EHM The Blue Line

Hey I'm on my 4th season with Kings and Ive been having some goalie problems lately. I got Hannu Toivonen as starting gk and he's been playing very weak this season with .890% in SV%. So now i wonder if there is something i can do to improve his performance like some personal tactic changes or is it just bad luck?

I tend to look more at the rating than save percentage, in which case HT has had only one bad game in his last five games.

Could be a defensive problem?

my defense i pretty good i got 28.36 in shots against avg and 3rd best in the league

I have a a similar problem but with backup goalies. As the Ducks i start of with Giguere and Bryz, Giguere has been a steady starter for my first three years, but my back-ups never cut it.

Bryzgalov: 21 GP, 11 W, 3.13 GAA, 0.901 SV% (Looking back at Bryz, i should have kept him)
Osgood: 16 GP, 6 W, 3.53 GAA, 0.889 SV%
Raycroft: 5 GP, 1 W, 3.92 GAA, 0.877 SV%
Varlamov: 5 GP, 2 W, 3.54 GAA, 0.875 SV%
Rask (My Current Backup): 23 GP, 15 W, 3.07 GAA, 0.897 SV%

I'm probably just being impatient with them, but none of them stats are really too good... Any ideas on coaching Backup Goalies?

Whenever i have to put my backup goalie in I give my skaters extra fast skates so that they can play offensive and keep the puck far away from my goalie!!

Looks like a defensive problem to me. Look at the pairings of your d-men and your tactics.

When giving them playing time. Give them several games at a time. Like 5-10 games. Atleast that works for me. Depends a little of how good a goalie is too. Varlamov gets really good on my game.

When i play my back-ups i do try to give them a few games at a time, but they don't perform well for the 1st 3 games, so i switch back to Giggy. Guess i just need to make more sacrifices and be more patient

There is a theory that says to play your backup against the tougher of the two teams on a back to back. Reasoning being you get the two points that you are supposed to get against a weaker team and hope for the best against the stronger team. I have used it to some effect in EHM if I have been in a tight playoff race, but goalies have rarely been a problem for me.

I guess Toivonen was in a bad streak during the regular season. In the end he started playing very good and in the playoff he was playing at his best and took me all the way to the Stanley Cup finals, sadly i lost to the Canadiens 2-4 but Toivonen finished the playoff with 0.926% in SV%.

Maybe part of the problem is that you have starting goalies in a backup role.

yeah me too, but I think that's just from lidas 1.3 roster update because I don't even remember him from before...

I know this probably isnt the best place to put this and I apologize if there is any inconvinience but I didnt know anywhere else to put this and I searched but didnt find much...here goes..

Is there an attribute that tells you how many games a goalie can play before he needs a break? Example, guys like Brodeur and Luongo and play up to and including 70 games a season....is there a way to tell that in EHM?

Stamina?

You just have to keep an eye on their performance, I guess.

maybe you should trade for a great young goalie that has a great potencial

First thing, check how many shots per game your team is giving up in the Team Standings. If you're are allowing 27 or less, then your goalies are giving up some goals on their own. If it's over 30, adjust your tactics to slow down the other team. Fewer penalties = less PP time = fewer shots. Also change some of your offensive mindsets to normal. This worked well for me. I've had 2 straight games where the other team only got 20 shots. My team gives up around 27 shots a game which is 4th fewest in the league.

Also, look at where the other team is scoring from. Are they walking right in and getting good shots? Are they scoring on the PP (if so, then tweak your PK)? On the PK, I usually have the guys stay back and let the other team play on the perimeter. Its like playing zone in basketball and letting the other team have the outside shots, but nothing inside.

i have the exact same problem with my bruins save. (although it doesnt get better) tim thomas is a stellar goalie with stats on par with kipper, but in the first two seasons after i took over (2010->?) his avg saves at 0.888 and 0.887, im thinking of using Rask, but the games i've tried him he avg's about 0.850ish. my defence is stellar with phanuf, scott niedermayer, van ryn, and norris runner up mara. i let very few shots on goal, and got mostly just 1 productive line (top line) the other are good at defence first, and decent offence. my team is tipped as the favorite for stanly last two years, but finnished at 9th and 7th, after being dead last at x-mas. its really frustrating. any ideas what it could be? the annoying thing is that he seems to have ok avg rating, but let everything in.
could it be that he plays so bad because of his age? i think his about 38 years old or something.

(im looking so forward to varmalov!(ahl mvp, half his games where shutouts, had a "decent" 0.965ish save% and 1.1 gaa, but still abit too young imo.)
