EHM The Blue Line

Hey, in my Coyotes team my third "shutdown" line consists of:

Pandolfo - Scatchard - Ortmeyer

All 3 see PK duties.

Scatchard's AVG after 25 games is around 8.50 but Pandolfo and Ortmeyer are down around 6.40.

They all see the same minutes and have similar attributes so how come 2 suck? lol

Any ideas?

A lot of variables factor into the game rating. Scoring, +/-, penalties & fights. Depending on what for and when, a minor penalty can actually increase a player's game rating. My shut-down line typically has Dingman-Sutherby-Ortmeyer. Sutherby & Ortmeyer rarely have a game above 7 (mostly 6's & 5's) but Dinger consistantly rates in the 7-8 range. Why? I think it has to do with his intimidation & physical presence as well as sparking the team with a fight when I tell him to. You'd have to crack the code and algorythms to know for certain, but what would be the fun in that?

I don't see why you take care of their average rating... Do they do their job well on the ice? Do the opposing top lines score goals against them? If they do their job and prevent the opposing top players from scoring goals, then don't care about their ratings! If they don't do the job on the ice, then the ratings should partly inform you on who's the real cause of the undone job.

Btw, i had Pandolfo during 3 seasons... The first two, he had brutal ratings (6.30-6.40) but was doing an okay job, although way under what his attributes suggest. The final season i had him, he had a 6.80 AvR, but was absolutely useless on the ice, always involved in stupid goals allowed. So the ratings don't say it all, neither do the attributes or the stats. The only truth is on the ice.

Sadly the rating system is more biased towards offensive efforts than defensive success, but this doesn't necessearily mean they're not getting the job done.

How often have you seen someone make rating 8 in a game without getting a goal or assist? Propably not very often, although it does happen from time to time.

I see it quite often when Dingman lays 10 hits, blocks 5 shots and wins a fight...

Other than that, i agree that the AvR isn't really accurate. Offense is way favorited, but still less than the goalies!

Boah, with time, you get used to it and know that 6.50 isn't that bad for a purely defensive depth player... But it's a bit of a mess at first sight...

But as i said, the ratings don't matter that much, as the only truth is on ice

I have the (good) problem of that it is fairly bias toward offense, yet Richard Matvichuk is getting like 8 and 9 ratings in most game with no goals, no assists, and at time a +/- as low as -3. how is possible? just trying to figure it out lol.

I'm with you shadd, I see Dinger get 8 ratings pretty regularly without any offensive input.

Something I run into with pure defensive forwards is if their AvR gets too low, it chums the water for the media. You start getting news items about how a former GM of your team would have ditched player X a long time ago. Hmm... maybe that's why he's a FORMER GM!

When I get these, I always stick to the player's defense unless he isn't doing the job, of course. Either way, it is hell on their morale. In blowouts, give them some PP time or set your line useage to "Even". This helps boost the morale of a player.
