Adding logos for obscure leagues

Post by BlackCats101 »

Is it possible to add logos for the obscure leagues not featured in the game, such as the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League? When I tried to add the league logo it did not show...

Yeah you need to use PNG or JPG. PNG is higher quality but also a larger file size.

True, and the gap gets larger the larger the file. All pieces found within the skins folders have to be only .png files. Pictures can be jpgs but if there are two files for the same player one a .jpg and one a .png the .png will show instead (and the SI-specific .ehg extension which is just a .png renamed will show instead of either).

The reason the skins are .png only is that they actually sport a comparative size advantage to .jpgs of the same size for small and especially very small graphics, the majority of the game is made up of a lot of repeated 1 pixel by 5 pixel files, and each square button for example is constructed from nine files like this:

XXX
XXX
XXX

For the .pngs those might be 1 k but a .jpg would be 3 or 4k and multiplied by hundreds that is a big overall impact.

So the advantages of .png graphics: superior overall looks and the essential to the game's look/function superior transparency handling combined with being "tighter" in size usage for small files are ideal. For these same reasons you should do icons and other images in game as png especially to take advantage of the transparency ability and the additional clarity/detail you can get from them.

It's just from a full page backround in .png format being like 400k larger than a similar looking .jpeg that we pay for the decision

Well, first it would be on us not you really as the distributors. However, since we aren't charging for files, selling a copy of the game with our projects preloaded, charging for access or pressing CD compilations and charging for them nor are we making any whiff of profit from running TBL they can't say we are "profiting from use of copyright images" which is where things get dicey legally.

Yes, there is probably copyrighted material as sources in pretty much any graphics project we carry but they are just for users of the game and it would be difficult to argue we aren't within the "fair use" umbrella.

However if anyone is ever concerned about such issues just mention in the file description upon upload that you want to remain uncredited as author. If you're uncomfortable with it that is ;)

The easiest way of dealing with copyright laws is ask yourself two questoins.

Am I gaining money from this?
Is somebody loseing money from this?

If the anwser to both is 'no' then your fine.

Yup. Usually the only fan sites that get in any amount of trouble are by some degree of official intervention from the game's company and we all have SI's enouragement and support and they know of all EHM projects really and haven't ever said they have any problem with them. So we are far less likely to have even a first question about copyright issues and at worst we take down a file any copyright holder contacted us and/or SI about.

As far as likelyhood of even that? I'm proabably more likely to make the cast of Saturday Night Live or run my own theater before we have an add-on copyright challenge. 8-)
