EHM The Blue Line

hi, still kinda new to all this but have a quick question.
how many shutouts should a decent team be looking for ? i know its a bit of a vague question but even when i dominate a game i still let a couple in . i dont mind winning 5-2 7-3 but im wondering if its a tactics thing, normal thing or maybe some kind of goalie bug.

Shutout has to deal with defensive talent, goalie's talent (+ focus + concentration + work ethic), and a bit of luck

However, i prefer to win 60 games with no shutouts than loosing 60 and having a few shutouts

i use the nj devils most of the time so they should be pretty good. so your saying i shouldnt be too worried about 1 or 2 shutouts a season ?

Well, usually Brodeur is a specialist at shutouts...

But a shutout doesn't give you anything special...no extra-point or anything like this. The most important is to win the game Hem...nah...the most important is to win the Cup!

I don't know the slapshot tactic, but it sounds like an offensive one, while the Devils are mainly a defensive team...that should explain why you don't have that much shutouts. Offensive teams generally have very few shutouts, while defensive ones have more.

Brodeur is one of the best goalies to make shutouts (he made 12 this season if i remember correctly). With the Devils usual neutral zone trap ultra-defensive system, you should have some more But don't expect to score too much

ive used neutral zone trap before and got slaughtered

The trap is basically defensive-minded ultra-conservative system It works well in any situation, even with an offensive-minded team, but then it gives less shutouts.

Then, all depend on how you want to win the Cup: scoring 350+ goals or allowing less than 200... I'm still unable to make both numbers the same time But still working on it!

The Slpashot tactic is very offensive, and will limit the number of shutouts you get

ive finally worked it out, i suck . im top of the british league but i let my coach sort out lines and tactics. im not sure this is the best way to play but its better than looking confused at whats going on. my shutout record this season is a mighty 1 against romford in a preseason game.

Don't be to harsh with yourself dude
Don't espect great success if you're aren't setting tactics and lines by yourself btw.

Try to set up a checking line or two and match them versus the opponents top scorers.

i did have a season where i did it myself and won the british playoffs, but for some reason it never seems right if you get me. i play football manager a lot and you get a lot more control of your team during games, i think that might be why i dont feel like im making much difference

Soccer is a different thing than hockey And FM has a far bigger devellopement than EHM had That certainly explains the difference.

However, to get back on topic, you'll have better results if you set tactics and lineups by yourself. And your difficulty to record shutouts may come from the league you're playing in. Goalies aren't that great in the British league, and so are more prone to allow a weak goal somewhere in the game that breaks the shutout. You should have more shutout-success by playing in the NHL with a top-goalie and a strong defense under a defensive tactic system. For example, you were talking of the New Jersey Devils... With Brodeur in the net, they are a really good team to make shutouts

Yup, the Devils have a big cap issue at the start of the game. But teams like Vancouver or Dallas should give you a lot of shutouts with respectively Luongo and Turco A bit less with Kipper and the Flames, but still some...

Bah...don't bother yourself with shutouts! Bring in 4 playmaking centers, 8 goal-scoring wingers, 6 offensive defenseman, don't mind about the goalies, and score a minimum of 7 goals every night! Show must go on!

To be completely honest, I never worry about shutouts. If the keeper's stopping the puck enough for my team to win, he's all-good in my books.

The only time I look at shutouts is usually in an extreme tie-break situation when comparing two or more goalies.

Yeah, I'm with B. Stinson on this one. I look at shutouts as a bonus. They usually come when I'm least expecting them. Sometimes I might be struggling for a while and then all of a sudden I get a shutout against a really tough team. Then again, I play a very offensive style of game.

Mostly the same for me However, if there's a potential shutout after 2 periods and if i have a comfortable lead, i try to play a more conservative style to help my goalie getting the shutout. It's good for his morale. And so it's good for my futur games

But once he allowed a goal, i generally go back to the offensive business...at least when i have offensive teams, as i also like to play with very conservative teams or teams with a balance approach

i dont think ive ever loved and hated a game at the same time like i do with this
ive decided to just try to win and nothing more. if they score 5 my team with score 6, i hope.

However, why do you love and hate this game the same time? I easily understand the 'love' part But not really the 'hate' one Is it this particular game you're playing or EHM in general?

ehm in general. my knowledge of hocky is id say just above basic.i can watch games and know whats going on. but on ehm the tactics are a bit much and the money side is more complicated than it needs to be ( dont start me on the 100 different types of free agent ) ive read the guides on here 100 times and most of it has stuck but there are always little things that bug me enough to post, like shutouts.
it is a great game and im sad to see si have given up on it, i think it was only a version away from being really top quality. the other odd thing and this might say more about me is that im not one of those people that keep posting saying the game is bad because they cant win, in my two full seasons i won the british playoffs and got knocked out in the semi final.i win and still moan

Salary cap, free-agents, waivers eligibility, junior eligibility... all those things are a bit complicated sometimes But that's what makes the charm and the difficulty of the GM job in the NHL

However, as you know, you can ask every single question you would have in mind in the forums and have tons of users to help you, like on this one for the shutouts

(no need to answer, as we're already a bit off-topic i just wanted to know what you disliked in the game to try to correct those things and help you having a more enjoyable EHM experience )

i dont think the topic matters now haha . there are a few other things i wouldnt mind cleared up. like a better understanding of tactics and that kind of thing. but i guess part of the fun is making it up as you go along. the cups are sweeter when you earn them

ahhh ok. i meant that the whole shutout thing was solved in the first few posts.ok one last post in this topic, kinda on topic too.
will the guys that made the big guides update or add to whats already there ? ( expand on tactics , how to get shutouts )
