Signing Prospect - Under 20 years old - Waivers

I have a prospect I'd like to sign.
His current "contract" is due on June 30 at the end of the season I'm currently playing.
At that time he will only be 19.9 years old. I believe guys under 20 years old have to clear waivers to be able to send down. There is no way he'll clear waivers.
I'm afraid if I wait one more month 'til he's 20, I'll loose him.
I suppose if I wait to sign him in late June after the playoffs are done, roster size shouldn't be limited to 23 players, so I could just keep him on the roster as I would bring him up for training camp anyway.
I'm not sure if I'm making any sense here. Hopefully someone understands what I'm talking about and can give me a bit of advice.
Thanks.

No, that's not the waiver rule. You can sign him.
I found this in the Official Waiver Thread:
miked1991 wrote:Ok I just found this in the guide...
15.3 Exemption from the waivers and Waiver Draft
A number of players are exempt from the waivers and Waiver Draft:
* Skaters who sign their first NHL contract at the age of 18 are exempt for five years and 19 year old skaters are exempt for four years. Such exemption is reduced to three years once such players have played more than ten games in the NHL.
* Goalies who sign their first NHL contract at the age of 18 are exempt for six years and 19 year old goalies are exempt for five years. Such exemption is reduced to four years once such players have played more than ten games in the NHL.
* A player of at least 20 years old who plays his first NHL game has three years of exemption from the waivers and Waiver Draft.
-------
Is that all still correct for the 07 game as thats including waiver draft etc that was from the 05 game.
Now there's no Waiver Draft in EHM 2007, but the basic waiver rules are the same.
Are you sure you're not confusing the fact that you have to waive under 20 year old players that have CHL rights if you want to send them to the AHL?

That's probably it.
I know I tried this same thing at the beginning of the season with the same player and I had to put him thru waivers. At that time, I backed up and "replayed" those days without signing him.
I'm not at home right now, so I don't have the game open. I'm sure some team must have his CHL rights.
Either way, if I sign him in June, before he's 20, and some team does have his CHL rights, is there a 23 man roster limit at that time, or can I just leave him on my roster thru the summer, and send him down after training camp in August (when he's 20 and his CHL status doesn't matter)?
If I don't sign him, won't his "draft/rookie/prospect contract", or whatever it's called in hockey, expire and I'll lose him?

There is no roster limit in June.
If you are to loose his rights then you should have been notified of it in the news

Not sure if I received notification on him or not yet. Course I'm only in January. Maybe those haven't started being "sent out" yet. Received some for other players and staff, so I know it's working in my game.
I'm looking at the roster. Says his current "contract" is due to expire in June of my current season.

Where is he playing and where do you want him to play?

Junior players can be signed any time after you draft them but must be signed before the end of June on the 2nd year after you draft them(2 full years later) or the 2nd year after they become draft eligble. IRL it should be 2nd option but I have drafted a 19 year old in the game and still held his rights for 2 more years, not one. Anyway, I sign most of my draftees starting in January of their last year as I have been burned by waiting to long and not getting it done in time. Once they agree to a contract they don't officially sign till early July anyway unless they were in college and then they sign and go on your roster in early June. Either way the 23 man roster is not in effect after the first week in march so you don't have to worry about having to send someone down.

Right now he's with the Owen Sound Attack, not sure which Canadian Junior league that is.
He'll need probably one more year before the NHL. I'm afraid I'll loose his rights if I don't sign him.

I think this is what I was looking for. Thanks.

You usually get a warning either one month or one week before losing the rights to a player. You can also sign him now and send him right back to juniors if you wish. If you do wait until you get the warning about losing rights and are not ready to play him in the NHL, as mentioned you can keep him on your roster as the 23 man limit is no longer in effect. But if his team is still in the playoffs you might want to think about sending him back to his junior team, he would return in June.
