Basics of EHM 2005 Online

Post by shooter_80 »

Playing EHM 05 in an online league is much different than playing a solo game. First and foremost you get to play against 29 other “human” GM’s instead of AI Gm’s. As you may know from playing countless hours of EHM – the AI can get pretty easy to beat and the challenge becomes less and less. In online play, the challenge is always there. You are constantly wheeling and dealing with fellow GM’s and get caught in bidding wars for players, etc. Always trying to make sure you stay one step ahead of your division rival!

How does an online game work?

Usually, a GM in the league “hosts” the game. The “host” has the EHM 05 game up and running on his/her computer at all times. The IP address is then given out to all of the current GM’s. This allows all of the GM’s 24 hour access to the game to make their changes, browse around, discuss trades, etc. In the DMHNL – the game is continued (or “simmed”) forward 4 days “in-game” for every 1 day in real life. It is found that this is a good pace which is both not too fast but also not too slow for people to get bored. The offseason’s schedule is usually broken down to be quicker and GM’s are well notified in advance.

What is a live sim?

Sometimes, in order to generate trade banter and get the GM’s together there is something called a “live sim”. A live sim is a normal sim but allows GM’s to be in the game while it happens. This allows the GM’s to watch their teams in action as well as coach their respective teams if they like. During the season in DM we try to hold at least one live sim a week. During the playoffs, all sims are live. Participation is not mandatory – it is just an added option for GM’s to get more out of the game and have fun.

Do I need anything more than EHM 05?

Yes. You need to have Skype as this allows other GM’s to chat with you about trades. Most importantly, Skype is used to coordinate the entry draft as well as live sims that take place.

Do I need to attend the entry draft?

No. A couple of weeks leading up to the draft, there will be a poll posted on the forum on possible days for the draft. GM’s through out the league vote on the day that suits them best. If you are unable to attend the draft – no need to worry. You can send you draft list to a commissioner and they will draft for you according to your list’s availability.

The game freezes on me sometimes - am I doing something wrong?

No. Sometimes with multiple people accessing the game at once it creates a game error on the host computer. There is a program called VNC and this allows people to have access to the host PC. This allows people with such access the ability to unfreeze the game as well as saving the game.

Lastly...how do you sign up?

Our sign-up thread. All necessary information can be find in the first post.
