I've recently started playing as a CHL team, and haven't been able to find on any website the details of the NHL release clause. I had a couple of important players on my team who were signed by the NHL team that held their rights in the middle of the OHL championship final (I noticed that this also happened to the opposing team) and then immediately left my team. I was wondering if they were only able to do this because those players had an NHL release clause or if they could do this to any CHL player they held the rights to?

Also does this in anyway affect their ability to send the player to the AHL? So will the NHL teams be able to send these players to the AHL next season, despite them being under 20, or will they still have to send them back to the CHL.

Also if anyone knows of a website that has a description of the NHL release clause it would be much appreciated!

That has happened to me many times. Its because they have the NHL release-clause. When signing players you have the option not to give it to them, but they will most likely not sign with you without the NHL release-clause. NHL teams will usually send the prospects to the AHL, its only happened once that an NHL team sent back a player to me.

A player under 20 can not be assigned to the AHL unless they are without CHL-rights. I have started to believe that we in the editor should give players the rights to the CHL-team they are on. Earlier I thought they'd get that automatically in the game, but that might not be the case. I'll investigate this some more to see if we have to change things in the database

I'm not sure the NHL release clause has anything to do with it. NHL teams need to sign players to avoid losing their rights and the player automatically joins the NHL roster when he's signed. CPU controlled teams will rarely return a player to his junior team at this point, because the 23-man roster restriction in the NHL is lifted by the time these signings become a necessity.
