If he's never played in the Canadian Hockey League, he should be able to play for your farm clubs even if a CHL team has his rights.

Re: Standard signing, individual player question thread
Quick question: If I draft a player and sign him, then send to juniors before the season starts, will that take a year off his contract or not? I know IRL that it wont affect it but i wanted to know if this apply to the game too?

What are the main characteristics/stats of a defenseman?
Sorry if I'm asking this in the wrong topic.

Anticipation, Bravery, Checking, Pokecheck and Positioning are the ones that come to mind instantly. There are propably others too that are useful in defense.Tavares97 wrote:What are the main characteristics/stats of a defenseman?

Speed is always good, no matter the position. I also like d-men to be good hitters

Re: Standard signing, individual player question thread
Dennis Seindenberg is really good, though he his a little bit over evaluated by the other and he can cost alot in a trade. While playing with the Blue Jackets I was surprised how much Marc Methot is usefull but he is more a 5-6 Dman.

Re: Standard signing, individual player question thread
Hey everyone,
Have the latest Manimal db. I have a struggling player, Duncan Keith, that was struggling before I traded for him on the cheap. How do I get him going again?
And, any tips for signing players on a long term contract? ex. Parise is only asking for 1 yr contracts, and Tedenby as an RFA, I can't sign him at all for a long time.
Thanks!

I'm no tactics magician at all but I guess Kieth is a bit like Visnovsky. I almost only have success with that type of d-men when playing them as a "fourth forward". They seem to be extremely prone to letting breakaways through so forget defense and go all offence with them to get their rating the +/- up.NJdevs9 wrote:Hey everyone,

Just offer them more money at the length you want and if they accept they accept, if they don't just try next year and get them even happier during that time.

Thanks, now what about players that refuse to discuss contract negotiations? It looks like I won't even get a chance until July 1st, including RFA's too.

Re: Standard signing, individual player question thread
Yeah, that happens a lot. Just offer them enough to keep their rights and they'll sign after July 1st. If they don't sign right away just invite them to training camp and sign them then.
It's frustrating, but once you get the hang of the game's AI it's pretty easy to re-sign your players.

Best players to sign
Morning all! Can someone help me out? Im struggling to sign/trade any decent players for my capitals team in my first season. Iv all but given up trying to get a 4star very good reputation player in, tried offering 4star players to trade but its just not happening. All i can get is basically rubbish nobody else wants.
Any ideas?

Draft and develop players (my preferred method), sign Free Agents in the summer...maybe trading opportunities will be better at another time (like at the Trade deadline)mrlincolncity wrote:No one any tips or ideas?

Re: Standard signing, individual player question thread
To be fair the AI is very reluctant to give up anything good unless you offer something good (that they want) in exchange. If you do then you can get much better deals. From what I can tell the basics are really:mrlincolncity wrote:Morning all! Can someone help me out? Im struggling to sign/trade any decent players for my capitals team in my first season. Iv all but given up trying to get a 4star very good reputation player in, tried offering 4star players to trade but its just not happening. All i can get is basically rubbish nobody else wants.
Any ideas?
1. If it says untradeable, then it's untradeable.
2. If it's a 5 star player, expect to give up a couple 1sts or a 5 star of your own(unless the player is on the block).
3. Your best bets are:
a. UFA (unrestricted free agents), pick these up at the end of the season for nothing, mostly they are depth players but occasionally something good comes up.
b. RFA (restricted free agents), again at the end of season these come up but go to offer sheets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offer_sheet) - you'll give up a pick or two for these so decide if it's worth it. You can offer whatever you want, but they can decline, there is also the option for their team to match it if they accept so if you go too low you might not get the player at all as it'll get matched.
c. Waivers - teams are looking to drop some cap by assigning to the minors - so you can claim them on the way through. Again it's mostly depth players but occasionally something good shows up.
d. Players on the block - teams are looking to trade these guys, often for cap room so you can get some good players if you have room.
4. If the player is rated 2 stars or less, adding them in will only make the deal LESS attractive. This is sometimes true of 3 star players depending on AI needs.
5. 6th and 7th picks are essentially worthless.
6. Although you can offer a lot of 3 star players for something good, it's likely to put them over the roster limits or cap, so rarely does this go through.
7. As above, choosing the right team to trade with is everything, some GMs are more willing to deal, they have different needs and ratings for your players, or just more cap and roster room to play with.
8. It may be easier at the trade deadline, but again it comes down to needs. Teams out of the playoffs won't want to give up picks easily, but might be interested in yours. The opposite is true at the top. If you're after picks you'll get more trading early, but it's a gamble on where that time might finish.
9. Use the 'Gauge interest' option frequently. If it doesn't say "we'll need to take some time to think about this" or something more definite then don't waste time offering it, but you can use this button a lot til you get an idea what they want - then you just have to decide if it's worth it.
10. Use your picks wisely to fill the gaps, it's not all about picking the highest player possible(unless there really isn't anything else worth having), and it's unlikely you'll be able to trade up significantly in the draft (although it is possible).
Basically just be realistic, if you wouldn't take it, chances are the AI won't. That's not to say they don't do some bizarre things and give you some great deals, but you have to get lucky to get those.

Re: Standard signing, individual player question thread
Oh and you can also trade away the rights to prospects, as these don't count against roster limits - again though, if they aren't good, the AI probably won't want them, and if they are, you won't want to give them up!
Scout reports are a bit off too, I gave up a "3rd line potential" and two years later he shows as a 1st line potential - that's quite badly wrong for 4 different scouts!!

Re: Standard signing, individual player question thread
Nice one, iv got the idea now, making some changes at last. Got 3/4 young players with good stats in and off loaded a few big earning fringe players. Managed to get Brassard from NYR as well, which i thought was good but turned out to be just an average player with good reputation and a massive wage! Got rid after 10 games!!
