Question about speed

I just recently bought a new laptop (i3 chip), and compared to my desktop, EHM runs pretty slowly.

Now, they are no where near the same spec wise, but I'm wondering what EHM benefits from the most?

Would an SSD be the best solution? Improving the processor? What would be your suggestion?

To be clear, I'm referring to the time it takes to calculate between each day (ie. everytime you push continue)

It may be a side question, but would this apply to FHM as well? I'd like to be futureproof too.

Did you set the detail of the leagues that you are not playing in to "Quick Sim" or "None" ? When they are all on full the game really bogs down.

A long while back, I upgraded from my old laptop (a Core 2 Duo at about 1.8 or 2 Ghz to an i7 Quad at 2 Ghz). The difference in sim speed was fairly small. Given that in reality the i7 I have is far, far faster and more powerful than my old Core 2 Duo, the improvement in EHM's sim speed was very small indeed. I doubt EHM was programmed to take advantage of multi-core processors and so I think there is probably only so fast it'll go.

I did a bit of a speed test of EHM last year and found that when running the game, my CPU's Turbo Boost would kick in. This is a feature of the i5 and i7 whereby the CPU can shut down some of its cores in order to increase its CPU clock speed. Presumably EHM didn't need/want to use the multi-core functions and so my CPU shut 3 of its 4 cores down and ran at a speed of 2.9 Ghz. So in terms of clock speed, I am running EHM at a 50% higher speed than my old CPU - but I don't think I'm getting anything near a 50% faster sim speed as a result.

In short, I think so long as you have a modern CPU, it isn't worth upgrading to a newer CPU as you won't see any real performance increase.

With regards to RAM, so long as you have 3 or 4gb you'll be fine. You won't notice any improvement with any more RAM than this.

I'm not sure about SSD. I replaced my hard drive with a SSD last year and I can't say I noticed much of an improvement. Maybe a small one, but I'm not sure.

If you want to compare speeds, try starting a new game using the v5.2 TBL Rosters with the NHL on Standard and the UK on Enhanced. Then do a vaction sim until 10th April at the end of season 1. On mine, this takes about 19-20 minutes.

It has to be either CPU or SSD. Without knowing the back-end of it, those would be the biggest factors in most games (aside from GPU, which I doubt is a factor here).

I suppose I could try running EHM off a hard drive, then an SSD on my desktop and see what the difference in speed is.
