic was sucessfull again.
New 1st line center was Matthews. Our high scoring 2nd line with Hertl - Monahan - Nylander was outstanding again. With a Midseason trade for Sam Reinhart we got some scoring points that Boyko couldn't give us. Also on the 3rd line with rookie
Konecny was our "breakout player of the year" Nikolai Goldobin. He scored 62 Pt. while Konecny (51p) was Runner-up for the Calder.
Our Defense got much better with the additon of Aaron Ekblad (47pt), but it was Ryan Murray who sparkled the offense with his 57 points. This season Alex Stalock (88% SV) couldn't put up the numbers from the years before, in which he was excellent. In the middle of the season, McDonald (91,8% SV) won the starting Job and had some stellar performances.
This year William Nylander hit the 100 Pts, after 91p and 92p the seasons before, and won the scoring title. But he couldn't solve the 50goal mark again - 41g-49g- 46g Tomas Hertl was 3rd in scoring with 88pt.
We also had some disappointments: Auston Matthews again was ok, but not more. Wingels got off a slow start, but rescued himself with strong performances in the second half. Hartman was demoted to the 4th line - despite his very good 45 points last year. Rookie Konecny got his spot, cause he has more upside. But thats not Hartmans fault, so i blame myself for this one. My 3rd Line D-Combo Zadorov / Adam Larsson was average. Especially Zadorov don't develops the way i hoped. That's a problem i need to address next season.
The last two years, we lost the Presidents Trophy and the no.1 seed in the last week of the regular season. This year got to the playoffs on a 7 game winning streak an won the Trophy.
Playoffs:
W-Conference Final vs. Kings 4-0: We took gruel revenge for last years playoff-loss. Hey Kopitar/Toffoli....we kicked your Crownjewels.
W-Conference Semifinal vs. Ducks 4-0: A 3rd Year in a row we ousted the Ducks. Hey Getzlaf/Voracek/Perry...we plucked you.
Sharks PP over the first two series: 16/55 = 29,1%
W-Conference Final vs. Predators 4-0: This was harder than the result say. Hey Rinne.....stood on his head - now he got headache.
Stanley-Cup Final vs Rangers 4-2: What's after Rinne?? Lundqvist. He was the reason i lost my only two games (in ot) in this playoffs, and he held the games tight. Hey Lundqvist/Nash.....wait another year.(the little devil in me:

)
Thanks to the Goalies (Rinne / Lundqvist) our PP was lousy 2 for 36 over the last two series.
So we finished the playoffs 16-0-2....
