FYI - the editing efforts to do so that I'm aware of weren't geared towards just one player

It can't really be done...

I tried to keep Europeans/Russians in Europe/Russia with the 1974 database, with limited success. I actually gave up on trying to do so quite awhile ago, frustrated that even when I found editing methods to remove the NHL Release Clause European/Russian players were still signed away by NHL teams

Sometimes things seemed to work for some players for a little while…as I recall Attributes that were edited included Adaptability (minimum), Ambition (minimum), Loyalty (maximum) as well as Home/Current/World reputation (minimum) plus adding applicable Favourite Club/Staff and lengthening/improving contract

Primis has tried to keep Europeans/Russians in Europe/Russia too, even going to the point of “removing” the NHL (by giving it an Upper Age limit of 12) and found top players choose not play play rather than signing outside the NHL!

In the version I am working on right now, I moved Kovalchuk to SKA (3 year contract) and set his ambition very low and loyalty high. I started up a game as the Devils(who still has his rights) and he did not want to sign with me!

Did you offer the contract anyhow? I remember testers with the 1974 database saying the same thing but when they offered the contract anyhow the player still signed (though in the 1974 database I don't recall any European/Russian from Europe/Russia actually having NHL Rights already - that should stop other NHL teams from signing Kovalchuk!)

There's no way to keep Europeans at home as the game is hardcoded to have top players striving for the NHL. But when players are 28-29-30 or so they prefer playing at home. I'd say it's not too unrealistic, just the NHL is a bit overpowered in this facet of the game, after all the game is now 8 years old and a lot of things have changed since then.
The key for having them staying at home would be giving 'em a low world reputation, but this will work for the first few years only, after regens start appearing they will still do things like playing 10 straight years in the AHL and so on.

i really doubt this'll work, and it might have been mentioned before, but could you set the European players' NHL rights to belong to a defunct NHL team like Atlanta? but then even if this does work short term, once they expire i can't see what would stop them joining the NHL again like Alessandro's method, unless you keep resetting the rights with the saved game editor or something stupid like that...
