Assigning draft picks to AHL teams

Post by Jonhw »

Another problem! Im starting to realise i know almost nothing about the business side of hockey. I got 2 pretty gd draft picks for my Red Wings team at the end of my 1st season (in which i won the cup woohoo!). They have high stats and come highly recommended by my scouts, so i reckoned sign em up, assign them to the Grand Rapids Griffins, and bring them back up to my Wings roster wen injuries hit. However after signing them and letting them clear waivers, it wont actually let me send them down to the Griffins. Have i done something very wrong with their contracts? Any help appreciated

If they are from North America and under 20 you can't send them down unless you put them on waivers again.

A good rule of thumb is to let these players stay with their junior team until they are 20.

For players that have teams in the Canadian Juniors listed as owning thier rights you can sign them at any time to play for your NHL team. However you cannot assign them to the minors because the Canadian team owns their rights still. You should be able to send them back to play with their Junior teams. Once they turn 20 you can sign them and send them down if you'd like.

You could always take over the player's CHL team and release him before actually signing him. I've done that a couple of times. :)

What's wrong with that? It was his (Benoit Pouliots) last junior season, and his team was out of the playoffs. And my AHL team needed help. :)

I think that this rule is defunct. NHL and CHL used to have an agreement that U-20 players, who have their CHL rights held by certain team, can't be sent to american minor leagues like the AHL. However, if I remember correctly, that agreement shouldn't be valid anymore.
