EHM 2004 - Patch effects?

If I download the v1.0.1 patch from Download.com will I have to start a new game for the patch to take effect or will some of the bugs be wiped out?

I think the official explanation has been that patches will take effect in saved games, but you need to start a new game for the "best results".
