Cap issue question

Post by tmratlif »

Howdy everyone,

I am no stranger to this game and my current save with the Kings is in the year 2044. In all that time I have never had this happen to me and of course it picked that absolute wrong time of year to do it.

This was after the trade deadline and I want to say was around game 70 or so. My 38 year old star defenseman blew out a knee and was done for the season (sadly so was my playoff hopes). Instead of putting him on the IR like I meant too I hit the waive button followed by sending him down to the AHL team. I realized my mistake right away and instantly called him back up. In doing so I got the message telling me he had to go through re-entry waivers which I thought was odd since he hadn't even cleared the first waiver. Anyways the dam Blackhawks claimed him and I got the message that half of the salary would go toward my cap. Before this happened I was at least 3 million below the max and this d-man was making 4.5 million a year. Half of that is 2.25 million which if added to what I had before would still keep me below the max. Well it didn't I ended up being like 50k over and it didn't matter what I did I could not get below the max and stay there. I ended up losing most of my AHL and NHL depth just so I could play out the regular season and playoffs.

I went from being a solid cup contender too a second round flame out because of this one mistake. My question is why did this happen and is my thinking on it wrong? Again I didn't mean to waive him but I also do not want to repeat this. I lost a lot of talent to the point I about started over. Still it will take me a few years to recover from this.

I don't really get how you accidentally waived the player... a giant dialog box comes up and basically asks you "DO YOU REALLY WANT TO WAIVE THIS PLAYER?", then you have to click "yes" in order to actually do it.

Anyway, as far as your cap issue, did you add in the player's salary that you subsequently used to replace him? Also, I don't see how you can lose "a lot of talent" to make up $50k... That's one player. You had nobody waiver exempt that you could send down and just play short handed?

I thought the exact same thing. Merely sending a fringe player to the AHL at any point should provide enough relief of a prorated $50,000 overage. I'm kind of confused as to how all this went down and was subsequently handled.

It was very late and I was very tired is why I waived him. I wasn't paying attention.

For the actual problem that is why I posted it here cause nothing I did lowered my below the cap. I would waive a player and drop below until the waiver time had passed then I would be right back above the cap again and not allowed to continue until I repeated the process. After awhile I ran out of fringe players to waive and had to start waiving guys i didn't want to lose.

Trust me I won't make the same mistake again by waiving a star player by accident. I was more curious as too why I kept being put over the cap over and over again. Anyways I am already 2 seasons past this one so all turned out well.
