Okay gentlemen, as decided by you the Loyal TBL Faithfull our next Challenge will be run using the
Trade Update Config File v 1.1. Many thanks to Devils88 for his work putting that file together for us. All you do is copy the file into the your database folder before you begin your game.
Use of the config file is required; NOT optional!
We will be asking for people to post screenshots of their transacations listing screen and if we see that you didn't use the trade update you will have to restart your season.
Best of luck! We'll be announcing the next set of deadlines for bonus points soon; but this is your Official Announcementâ„¢ that Challenge 4.1 has begun with the post-trade Blues; and for Bruins fans the post-trade blues

Must we go back to these hopeless teams?

No team is hopeless with a good GM at the helm

Anyone can win with a good team... taking the Blows to the Cup? Even if it takes you until 4.3 to do it? (which it might...

) well now that's something that really shows you've got what it takes!

This should be interesting if nothing else.
I predict I'll be fired by mid November.

I brain farted on my first startup. I loaded up the new unfaking (using the NCAA one for the first time), but didn't think that loading a new DB would undo the changes that the trade config made. I basically wasted 15 minutes of waiting for the game to load up only to discover I'd have to do it all over again.
Got it right now though:

Here's my screenshot of the transaction screen to show that I've used the config file. Let me know if I need to repost it over in the stat recording thread.

I haven't moved beyong starting the game and taking the screenshot but I can see from the board expectations that this is going to be a tough challenge. They actually expect you to make the playoffs! Whenever I've played as another team, the Blues have finished in the bottom 5. The board has some seriously unrealistic expectations!

I have a job in a town 140 kilometres (~87 miles) away from my home town and now I have to be overnight there. And you better believe I'd love to be home starting the new challenge rather than sitting in a little attic room with this lap top without NHL EHM.
But because I can't play I decided to write here. It either eases my pain or makes me feel even worse...
I actually GM:ed Blues in advantage last weekend 'cause I had sooo much spare time (my wife doesn't agree with me) and I also noticed there will be many trades to do before you can call Blues a man... I mean a team. But what else could you expect when starting a season with a roster of a team which doesn't make the playoffs?
Almost every player is merchandise there. I still think I'm gonna give Tkachuk a try even with his way too big salary. He's the only star in team anyway. But who else? Cajanek? No. McAmmond? No-o. Goalies are so tough to get I may be stuck with Lalime unless there's gonna be some good goaltenders waived. In my opinion the best d-man in organization is #4 or #5 defender so I should find at least two better d-men somewhere.

To be continued...
My lap top is semi-automatic and decided to post my thread in the middle of my thinking.
I was getting back to the forwards and saying, that Young is maybe the kind of a veteran player I'm gonna keep. Jamal Mayers announced in my try-up that he needs some new challenge and ended up to the farm team (nobody wanted him even from the waivers... that's kind of a challenge for him). Boulerice looks like a disaster while Zigomanis (or whatever his name was) played well in an exhibition game.
My Montreal Challenge (which hasn't ended yet) went so badly that I'm gonna start this one with another approach - if I don't get the team play well, I'm gonna at least get fired!

I just started my challenge, but in "Players in" none of Zigomanis, Boulerice and the others is shown as trades, but they are in my roster.

Do you use a second GM to control your AHL affiliate? That could be the problem. You may have been in control of that GM when you checked.

No, at that moment I just managed St Louis.

Hmmm... I have no idea then. I can't see any other reason why they wouldn't show. Have you tried advancing the game a day to see if that resolves it?
Anyone else have any ideas?

I've tried that too, but it's still the same.

The trades technically happen earlier than you can begin a game; so they might not be listed on your transactions listing as they happened when the game wasn't documenting movements. Just a guess, I haven't actually fired up a game yet to see...
As long as you have the players you should then no need to worry

Did you start your game on August 4th?
'Cause in mine it has the players listed as coming in then so if you started after they might not show up.

This challenge wouldn't be half as bad if I knew even half the players on this team. I might put a Minstrel and just trade everyone for other nobodies.

Before i say anything I'd just like to point out that I am new to this game and because of that not very good so im mostly doing the challenge to learn. But anyways I just somehow pulled off a deal (that at least i think was good) for Malkin. So to get to the point, do you guys think I should leave him in Russia for a year and let him develop or bring him in immediatly (if I did he would probably center a line with Cole and Dumont).

I'd bring Malkin in if you still have time but you should make the offer asap as the deadline to bring in players internationally is fairly early compared to the start of the NHL season.
I think you'll find playing the Challenge and keeping up on the chat thread to see what other GMs have done really helps learn the game and it sure makes it more fun

Good Luck!

Well... I don't trade
everyone just people I can't see having any use in my lineup
*wonders if Tom has dealt all of his picks and prospects yet...*

Well, my Blues game is now underway and I'm pretty happy about the trades I've made.
Trades
Goalie prospect to Blackhawks for mid draft pick
Goalie prospect + late draft pick for Jay McKee
Defenseman prospect for Chris Drury
Dallas Drake for Michal Handzus + an early draft pick and a late one
Reed Low to the 'Nucks for late draft pick
Jason Bacashihua + forward prospect for Radoslav Suchy
3 forward prospects for Erik Cole
Jay McClement + Petr Cajanek + 2 pretty early picks for Steve Sullivan
Andy Roach + Dennis Wideman for Jason Smith
Forward prospect + goalie prospect + mid draft pick for Brian Rolston
Two forward prospects + early draft pick for Jaromir Jagr
Keith Tkachuk to the Pens for two draft picks
Jamal Mayers for Niklas Hagman
Bryce Salvador to Florida for a draft pick
The trades made for a pretty solid top-six forward group:
Cole - Drury - Jagr
Rolston - Handzus - Sullivan
I've put Sullivan and Rolston up on the top PP unit along with my first line, never tried to forwards at the blueline before.

I think I'm starting to turn my team around. I've added Jamie Langenbrunner, Matt Cooke, Michael Hanzus, Steve Begin, Mark Streit, Sami Kapanen (still injured), Ales Kotalik, and Andrew Ference all without giving up much. They were either acquired for a mid to late round pick, a naff player/prospect, or picked up from waivers.

Ok im beginning to think that the trade update is messing up some of the teams.
Examples:
Now that the Oilers have Samsonov on LW Smyth is very easy to get.
Since Pittsburg starts with Lemieux and Palffy they want veteran players and will get rid of Malkin pretty easily.
And finally on Washington they get Semin to go ahead of Ovechkin on the depth chart so when Ovechkin got injured I got him for a useless 1 star prospect, 4 minor leaguers and Handzus(not that im complaining about getting him of course)
Also ive seen several 2nd line players go on waivers (Kapanen, Nedved, Prospal just to name a few) but the wierd thing was Prospal stayed on the Lightning even though they put him on waivers (didnt go to AHL)
