With all the news of Malkin's "defection" there has also been news that another top propsect may do the opposite, as Zherdev, a Restricted Free Agent with Columbus has said that he might play in Russia instead if they don't rach a deal by next week:

That's too bad for the Jackets, they are one of my favorite teams.

Yeah, that's a shame. I hopes they will will make it to the play off sometime. And why didn't Tärnström (Tarnstrom

) returned to Sweden instead, that would make Elitserien more attractive and more people would come and watch the games.

Until reading the follow-up article I forgot that the BJ's basically went through a Malkin-type situation with Zherdev to get him out of Russia in the first place with all kinds of legal battles with CSKA-Moscow and such so it really makes this a wierd parallel to Malkin.
The GM said "Good grief. We spent $600,000 to get him out of Russia as a rookie to play here in the NHL and now there's a threat he'll stay in Russia?" He didn't however say he "Felt like he was taking crazy pills" but that's basically what he meant.

  [/Zoolander]
He said the contract has an 'out' until the NHL season starts, but that his deadline is coming up as he won't let it be a team distraction so they need to get the immigration matters etc. completed in time for him to be signed and in camp or forget it...

I can answer u this one: the allmighty SWISS FRANC!!!

Anyway, the Swiss League was always a good place for european players returning from the NHL. That keeps us among the Elite of European Leagues!!!

I know, sad but true. A couple of years ago the Swedish clubs could have signed former NHL players, but now they don't got the money to do it.
