Drafting Outside the 1st Round

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forum and finally thinking about buying the game. I played '05 and one of my biggest concerns with the game was that drafting a player in rounds 2-7 was useless. I played careers lasting 20seasons and didn't once get a star player outside of the 1st round. Most of the quality players were the top picks of draft also, the top player being virtually guaranteed to score 100 pts his rookie season, with not busts or diamonds in the rough.
So my question has this been fixed and is it possible that my next 30 goal scorer can be found in the 4th round?
thanks a lot for any help you guys can offer

How manny players can you name today in the NHL to score more then 100 points in a year that where drafted out the 2nd or 3rd round?
To score 100 points you have to be very very skilled these days and scouts do get better on the jobs these days..

You can find guys outside of the 1st round but generally they won't be your first liners. I've found a bunch of role guys down there

It is possible to find, maybe not superstars, but great players, even in the 3rd or 4th rounds. Expecially when the regens start to fill the draft.

To be honest real good players in the later rounds are very rare. But sometimes it happens that youngstars just fly under the radar. I had a season with the Dallas Stars, it's a long time ago now. And some other NHL team drafted a guy in the 5th round who was not ranked in the ISS rankings. He played highschool or college then and i remember seeing his attributes i thought first it could be a good player. But my scouts missed him so i was not aware of him until the draft day. I just offered that team a 1st rounder but they said forget it.
It was Mike Modano's regen. And he became one of the top players of the league quickly.

So yes there is hope for you if you are a scouting genious!!

I've noticed that in later rounds, drafting overagers could be the way forward as they have developed more of course than the players taken in the first round. I got David Perron in the 4th Round (100th Overall) in the 2008 Entry Draft and in the first 7 games of his NHL career i had him 3rd line LW and 2 line PP, he tallied 4 assists in his time, and he's now developing nicely in the AHL, with the possibility to be a 2nd, 3rd liner next year perhaps.

Send all scouts-guys at NHL-entry scouting. Just a month at a time, make them do different things. Forget about stars for some, include stars for some. Some search for positions and some overall. Mark them in your shortlist, at draft day. Look at the scouts-lists and available prospects, take the best one, or one you think will be best in one position of the available prospects in later rounds.

Absolutely. My best one:
Vladimir Riha (4th round, 2014, #105) - 9 30g seasons, 3 40g seasons over 17 seasons. I never signed him... traded his rights a year after I drafted him, so all his scoring was done for AI teams. 488g in 1250 games so far.
I've had a bunch of 4th round+ defensemen turn into legitimate 1st and 2nd pairing guys. A ton of 3rd rounders of mine have become 30-40 goal scorers.

Wow, good stuff. What is your secret for getting production out of such late picks, or even for picking them in the first place?

drafted a player from Austria as #60 overall (ie 2nd round but the very last) and he turned into a real superduper star who developed nicely in AHL and later became one of the best players in the NHL with multiple 100+ points seasons.
but of course he would leave my team when it started to go bad

One of my best players was taken in the 7th round.
He's never scored 100p (2 season at 99p each though)
And 11 of the 12 seasons he has played he has scored 30+ goals
Ironically my scouts still say he sucks and that he is not good enough for my current lineup....But my coaches say he is a key member of the team.... all the contradictions
His Stats

I think that you will be very happy with EHM 2007. I have had many first round busts (a lot of first overall picks turned into mediocre players). Additionally, you can find a lot of late round picks to be good. In my last franchise I had the last pick of the draft. I ended up trading his rights, but he became a first line talent player with the Panthers.

In 2012-season I traded the first overall pick to me. Got this guy, he plays on my second line:

Wroom, this thread is for drafting
outside the first round.

Looks like a real good player though.
Quick off-topicer: Who's he the regen of?

Oh yeah, sorry:D
Don't know who he was a regen of. Anyway to see that?
Have a 7th rounder - 210th overall.
In his third season I used him in the second line. He got 72 points.

Just look for players with
Determined, Ambitious, and Strong Character, in the mental characteristics part of the scout report, and decent rating from scouts in a certain skill (IE shot/scoring and puckhandling for snipers)
then look at their average rating.
Even if the scout say they have no chance at making to roster, it doesn't mean its true.
the above doesn't guarantee they will work out, but its a good start because, you no a few things.
The Player has a quality shot, can handle the puck decent enough, and will work hard to get better.

It's pretty much a crapshoot like the real draft. Ive found many players that should've been in the first round.
I tend to use my 6th and 7th picks to draft strong mental players. Huge junior point getters but with limited potential. Help the farm clubs

I drafted Anton Berglund (Forsberg regen) in the second round. 197 potential and awesome stats

I prefer draft some solid mental players in the late rounds. Usually they will be good AHL/european league players, but some times you hit the jackpot. I drafted HUGE slovakian D-man (not Chara regen, lol) in 5th round, and now he is good 3 pair d-man, and good PK player

.
Also remember put multiple scouts to spy those young stars...

So for scouting, how many of my scouts should be set for draft? I send 1 to Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, and 1 for Young Prospects. I also have a couple going to other regions and have my 2 best scouts for the NHL entry draft. Is that good enough or should I just focus all my scouts on the entry draft?

I send my scouts to the main European leagues and a couple to Regions "not so well off" in hockey teams (like Britain and southern Europe), looking for 15-24 year olds and i send 3 scouts to each Canadian junior league once a year. The remaining scouts that i have (normally left with about 3) i send off to the draft intensively, 2 of them searching for just under 20's. That way i cover most of the countries and most of the prospects for the draft. Sometimes you can snag a decent player in the later rounds. There aren't many though (look outside the draft rankings too, that's where they normally come from).
Rant over.

You ever had a player from Britain?

ive found some decent players in the later rounds..no superstars, but many nhl regulars. i usually like to stockpile on draft picks tho by signing free agents and trading em. its also fun taking chances on players from nontraditional markets too. i had a guy from australia playing on my farm team, he wasnt bad.

Apart from me

, No. I look for the Tony Hand regen who wouldn't be bad as an NHLer. But no look as of yet... I don't know why i send them to britain, just on that odd occasion there may be someone there.
