Think you're a good EHM GM? Our GM Challenges dare you to take over a team and make it a winner. The Challenge Forum and Centre are the hubs of our Challenges.
jbsnadb wrote:I think that will definitely help, along with sufficient trading restrictions. Seeing Oiler squads with Carter, Malkin, Crosby, Ovechkin, etc. was - IMHO - patently ridiculous, especially since those players were acquired at the expense of prospects to be developed. I know it was complicated, but I would not be averse to bringing back the homegrown rules to some degree to both guarantee prospects remain in your system and to stop the crazy trades for top-calibre players.
Perhaps the one-for-one trades will do that. If the Pens want to give up Malkin straight-up for Penner or Horcoff, then I can't begrudge someone for pulling the trigger. But getting him because of trading Gagner and MPS (for example) defeats the whole purpose of what the CHALLENGEs try to accomplish.
I couldn't agree more (in regards to the crazy trades). I hate seeing these. Controlling the trades has been a continual battle with these challenges. Moving forward, we're going with just 1 for 1 trades. Hopefully that will put a stop to some of the outlandish deals we've seen.
jbsnadb wrote:And I do feel the need to call some of these deals into question since so many people posted "Players In" screenshots instead of "Trades" during this challenge and did this for multiple seasons. Is there someone tasked to mointor this type of thing (during the actual challenge) so the problems can be rectified?
We try to check the screenshots in the challenge stats thread as they get posted but sometimes we miss some or just don't get to them all. There isn't any one person assigned to monitoring them. We've all got busy lives and it's a lot to dump on one person. By having these screenshots posted in the forum where everyone can see them, our hope is that the challenge participants will be "self-policing". If everyone does there part and takes a look at screens when they can and then speak out if they see a problem, it will be easier to manage. If you see something wrong, tell us. You can either post something in the challenge chat thread or even better, PM me or one of the other mods involved in the challenges. Then we can try to follow up on it.
McQwak wrote:As for trades: I think we already found solution. We can use reputation combined with 1-1 or in some case 2-2 trades.
I already suggested such trade limits, which should work well.
And as for developing players: I mentioned it couple of months ago, too, but... what about to set minimum number of seasons required?
b72 wrote valid arguments against my suggestions
Sorry, McQwak! I hate to crush your creative flow.
Seriously though... they're great ideas, just very difficult to manage.
jbsnadb wrote:I think that the length of challenge should be extended, with at least three seasons played.
What do you think about points being awarded over the life of the challenge rather than season by season? Do you think that might encourage consistency of roster? Am I way off base? I'm starting to feel that way
Can you elaborate on that a bit more? Are you suggesting we change the player stats portion to be cumulative? For example, Horcoff is your top scorer and scores 103 points in season 1, then scores 97 in season 2, and then puts up 105 in season 3. When posting the season 3 stats, we'd show 305 points for Horcoff. Another person's top scorer might have been Hemsky in season 1 with 105, then Hemsky had 107 in season 2. In season 3 Hemsky is traded for Malkin. Even though Malkin scores 110 points in season 3 and leads the team in scoring that season, he's not the cumulative points leader. Maybe Horcoff is now the player with the most points total over the 3 seasons now. Say he put up 95 in season 1, 100 in season 2, and 101 in season 3. That's 296 total over the 3 seasons. That person that traded for Malkin now gets less points than the person that kept their roster in tact. Is that what you're getting at? It's an interesting idea but also a colossal thing to manager and probably confusing for a lot of the challenge participants.
Sorry to the multiple posts but I wanted to respond to many of the comments made here. It's great that we have that many people that care about the challenges and want to try to make them better.
Since there seems to be so much interest in longer challenges, I'm going to put a poll up in this forum and we'll see what kind of a response we get from everyone. If enough people are interested in a longer challenge, I'd be all for it. One of the main reasons we currently run the challenges for 2 months is because we've noticed in the past that after 2 months, we get a drastic drop in stats reported. It's seemed like the majority of the people lost interest. Still, we'll see what kind of response we get on the poll.

I realized mid-post what a colossal pain in the tush managing something like that would be.
Part of the fall-off in "interest" could be that too many people (like myself in the past two challenges) are close but not quite finished with the season they were in, and see no way to rush things along just to get stats or screenies posted.
As far as policing of the screenshot errors, I did not mean to imply that someone had fallen asleep on the job in any way. I hold myself responsible for not saying anything as it happened, assuming someone else had already done so, or it would seem callous and rude to suggest the error in the public forum. Honestly, I had made such monumental blunders with my roster (Penner for Boogaard and Kobasew - dear Lord, what was I thinking?) that I stayed away from posting in the forum most times anyway.
I personally think we should add a screenshot of the Players In to make sure all signings are legit (as to their timing that is).
I'm looking forward to the next challenge (especially since I am not a follower of the junior leagues living in an NHL city) and continuing to play my newly revitalized Oiler franchise.

Another thing that might affect the participants could be the way some of them are playing the game. As it has been discussed here, people swing past the seasons in a hurry and make those blockbuster trades, instead of developing their youngster and prospects and tweaking tactics, so that they end up having a superb roster after 3 or more years and just winning Cup after Cup. I'm not trying to mock anyones playing style here as I've played that way myself in the past. Sure, it's nice to win and see your superstar make a lot of points, but winning all the time just makes the game boring really fast. But that's just my opinion. I'm still always dissapointed when I don't win the cup, but on the other hand I see an opportunity to improve my tactics, find that special prospect from the draft who can help the team most and so on.
Lidas wrote:Making the challenge longer makes a lot of sense.
The aim of the challenge is focusing on developing your own roster instead of trading and bringing in UFAs - but as it is now, not many players we draft (and quite few prospects too) actually get developed enough to make the first squad. Making it longer would make it possible to actually use your prospects.
couldnt agree more. in last oilers challange only me and one more manager devolped Hall to a star. The rest didnt get him or didnt play long enough.
I had mediocre spots in the draft at best but still some drafted players from different years came through in my fourth season, which I sadly didn't manage to complete in time.
I'm up for Lidas vision!
The rules regarding end of season screenshots have been changed. The End of Season Individual Player Stats screenshot should be taken in the month of May instead of June in CHL (WHL, OHL, and QMJHL) challenges due to reserve list juggling. Due to the draft, top scoring players (likely Overagers) may be waived and then no proof of their stats would be available after that.
Stats recording question. In season 2 Q4 my highest +/- rating for a skater is -2, of course the goalies are both listed as 0 since they do not get +/- ratings. DO I record the skater or the goalie as my highest +/- rating?
One more rules clarification. If I've had two players signed away before taking my stats screenshot. One of which was my leading PIM guy. Do I need to take a screeshot of the history for both guys or just the leading PIM guy? I have taken both just incase. I just want to know if I need to post both.
If only one of the players signed away is leading in a category, you just need a screen of his history. If both lead in a category (say one leads PIM and another leads +/-) then you need a screen of the playing history (which will show his totals with your team) for both.
HI me again! So I had a brain fart the other day and forgot about the trading window restrictions. I made a trade in early November. Now the guy I traded away was down with the legionaries, and the guy I traded for has so far only played one game for me. I haven't dressed him since I realized it was an illegal trade. My questions is should I keep him off my roster? Or should I play him if I need him?
I'm assuming I'm getting a penalty either way though.

I could be wrong, but the Trade window re-opens on October 16th? I think your fine, but confirm that one.
6.2 The following no trade periods apply every season (starting from Season 2):
15 July - 15 October (both dates are inclusive). If a trade is not confirmed, and the traded for player is not on your roster by July 14th, the trade cannot be completed. Further, we know it takes a few days to make a trade in most cases, so there should not be any confirmed trades on October 16th in your game.
Unless my reading comprehension is off - you're OK.

No apperenly MY reading comprehension is off is I read it as the opposite. I apperently missed so many words and thought that 15 July - 15 October was our trading period. THose that look at my screenshots from seaons 2, 3 and 4 will see that I wanted until after July 15h to make the trades.
So apperently this is only season I've made a legal trade. Whoops.
