EHM The Blue Line

August 31st, 2011

I am the new GM of the Colorado Avalanche, my goal for the 2011-2012 season is to evaluate the skill and talent of the organization and make changes as I see fit. I hope to let the players mature and play out a successful campaign and with some luck we can claim a playoff spot and mabey even hoist the holy grail itself the Stanley cup.

I have a very busy schedule ahead of me these next few weeks as I will evaluate the staff and bring in some scouts and personal if needed. I will assign scouts to certain parts of the country and overseas to get a head start on the 2012 entry draft. I will also look at the possibility of signing some prospects if needed as well.

Going thru my list of personal, which include my head coach, assistants and scouts, I certainly need to make some changes before I begin this season. I’m not totally convinced Joe Sacco has the tools and experience to coach this younger team so I’ve offered a coaching job to Bob Hartley. In the event he refuses I’ll remain with Sacco, but I’m almost positive he will accept a head coaching role here in Denver so I have notified Sacco about his impending departure if this occurs. I’ve also explained to him that I would like to keep him within the organization as an Assistant if he would like, I will leave it up to time and see how it plays out.

I should also note that I’ve offered various assistant coaches positions within the club and will terminate a few of my current coaching staff when I receive my accepting fax’s from the coaches who choose to hop aboard. I feel some of the current staff are not experienced enough to be in the position of this role and hope to eliminate any doubt before we start training camp.

Bad news to report, my top prospect Gabriel Landeskog has suffered an injury that will virtually eliminate him from the entire camp itself for 3 weeks. I’m hopeful he will recover before then but I’ll remain optimistic this gives another player a chance to shine and possibly make the club.

There are three forward positions open and the only players who are guaranteed a spot for the upcoming season are:

Joe Sacco resigns his position as Head Coach and accepts a role as new Assistant coach within the club.
Bob Hartley is expected to sign a contract, making him the new Head Coach of the Colorado Avalanche within a few days.

Various scouts have been let go and new ones hired to replace them. I am very hopeful this will be a successful group on finding the talent for the upcoming entry draft next year.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the new head coach of the Colorado Avalanche, Mr. Bob Hartley. He is well aware of our expectations this year and with his vast experience and mentoring of younger players, I know for certain we couldn’t have asked for a better person leading this club.

Joe Sacco has graciously decided to step down earlier this week and accept an assistant coaching role to let Bob Hartley take his position to lead this club. We are excited to have been able to keep him aboard and retain his presence within this organization. Mr. Sacco has showed true dedication in what it means to win and we can assure you this club has nothing but gratitude and its deepest respect for him.

With that being said we are only a few days away from the first set of preseason games and the coaching staff have been hard at work and working endless hours of overtime to prepare the players for the upcoming evaluation throughout the exhibition.

The Colorado Avalanche would also like to name the captain for this season and he is no other than Mr. Paul Stastny. His two assistants will be Cody McLeod and Steve Downie.

With the Red and Blue teams set to go for camp, I’m looking at some weak spots in the roster. My defensive depth is lacking and I will be on the lookout to bolster my blue-line via waivers. At this point I’ll wait until teams have trekked thru the exhibition games and see what scraps I can look at that might be worth taking. I ‘m refraining from moving any players or picks at this time in an attempt to give my players every opportunity to make the club or work on they’re skills down in Lake Erie.

Besides the fact I don’t even have a first rounder for this year’s entry draft I may look at the possibility of moving 35 year old Milan Hejduk out for a first rounder to a team in contention, and give him every opportunity to compete for a Stanley cup at this point of his career if we are out of playoff contention, but we’ll worry about that if we cross that point in the season. His contract may become an issue and I may have to overpay to acquire a pick which I’m not open to doing.

Other parts of my roster include some goaltender depth and some more scoring up front. Jean-Sebastian Giguere will be an excellent mentor to Semyon Varlamov for a few seasons and we all have high hopes he will eventually become a solid goaltender for us for years to come.

Ryan O’Reilly and David Jones are two players who I really need to step up to solidify a good third line of scoring depth or replace anyone injured (knock on wood) during the season. I am somewhat happy with my teams overall toughness as I’ll be leaning on my newest assistant captain Cody McLeod to help keep things in order, he will have help from guys like Steve Downie, Shane O’Brien, Ryan O’Byrne and Ryan Wilson backing him up if needed. They are not scared of the physical affairs, I would like to carry an enforcer during the year to levy off the workload from Cody for the very physical affairs but I believe Patrick Bordeleau may need another year in Lake Erie to hone his hockey skills more.

Another injury to report, Chuck Kobasew is out for 2 weeks with a rotator cuff injury, but there is some good news today as Gabriel Landeskog is about a week or so from returning from injury, I am looking forward to seeing him in the lineup and making it out of camp this year.

Injury in practice today has sidelined goaltender Jean-Sebastian Giguere for 2 weeks with an elbow injury. I’ve called up #31 Trevor Cann from the AHL Lake Erie Monsters to take his place.

R. O’Reilly played an excellent game today, not only did he receive the first star nomination in the game but also chalked up 3 pts in this game as well. Jan Hejda scored once and played a great defensive game earning the 3rd Star also.

Buffalo Sabres are in town tonight and I’m aiming to make a few roster changes for tonight matchup. I’m going to start Trevor Cann this evening and give him his first taste of NHL competition ever. I’m also taking out prospect Joey Hishon and inserting Matt Duchene.

A great win for us tonight, and an even greater win for our young goalie Trevor Cann picking up his first NHL victory even if it is preseason hockey. Now with only a few games remaining, I’m going to make a few cuts for tomorrow, and I’m going to announce to the dressing room that a forward has made the roster and cut the only spots remaining down to two.

Joey Hishon sent back to his junior affiliate OHL London Knights. My evaluation is that he needs to work more on his skills and would be happy to see him tryout again and possibly make the club next year.

Danny Richmond sent down to the AHL Lake Erie Monsters. He is nothing more than a depth defenseman and lacks the current skill to claim a spot on the Avalanche blue-line.

Forward Ryan O’Reilly has been approached by team personal, and let it be known he has made the team this upcoming year.

I’ve decided to make a few changes for next game against the Bluejackets. I’ve scratched McLeod in favour of Landeskog and also scratched Olver and replaced him with Enforcer Sebastian Bordeleau. I don’t expect a very physical affair but I have been told that the Columbus organization likes to make last minute changes in the toughness department and I don’t wanna be caught having guys that are trying to make the club fighting instead of scoring. I’m looking for Gabriel to just play a sound game as he is just coming off of injury.

What a spectacular game tonight, Trevor Cann with a shut-out victory and as expected the Bluejackets countered with adding Derek Dorsett last minute and with Sebastian Bordeleau in the lineup he dispatched him and made it known he would not poke and pry at our players even with the score being so lopsided. Gabriel added a goal even while coming off injury, Jones, O’Reilly and Hejduk all had a phenominal night. I’ll announce the starting rosters for this upcoming season tomorrow afternoon.



Sept 22nd, 2011

Tyson Barrie has been sent back to his junior affiliate WHL Kelowna Rockets to carry on with his junior career and work on his skills as like Joey Hishon, he will not be rushed.

Mark Olver and Ryan Stoa have both been sent back to the AHL Lake Erie Monsters to work on they’re game. Both had a good camp, but not a great one as they really need to get faster on the skates to keep up with the game more.

Enforcer Patrick Bordeleau has also been sent to Lake Erie in hopes he will work on his skating and overall checking.

Goaltender Trevor Cann had a spectacular training camp going 2 and 0 with one shutout covering for injuried J.S Giguere, and I have high hopes he will continue to work on his game and get even better and be ready when called upon in his next tour of duty with us.

Jamie McGinn wasn’t impressed he was sent down to the Monsters, but he was also told from management he is considered they’re number one choice to be called upon in need of any backup players if he can keep up his game. He was also told he needed to work on his offensive game more and he’ll be given the chance to with Lake Erie.

There’s some teams today who have put some players on waivers. Two notable players of interest are Daniel Paille from Boston and Right Winger Vladimir Zharkov from the New Jersey Devils. I’d like to claim one of these guys for depth purposes as I’m extremely lacking defensive depth and forward depth in the organization. Zharkov is one dimensional and does have more upside and better hands in scoring but Paille brings more of a balanced game and is good in playing both ends of the ice and playing in all situations. I have a few hours before I make a claim, theres no other teams with a claim for both players at this time so I do stand a good chance on obtaining one of these guys.

Morning News and Notes

- M. Hejduk was injured in the game against the Wild, and will be gone for 10 days with a chest injury.
- Jamie McGinn has been called up from the AHL Lake Erie Monsters

I was considering promoting Landeskog to the first line slot to replace Milan but I think I’ll leave his chemistry with the second line unit and use McGinn instead. I’m also still awaiting word on the Daniel Paille Claim I did yesterday and should know by this afternoon on who receives him.

Evening News and Notes

Good news… this afternoon the Colorado Avalanche received Paille’s rights from the Boston Bruins. We will only need to pay 50% of his 1 million dollar contract and will provide us with some depth on our wings for the moment.

I’d like to swap out a defenseman every few games to get Ryan O’Byrne in to see some action but I’m afraid we have a few roles from other players doing the same thing he add’s to the games element at this moment. With two years remaining on a 1.8 million dollar salary, I might be forced to find a home for him soon as I cannot fathom to have a guy of his stature sit for games on end making that type of salary with two years to boot.

We have a home game against the Minnesota Wild tonight. Just a few days ago we won 3 – 2, I’m expecting a tight defensive game from them. Daniel Paille has been added to our roster, but I’d like to sit him for this game so he can familiarize himself with our players and management for the day.

Shane O’Brien and Chuck Kobasew will be scratches as I haven’t seen the hustle I’ve expected the past few games from them against Minnesota. After my meeting with the coaching staff we took less penalties then usual and made out with a PP goal to say the least. I would like to see this trend continue as we just don't have the defensive awareness and depth in the organization to be a top notch PK unit even though we are doing well on killing them, it may come back and bite us.

With only three games under our belts in the 2011-2012 campaign, We are tied for 1st place in the western division with the Chicago Blackhawks. We are also excited to see Matt Duchene leading the NHL thus far with 8 points and tied for 1st with Ted Purcell in Assists with 6. He is also in the lead for first star of the games with 2 so far as well. David Jones is playing stellar as well as he is in a three way tie for second place with 4 goals.

Morale is high and smiles on everyone’s faces thus far but with only three games in, I want to make sure we keep this momentum going. I have been scouring the league for players which may be available, and one player that has caught my eye is winger David Booth from Vancouver. He has been slotted in on the fourth line there but with so much depth throughout the organization he seems like he’s stuck struggling for ice-time, but at 4.3 million dollars a season and still three more remaining, I’m very skeptical on moving players around to compensate for him if I choose to acquire him and gamble to have him bomb and be stuck with a contract such as his for that duration. He is a great two way talent and can help defensively as well, but I don’t know where he’ll fit with my group of forwards I have now. If I choose to go this route I may need to dump Ryan O’Byrne’s contract and acquire another cheaper defenseman for depth purposes.


On a brighter note Milan Hejduk is recovering from injury and once healthy and made available to play, he’ll most likely finish where he left off in preseason and rack up the points. Jamie McGinn has played decent since his callup so far so I may try and juggle him with Chris Porter on the fourth line at times to give him games but I still think he would be better off down in Lake Erie scoring for them then playing a checking role with us. I'll give him a few more games while Hejduk recovers.

New Jersey Devils seem to be trying to unload some salary, Anton Volchenkov and Henrik Tallinder have been made available to teams as of this evening. I could use an upgrade on my blue-line so I decided to call the Devils GM Lou Lamoriello about acquiring Tallinder, I’m willing to unload Matt Hunwick, and will leave the offer on the table with him for this evening.

Great game tonight against the Ottawa team. 4 straight wins so far, we are first in the NHL and things are looking great so far to the start of this season. We are taking far less penalties, the players have bought into the coaching system so far and everyone seems to be contributing from all positions. Seymon Varlamov has been stellar so far and we can only hope he stays hot from here on in.

During the game this evening I was phoned by Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and he decided to accept a trade that will send Avalanche defenseman Matt Hunwick to them in exchange for defenseman Henrick Tallinder. We are delighted and very excited on acquiring him as not only does he bring a excellent shutdown and passing game he will solidify our blue-line by bringing experience, leadership and the natural ability to be depended on in his own zone. Some people might not look at this trade as very much but I look at this as a complete steal. I would like to thank Mr. Hunwick and wish him all the best in his new ventures, and it was a pleasure having him aboard with us.

I’ve sent Jamie McGinn to the AHL Lake Erie Monsters as he will benefit from the mass amounts of ice-time there, as Milan Hejduk is now healthy enough to be back into the lineup. Chuck Kobasew is my extra forward, he’ll continue to work on his game in practice while his chance will eventually come soon. Newly acquired Henrik Tallinder is now slotted into the lineup and he will be playing alongside Ryan Wilson. We are playing against Toronto in a few days, I plan on keeping my lineup the same with the exception of adding in Hejduk and Tallinder of course.

Bob Hartley informed me that he would be willing to rotate the two O'Brians as we like to call them, around for this season as both seem to not mind the idea, given the amount of ice-time Shane O'Brien will receive in comparision to Ryan O’Byrne, it’s almost dead even. O’Brien does have more skill in terms of keeping up with the play but what O’Byrne lacks in the playmaking department he makes up for in shear size and being that much more dependable in his own end. We’ll see how it plays out, but I’m not sold on the fact both make over a million dollars and one having two more years remaining than the other who is a UFA at seasons end (O’Brien). Since I can’t afford to unload defenseman for just cause, and due to the lack of depth I have, I’ll need to work on trying this out and see where it goes from here.

We kicked off our second game in our Canada trip in which we face-off against a team that’s currently tied for 1st in the east with Tampa, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Our next game is against the Canadians next week, but tonight we have a true test on our hands. O’Byrne will be a healthy scratch in favour of O’Brien, the Leafs have Colton Orr and Mike Brown currently inserted for tonight’s competition so I expect a physical affair. Hejduk is expected to play coming off a two week injury hiatus while Stastny will also get the nod as he is coming off an injury in practice that has sidelined him for almost a week.

We are playing above expectations at the moment, and with our huge victory over the Maple Leafs last night we are aiming to do the same as we roll into Montreal in a few days. In a game where I expected it to be a very physical affair, I was silenced by my own words blasting them with 7 goals instead. Milan Hejduk produced 2 big points in only his first game back from injury that sidelined him for a few weeks. David Jones is playing far beyond expectations at this point and Paul Stastny bagged 4 huge points in one game. Tallinder added his first point coming by assist on our only power play goal of the night. In other news the NHL announced that Avalanche winger Matt Duchene was named offensive player of the week. He registered 1 Goal and 5 Assists for 6 points in a 2 Game span.

I’ve discussed with the coaches a bit of a change and that is if they would consider dropping Mueller to the 3rd line in an attempt to let him play center as he is much more comfortable in that position thus promoting O’Reilly to the first line and adding him to the Left wing position. My face offs have been pretty decent so far but with moving Mule to the third line I’m sure we can get a little more opportunity in giving us more chances in the opponents zone with the increase in face offs won.

Coming off another victory, and dispatching the Canadians by 6 goals, we also lost our coverage in a handful of plays and gave up 5 in the process. Our faceoff percentage was 52 % with Mueller going 7 wins and 17 lost draws which isn’t impressive for the lineup change experiment mentioned to the coaching regiment but he did skate away with a goal, Paulie not only registered another huge 4 points like last game against the Leafs but went 21 and 2 on faceoff draws, Duchie with 9 and 11 and Clemmer with a 6 and zero effort. Ryan O’Reilly who was moved from third line center added a goal and a pair of assist’s so he certainly meshed well with his new linemates. I’d like to update the status of defenseman Ryan Wilson as he will be out of action for around 10 days with a broken finger. He broke it in a scrum with Travis Moen during the second period of last night’s game.

We didn’t get into the PIM trouble they did as tough guy Zack Stortini was caught for a brutal cross-check, and not only drawing blood giving us a five minute power play also received a misconduct for his efforts and allowed us to score three big goals in the process. Next game is against Boston tomorrow night and it should be a dandy

Tonight we play the Bruins. Varlie is playing like every game is a game 7, the team’s mentality is in win mode and even though the bruins are 2 -2 – 0 this season, they are still the defending Stanley cup champions. Paulie is still nursing an injury but he’s available to play a limited role and one of my best defenseman Ryan Wilson is out for another week, so Ryan O’Byrne will get another game under his belt. Chuck Kobasew who’s been looking good in practice, and trying to force himself into the lineup has been a healthy scratch for 6 games, I’ll concur with the coaches tomorrow and see where he fits into our plans. There was talk he would be rotated with Paille this season.

An absolute huge win for us and a nice winning streak to start the season going 7 for 7, we are now first in the entire league with another big opponent for us in 4 days, the Los Angeles Kings. This should give Stastny some time to get fully healthy and Ryan Wilson will certainly embrace this as well. Some negative news out of all this is I’ve been advised from the coaches that Steve Downie hasn’t played to expectations, with only 1 assist and low ratings for inconsistency and a -6, I believe if the time is right on getting full value, I will need to find a trading partner soon. I do not want to ruin the team’s chemistry but the coaching regiment does not believe Steve is a good fit for the core group we have here and a player of his stature should be producing or participating more then he has.

- Ryan Wilson will still be out for a few more days to heal a broken finger from earlier this week

The Philadelphia Flyers would like to make a deal. They are willing to trade young blue chip prospect Matt Read and defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon in exchange for Steve Downie. Read is an offensive player who should be capable of putting up 25-40 points a season, and has a lot of potential, Bourdon is a defenseman who plays a basic game of patrolling his blue line and clearing the crease of other opponents.

Its day three of our four day break and we’ve made a trade. Flyers accepted the trade that will see Matt Read and Marc-Andre Bourdon come to Colorado in exchange for forward Steve Downie. Steve is a great player, and warrior but he couldn’t seem to find a way to play his kinda game here with our forwards playing so well so far this season. We wish him the best in Philly.

A source from a scouting agency, believes a defensive prospect of mine Troy Rudkowski of the WHL Portland Winter Hawks has potential to be a key player someday and recommends him as a premier prospect. Rudkowski has played 10 games, scoring twice and adding 16 assists for 18 points this season. I have dispatched a few scouts to watch him play and would like them to evaluate and report they’re opinions when they have done so.

Matt Read and Marc Andre Bourdon have been introduced and interviewed by the media today, and the both of them are very happy to be part of the Avalanche organization and are thrilled to be part of a legacy that Colorado has built and had built in the past.

In preparation of tomorrows night’s game, we have decided to scratch Daniel Pallie and give Chuck Kobasew a chance to play as he has been sharp in practice this past week. Newcomers Read will take Downie’s old spot on the third line and play alongside, Mueller and Kobasew. Bourdon will take O’Briens spot as he is still out sporting a injury, he should be ready to go in a few days from now.

We were handed our first loss of the season and dethroned by the number two team in the western conference, nudging us down to 2nd in the West. The team played an outstanding game with Varlamov playing as his stellar self as did LA’s Jonathan Quick. Jones, Mueller and O’Reilly all had 2 point games. Hejduk and Stastny scored in the Shootout but with Kobasew shooting as the third man, he missed with the LA Kings winning by Shootout victory.

Newcomers Bourdon was a minus 1 in the game and Matt Read was a 6 rating playing average at best but I believe it will take a few games for them to adjust to our style and the team’s chemistry.

- Jay McClement sidelined for a week with a groin strain. He left the game against the Red Wings during the third period.

We were handed our second loss in a row. We took a few needless penalties but only gave up the one power play marker. Varlie played average and is beginning to look a tad worn down. Word is Jiggy will start next game against the Washington Capitals who arrive here in a few days.

Matt Read has been sent down to the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters. He has played 9 games total this season and has just 1 assist and a very low confidence level. I want him to work on his game down there and get his confidence back. He is a very talented winger but needs to be broken in the league slowly and carefully.

Jamie McGinn has been called up to the Colorado Avalanche. He has played 6 games with Lake Erie totalling 3 goals and 1 assist to lead them thus far this season.
