Disciplining Player

I've done a search but can't find anything on this subject.
I just had an assistant coach tell me that Patrick Sharp showed up late for practice and not in game shape (he's at 59%). He's a RFA after this season, his morale is "very good" and his past 5 games are 7-10-6-7-9. Should I go ahead and discipline him or just let it ride?
I had a goalie pull the same thing in training camp and I disciplined him and he was still upset about it after I sent him back to junior. Any thoughts?

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.

He was only late, and it was probably because he's fatigued. Everyone has a few of those days at some point(I know I have them at least five times a week, every week ;) ).

Players seem to get upset pretty easily, unless they really deserve a sanction. It should be used parsimoniously.

The game is weird that way. I have had reports that players have missed games. Yet...when you look they played 20 minutes. So not sure about that. I disregard those reports completely because of it.

But I dunno, maybe I should not be..

I agree with what the others had to say on this. To be honest, I haven't had anything good come out of disciplining a player in any circumstance. This is one feature where I think they had the right idea but it wasn't executes so well.

Well, I went ahead and disciplined him. Didn't want him setting a bad example, you know? So it ended he took the discipline without comment. Just a warning, didn't dock him any pay. He's still not in game shape and his morale hasn't changed. I wonder if it will affect his re-signing with me this summer? Live and learn I guess.

I always give a warning for unprofessional behaviour when a player shows up late and not in game shape. They generally accept it without comment and you don't hear about any other late show up from them or anyone else for a long time.

I also tend to give poor performance warnings here and there, when the rating is 5 and under, and the game stats of the player are really that bad. They usually accept the warning without comment. A few times, they are angry... A few other times, they apologize for their poor perf and re-motivate themselves for future games... Performances of 4 and under give them an automatical 1 week fine, as there's no excuse for being so pathetic on the ice.

I also hand out official warnings for poor performance, specially for goaltenders when they're horrible and play themselves out of the game.

I have Price as my starter for several (10+) seasons, and it seems every season he has one three-to-four games slump. I warn him after a horrible game, he always accepts it and says he will strive to improve and help the team, and it works, he plays much better consistently for the rest of the season.

But it really depends on some hidden attributes, though. My Hasek regen, I warned him once he was unhappy with me for three months and played like wet toilet paper during this time, then requested a trade I had to make. So, be careful!

It's always a warn, though, never a fine. I do the same for "showing up late for pratice" report, and even the "poor showing on pratice" (followed by poor conditioning) reports. Never had a problem with it I remenber.

This Phoenix team has someone with a 5 rating virtually every game. Mike York is one of the biggest offenders for being a lazy arse. True to life, just like last season in Philadelphia. Dude is widdling me off even though he darn near leads the team in scoring.

All it will take is a 4 and he gets fined.

He goes like this

10-6-7-6-5-6-8-7-6-5-10-6-6-7-7-5.

Consistently naff I guess.

Kapanen responded to his one warning by going on a 5 game point streak. Course, Vrbata was out and he got moved to 2nd line. May stay there too.

Well... in fact, i toned things down with EHM07... :p In EHM05, it was a warning for a 6, a 1 week fine for a 5, a 2 weeks fine for a 4, and a trip to AHL or trade market at 3 and under. Some guys were upset and fastly dealt. The others understood the message and get their game going. But it doesn't work the same way in EHM07, so i can't be as harsh as i'd like to be...

I've not used it very often but playing in the British leagues I 've found that if I try it on the British players they'll accept it but the imports get into a sulk about it. Not that it bothers me if they do, there's such a large pool of players out there that can play at my level that I can get a replacement in with little fuss anyways.

Really? He's been pretty solid for me. In the last 15 games he's gone...

10-7-8-8-10-6-7-7-10-8-10-7-6-8-10

He's had a 2 disappointing games (the 6's) but other than that, he's been good. I wonder if it has to do with the style of hockey your playing? It might not suit him.

I've been considering giving a warning to Niko Kapanen but his morale is already Very Low. I don't know if a warning for poor play will help at this point. The guy can't even maintain an average rating of 6 though!

Do you all feel that by giving them warnings or letting them know that you don't appreciate their play in recent games that it can change how they play in EHM?

I noticed that someone pointed out that they told Kapanen he wasn't doing so well and then went on the 5 point streak.

But that in my opinion can happen in any EHM game or season. Just wondering if doing this can really change their mental state.

Yep. I have seen it happen. Especially if they say "accept warning and will try harder next time"

I always seem to get a UNH: "thinks he's been treated unfair" and sometimes even: "unhappy at treatment of teammate", so I usually don't discipline until I'm really widdled off at them.

I'm thinking the way a player takes it has to do with their mental attributes, perhaps?

It certainly does. Hasek's regens hate beeing called out, but several class acts players have never given me problems with it.

Don't play well -> warning

Whine when warned -> Selfish -> Will never make any sacrifice for the team -> Useless when needed ==> Useless!!! ==> The door is wide open, good bye!

Simple as that :D

True. But one player sulking may often influence the others too.

Might aswell skip the whole warning thing and show the door straight out.

Needs warning --> Bad player --> Out the door.

:-D

Boah, sometimes good players need a warning too... Well, generally, they don't actually need it, as they are professional enough to react all by themselves in the next game after a pathetic performance.
Tasku wrote:But one player sulking may often influence the others too.
Once he is gone, he can no longer influence his (former) teammates ;)

Oh, and if you're sure you'll fire him and think the other guys won't mind, don't hesitate to fine him as much as possible! It saves some money which would be usefull for let's say the astronomic signature bonuses of some big staff :D This way, naff players become (partially) usefull :D

I've been doing

5 - official warning for poor performance
4 or lower - 1 week fine for poor performance
Game Misconduct - 1 week fine for game misconduct

Generally, this does not make the players UNH.

Only had problem with this once and the story goes like this:

getting a 5 > get warned > player accepted without comment > get another 5 the next game > warned again > players go UNH...

He did not play another game on my team after that....

It seems we have the same mentality about disciplining our guys :D Although, when players get a 5, i always check their in-game stats before giving a warning. Sometimes their game doesn't look that bad, and they escape the warning. However, i always have two or three players going unhappy with this treatment every year... Generally, they are the first gone  If they can't admit they played bad, they'll never really play well, so they are useless to me.

What bugs me is when a player is on a streak of 5's... A warning is clearly not enough, a fine will always push him to whine. So what? A warning/fine for unprofessional behaviour? :dunno: Usually, i would just say: waivers + buyout, but sometimes it's not really an option...
