Introducing WebSimHockey.com

Post by archibalduk »

For those of you who have not come across this thread about WebSimHockey.com, I thought it would be useful to post a brief introduction. I've recently signed up to one of WebSimHockey's leagues and will in the future be able to provide more detailed impressions of their game.

What is WebSimHockey?
WebSimHockey is an online hockey GM simulation game, similar to playing Eastside Hockey Manager online. Each league comprises of up to 24 teams, each managed by a human player. WebSimHockey has developed a GM Replacement System that helps ensure that if a player leaves a league, they are quickly replaced by a new player.

I've personally tried a couple of online web-based hockey GM games before but have always been turned off by their basic design and features - kind of like playing a very cheap watered-down version of EHM. Although I've only signed up to WebSimHockey today, it's clear that a lot of thought has gone into the design and features. It has a professional look and doesn't feel cheap; hence I'm happy to give it good coverage on TBL. Ericb mentioned that several years went into testing before the game went live which is very reassuring.

It doesn't yet quite match the level of depth and features of EHM (but it still has an impressively wide range of features indeed ), but the guys at WebSimHockey are continuing to develop the game and are enthusiastic to hear what the community wants. You'll see here that they want to know what the EHM and TBL community thinks of the game and what they'd like to see added. This is a great opportunity for us to help mould the future of game and hopefully see an online browser-based true alternative to EHM. Version 2.0 of the game is planned for the future and I'm hopeful we could see something that could rival EHM in terms of depth and features.

Recent improvements to the game include:
  • Improved user interface
  • Player types
  • Trophies (individual and team)
  • New “card” mode for to make it easy to view attributes
  • New lineup page
  • New strategy/practice module
  • Multiple minor upgrades
There is a wide range of rosters you can use as the starting point for your league, going back as far as the 1983/84 NHL season. Work has begun on adding the Finnish league and there may well be the Russian KHL in the future.

This page helps demonstrate the range of attributes the game covers. Although it's not as wide-ranging as EHM, it is still a good range - I count 17 different attributes. The game features two different types of player development ('Virtual Evolution' and 'Real Evolution') - so players develop over their careers just like they would in EHM or real life.

What is the cost?
Perhaps the reason why the game is of good quality is because it charges a subscription. The site does offer an Individual Demo Mode Subscription Mode for users who want to try it out before deciding whether to subscribe.

The standard subscription costs are:
  • First season cost per GM: CA$19.95 (approx US$20.88 / €13.54 / £12,71)
  • Season renewal cost per GM: CA$14.95 (approx US$15.65 / €10.89 / £9.52)
