EHM The Blue Line

Hello all, just signed up. Im pretty new to ice hockey and trying to understand the tactics of the game, but struggling with the terminology of the game. the point, a blue line prospect, the draw etc. Iv browsed the net for hints but not really found what basic things in the game mean, so could someone define the basics for me please.

Ok, thats helped a lot, so now could you point me in the direction of defining tactics in ehmea? Faceoff strategies? Zone set ups? 1-2-2 and collapse etc. iv no idea what any of these mean!

Something else that iv no understanding of, drafts and trades. Why cant you just buy a player? Im english and dont get this draft system one bit! Picks and trades. Struggling to get any decent new players into my squad. Whats the point in swapping like for like? Cos whos going to swap a top class player for a 45 year old donkey??

To make sure you just can't buy yourself a good team. Unlike what's happened in football.

For me that's the beauty of hockey and us sports in general. Every team gets a shot at good players.

Hahaha thanks mate, i get the theory behind it, good idea that keeps money down, its got crazy in football tbh. But whats the best way in getting a top class player into my team without having to let one go? And how does the draft pick system work? Im sorry for sounding clueless! But surely players cant just get picked by any club every season? Or is it just the under 19s that get picked via the drafting

To get a top class player, you can give up a top class prospect (a future top class player who is not making much of an impact right now). You might have to give a little something else too depending on the other team's need and actual standings. You can sign Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) every beginning of July. Those are the guys who's contract expired and decided not to re-sign with their previous team. You can trade your early rounds draft picks and/or average players.

You have a salary cap in Hockey so you cannot have that many top class player in your team because they have bigger contracts and you have to at least have 20 players in your rosters.

You have it right for the draft eligibility age, under 19 starting at 17.

The draft is a lottery to start with. All teams that didn't make the playoffs now have a chance to win the lottery. The team that finish last gets the most chance (20%) and down to 1% for the 14th team. who ever wins the draw gets the 1st overall pick. Other teams either loose one position or remain the same depending on the position where the team that won the lottery was.

Interesting, i kind of like that, i wonder how the 17-19 year olds feel about having to drag across the other side of the US though and leave the local team they played for and family? Do they get a say in the deal? Blows the youth policy out the window dosnt it? I like to see teams produce a kid from school and develop them into international players.
Those of you who watch MLS will know Steven Gerrard is on his way to LA i believe, he started at Liverpool, as a 10 year old junior, came right through to one of if not THE best liverpool player ever. Spent his whole career there.

Most of the kids already did that to get into the programs where they got noticed in the first place. They've probably bounced around since they were 12 or so.

This is how the professional sport of hockey is ! Unlike Soccer, there isn't any local hockey league that pays well in the US so it is the only goal for those kids. Europe as some nowadays (the reason why some European players stay in Europe) but otherwise you don't make a living out of hockey in America if you don't play in the NHL/AHL.

NHL rules are a bit too complicated, at least in my opinion. I would recommend you to try one of the European leagues first, their rules are similar to football leagues.

Im getting it, its not so much complicated, more simply strange. Im enjoying it, into january in season 1 as the capitals, second in my eastern conference and doing well, i follow it on uk tv so know a few players and the caps, im trying to get some quality players added in but so far iv only got grossman from philly who is doing well, i keep trying my luck!
