It's just give you a reputation. When you're Hall of Famer everyone think you must be good and this will help you gain more fan and board to love you. If you stay ''unknow'', nobody will know you, you need to start with nothing and build your reputation.

Like philou said, it's your reputation. If you're an unknown, you won't be asked to GM the national team. If you're unemployed, the NHL won't come knocking on your door. You're more likely to have better luck getting hired in one of the lower (much lower) leagues.
