Early January 2008, World Junior Hockey Championship Playoffs



January 3rd

IceDogs goaltender Chris Festarini is named to the Team Cherry Roster for the CHL Top Prospects game.



January 5th

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Barrie Colts. Chris Festarini stopped 18 of the 21 shots he faced, and though the Colts scored with just two minutes left to tie the game, the IceDogs would score just seconds later to take the victory!

World Junior Championship, Quarter-Finals



Sweden vs. Finland

Finland defeat Sweden 5-3! First star honours would go to Finnish center Alexander Barkov, who scored a goal, and an assist. Second star would go to Finnish winger Teuvo Teravainen, who scored a hat trick. Third star would go to Finnish winger Markus Granlund, who scored a goal, and two assists.



Russia vs. USA

The USA defeat Russia 3-1! First star honours would go to American center Alex Galchenyuk, who scored two goals, and an assist. Second star would go to American goaltender John Gibson, who stopped 24 of 25 shots in the victory. Third star would go to American winger Shane McColgan, who scored a goal, and an assist.



In Relegation League action, Denmark defeat Slovakia 4-3, and Norway defeat Germany 3-0!



January 6th

The IceDogs travel to play the Sarnia Sting. Backup goaltender Joel Vienneau will get the start in goal for Niagara. Joel Vienneau stopped only 9 of the 13 shots he faced before being pulled in favor of Chris Festarini, who stopped 18 of 20 shots the rest of the way, as the IceDogs got schooled by Sarnia!

First star honours would go to Sarnia Sting center Ludvig Rensfeldt, who scored a goal, and an assist. Second star would go to Sarnia Sting defenseman Keegan Harper, who scored a goal, and an assist. Third star would go to Sarnia Sting center Dylan Smoskowitz, who recorded two assists.



In Relegation Group action, Slovakia defeat Norway 3-0, and Denmark defeat Germany 4-3!

Norway and Germany have been relegated, they will be replaced at next years World Junior Championship by France and Kazakhstan, who won their Division 1 Groups!



January 7th

The IceDogs announce the completion of a trade with the Oshawa Generals, trading winger Petr Beranek, and Kingston's 2nd Round Pick in this summers OHL Priority Selection to the Generals in exchange for winger Nicklas Jensen!

Beranek played 40 games for the IceDogs this season, putting up 7 (4+3) points, and was -4 with 14 penalty minutes.

Jensen played 20 games for the Generals this season, putting up 18 (4+14) points, and was -2, with 6 penalty minutes. He also played 10 games with the Vancouver Canucks, putting up no points. He was also a key cog in the machine as Denmark avoided relegation at the World Junior Championship!



World Junior Championship, Semi-Finals



USA vs. Canada

Canada defeat USA 5-2! First star honours would go to Canadian center Michael St. Croix, who scored two goals, and an assist. Second star would go to Canadian defenseman Ryan Murray, who recorded an assist. Third star would go to Canadian defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who recorded an assist.



IceDogs defenseman Dougie Hamilton played 18:18, recorded an assist, was Even, served 2 penalty minutes, and had 2 shots on goal, 1 hit, 2 shot blocks, and 2 takeaways as Canada defeated USA 5-2! He was named the games third star!



Finland vs. Czech Republic

Finland defeat Czech Republic 3-2! First star honours would go to Finnish winger Miikka Salomaki, who scored a goal. Second star would go to Finnish center Miro Aaltonen, who recorded an assist. Third star would go to Czech defenseman David Musil, who recorded an assist.



Belleville Bulls center Joseph Crammarosa is named OHL Player of the Week. In 3 games he scored 3 goals, and 4 assists.



January 9th



Bronze Medal Game, USA vs. Czech Republic

Czech Republic defeat USA 4-3 in overtime! First star honours would go to Czech winger Martin Frk, who scored a goal, and two assists. Second star would go to American center Vincent Trochek, who scored a goal, and two assists. Third star would go to American center Stefan Matteau, who scored a goal, and an assist.



Gold Medal Game, Sweden vs. Canada

Canada defeat Finland 5-1! First star honours would go to Canadian center Boone Jenner, who scored two goals. Second star would go to Canadian center Michael St. Croix, who scored a goal, and an assist. Third star would go to Canadian goaltender Robert Steeves, who stopped 24 of 25 shots in the victory!

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Sudbury Wolves. Chris Festarini stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced, and the IceDogs dominated the ice in all areas of play, taking a decisive victory!

Chris Festarini stopped 4 of the 5 shots he faced before leaving the game with a twisted knee, giving way to Joel Vienneau, who stopped 21 of 22 shots the rest of the way, as the IceDogs offense scored five goals in the victory!

January 16th

The IceDogs remain at home to play host to the Sarnia Sting. Joel Vienneau stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced, and the IceDogs took an early 4-0 lead, and despite a couple late Sarnia goals managed to hold them at bay in the victory!

January 19th

Team Davidson defeat Team Cherry 5-1 in the CHL Top Prospects Game from the J.Benson Cartage Centre in Ottawa, Ontario! First star honours would go to Team Davidson goaltender Jaroslav Pavelka (Windsor Spitfires), who stopped 34 of 35 shots in the victory. Second star would go to Team Davidson winger Jordan Durand (Shawinigan Cataractes), who scored two goals. Third star would go to Team Davidson defenseman Artem Sergeev (Val d'Or Foreurs), who recorded an assist.

IceDogs goaltender Chris Festarini was the third string goaltender for Team Cherry. He did not play in the game.



January 21st

The IceDogs remain at home to play host to the Owen Sound Attack. Joel Vienneau stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced, and though the Attack scored early in the third to tie the game 2-2, the IceDogs would score twice more in the third to take the victory!

The IceDogs remain at home to play host to the Oshawa Generals. Chris Festarini stopped 28 of the 34 shots he faced, and Oshawa just kept coming in waves, completely overpowering the IceDogs defense!

The IceDogs return home to the Gatorade Garden City Complex in St. Catharines to play host to the opening game of their Eastern Conference Quarter-Final series against the Brampton Battalion. Chris Festarini stopped 21 of the 22 shots he faced, and the IceDogs scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game, and held the Battalion off the rest of the way!

IceDogs training camp opened today with physical fitness testing. Showing exceptional fitness were defenseman Drake Milne, and winger Scott Polulok, while tryout center Pierre-Marc Duchesne, and goaltender Chris Festarini left something to be desired.

Team Red defeat Team Blue 5-1! Best performance was put in by center Mathew Campagna, with honours also going to winger Julien McNeely, and defenseman Kris Dube.

Team White defeat Team Green 3-2! Best performance was put in by center Devin Hill, with honours also going to center Pierre-Andre Nobel, and defenseman Luke Mercer.

IceDogs winger Radko Tvrznik will miss a week with a shoulder contusion.

September 21st

The IceDogs remain at home to open their season, playing host to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. Chris Festarini stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced, and the IceDogs got out to a 4-0 lead early, and while Mississauga scored a couple in the third, they never really threatened to come back!

Sudbury Wolves center Yoann Trottier is named OHL Player of the Week. In 2 games he scored 3 goals, and an assist.

The IceDogs travel to play the Sudbury Wolves. Chris Festarini stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced in the game, and though the score was tied 1-1 after the first period, Niagara would score three unanswered goals to take the victory!
