The Hasek regen: How low can he go?

I just did the 2010 NHL entry draft in my game as the Wild. That's the draft where you can usually pick a future franchise goalie if you have a high pick. It's also the draft where it's usually hard not to notice the Hasek regen -- there just aren't enough high-rated 5'10"-5'11" Czech goalies with acrobatic style and 19-20 in flair.

In my version of the hockey universe, the Hasek regen was ranked 13th in the final ISS rankings. That made him the 3rd-highest ranked goalie, behind guys who I assume are Roman Cechmanek v.2 (who has 4 in consistency and low determination -- sound like anyone you know?) and the next coming of Sean Burke (who looks like a quality goalie but one who's in it only for the money -- unambitious mercenary).

I had acquired the Avs' first rounder, which turned out to be the 20th overall. Of the goalies, the Cechmanek regen was picked 2nd, and Burke's regen 4th, neither of which was totally out of whack with their final ranking. Then the position player picking started; 5th, 6th, 7th... the Hasek regen was still there after the 16th overall pick, which was when I got thinking. I semi-accidentally clicked 'next pick' 17th, the Kings finally picked a goalie -- a Slovakian youngster ranked 15th. That was when I finally broke down and traded a 1st-rounder and a 6th-rounder to the Blackhawks for their 1st-rounder which was up next, and settled the future of my goaltending.

So, how far can he fall in the draft? I've never seen him fall out of the top 10 before, and if my memory serves, you usually have to get your hands on a top-5 pick to get him.

Heh. I got the Dom regen 12th in one of my games, cause I chickened out before you.

In another game I got him 8th. But I missed one thing..He got assigned a great big whopping FOUR for work rate. Two years later...not improved 1 darn bit.

During my Dallas Stars games:

In 2009, I drafted a wonderfully spectacular Czech goalie, 2nd overall.
I traded my first pick, plus Dale Hunt and another marginal pick to get this one. (the funnier in the story, is that TB never signed Hunt, so I bringed him back)

He burned the WHL and U-20 during 2 years, now he is starting goalie for one year in AHL (until Turco contract finish ;))

Mine has 7 for work rate, which may be a problem. He's got 16 in determination though, I hope that evens things out. Anyway, I also had the Red Wings' 2nd-rounder which turned out to be 31st overall. With that I got the determined, hard-working young Canadian power forward I probably would've gone for with the 20th pick if this young Czech acrobat hadn't been available, so I really didn't give up half the kingdom for Dom 2.0.

Oh yeah, and I also just got Nitty locked up for 4 years, so I'm in no hurry bringing this kid over. He just got signed by a Czech Elite League team and by the looks of it, he should be the starter there.

Hasek II went 17th overall in my Sabres save.

I'm approaching the 2010 draft and I'm not seeing any quality players in my Entry Draft search or Young Prospects search. How long do you normally have to wait to get some good regens? (BTW this is a new game with patch 3.0.4)

Odd. 2010 draft is usually a strong one. I'm nearing the 2011 draft, and that one looks to have quite a bit of talent too (although for some reason, almost everyone ranked in the top 10 is either lazy, severely lacking in determination, or an outright headcase). From what I can see of the 2012 draft, it has less depth but there's one guy I'd sell most of my farm system for. And he's even got a cool name: Emile Richard. Rocket's great-grandson?

I remember in my first few campaigns I started before the 3rd and 4th patches there were a ton of talented players coming up by this time, to the point I was trading whoever and whatever I could to get into the top 5 or 10. Hopefully the regens will get better in time but I don't see any regular NHL players coming from the next few drafts.

Another funny thing I noticed with the new patch, there are a ton of star players out there. It's better than having everyone suddenly decline and there be only 5 star players left, but now it's to the point there are superstars going unsigned because no team can afford them. I find it hard to believe no team would sign a 35-yr-old Rob Niedermeyer, still the best defenseman in the game. I probaby would have got him if I hadn't signed Evgeny Malkin as a RFA because the Penguins couldn't afford him (which may be the case in a few years). I wouldn't have a problem with bloated salaries if my prospects could take a few spots, but they would be at best marginal NHLers, same thing all over the league outside of Tavares and a few others. Also, my AHL club is now struggling because multi-million dollar players like Marc Savard, J.S. Giguere, and Andrei Markov are in the minors since no one could afford to claim them off of waivers. What a strange world I live in *sigh*.

I confuse those two all the time. What helps is if you keep saying to yourself "Scott - good, Rob - bum". :-D

Update: It looks like the players are getting better as the season progresses to the 2010 draft, there are 3 or 4 players I want. I'm hoping to get a 1st rounder or 2 now along with some seconds. Giving up a 2 firsts, a 2nd, and a 3rd for Malkin was still worth it!

2011 draft

I agree. Except Furman(regen of Bouchard), Y.Nikulin(Zherdev), T.Back(S.Hannan) and few others, it seems like 2011 draft is quite ordinary in terms of finding talent. After stockpiling talents last year (Vincour, Tavares and Roubik), I decided to trade away almost all my picks. I hope in couple of years we'll see another 2010 draft that was splashed with real talent. Just curious...any mathematical formulas to predict that splash in the future?!

Regens of Zherdev and Hannan in the 2011 draft? I'm in 2011 in my game and I have Hannan on my blue line -- he's only 33, and Zherdev is several years younger.

I'm guessing Crocker thinks the player comparision in the scouting report tells you who the player is a regen of. :dunno:

To back my guess up, I have a quote from another thread. :nerd:
CrockerNHL wrote:I took him as my 2th pick in 2009, only behind J.Tavares. He then spent a year in his hometown team in Czech Republic. Now I'm in July 2010 and my very experienced scouts are pointing on him as my best overall prospect (higher than Tavares, Doyle and Leffler). His attributes are amazing for a 19 years rookie: Determination and Get.Open=20, Speed, Stickhandling and Wristshot=18, Passing, Positioning and Agility=17, Deking, Teamwork, Slapshot, Acceleration=16. My scouts say he is a regen of Patrik Elias. So, I'm pretty sure he's a 1th liner. I hope it helped.

Yeah... I think you're on to something there Systemfel.

Regen = a regenerated player that is based upon the stats of a famous retired player.

The scouting report tells you he is "like" Patrik Elias with a batter slapshot or whatever, those are just comparisons to help you realize what type of player they might evolve into.

Believe it or not...I just let that go. I was nice. Two points for me!!!
That's it though..niceness is OVER!
I have no problem with other people thnking that because it says beisde Dan Cloutier's name that he is "a younger version of Turk Broda" or some such thing, that others think that Dan is a regen of a TURK.

Or then again, maybe I just did not read. :-D

Yup. And I think scouts only compare players to other active players, so if the report says a prospect is "like Adam Foote", you'll know he's not Foote's regen.

Does anyone know roughly when franchise players start appearing in drafts? There are some very good players through 2010 but they are still flawed and most likely will never reach star status.
