When watching the NHL awards in-game I remember how inconsistent that award is.
This year Steckel won it with a 6.56 rating and who finished second? A kid who played 16 games with MTL and spent the rest in Hamilton.
Brad Winchester won it last year and the year before John Scott finished second in the runner up.
I don't know how it works to pick the nominees for the trophy but a change is required I think. Seems like the game picks random players who have good defensive attributes despite their performances. And even there, John Scott with good attributes? hahaha
Completely agree with this one and I believe I even posted something about it some time back (no idea when that was though). As a Red Wings fan, I am probably biased but Kris Draper and Pavel Datsyuk should be at least nominated each season, and probably should win it at least half the time. Instead, I see completely random players winning the Selke trophy, much like the ones listed in this thread.
Yes there are only a handful of guys. But the pundits in the show are now starting to notice that you do not have to score a ton of points to get a shot at winning it. There are guys out there that play really solid D that do not score 30 goals. Guys like Dom Moore in his prime, Manny Malhotra. That type.
But yeah, like all awards there are few guys capable of winning it during any given season. Yet this season, they all seem to play for the LA Kings and Anaheim.

Other names that come to mind past and present are Halpern, Pahlsson, Draper, Rucchin... there aren't a ton of them in the league at any given time. Mike Peca was never a big scorer, but everyone knew he was shut-down and very effective.
I agree that there's too much emphasis on offensive output. Datsyuk is the exception IMO because he happens to be a big-time scorer who also just strips guys of the puck with frightening regularity (often leads the league in Takeaways). But the best guys are usually 3rd or 4th liners. The funny thing is EHM doesn't care about scoring, and it still comes up with weird candidates and winners.
He is not the only exception..Ryan Kesler, Zetterberg, Bergeron, Toews, Hossa. Lots of guys who score at high rates that are very solid defensively. Getzlaff is starting to get some love for his dzone side of the game as well (tho not at the elite level like the ones listed above). Patrick Marleau has become very solid defensively while still scoring.
It is no longer the third line checking centre or winger award. It is no longer the "shadow" award. But...there are some guys who are talking about taking it back to its roots....and rewarding the guys who work their asses off out there without scoring. The Vermette types (admittedly he is starting to score), The Fisher types. The Dustin Brown type.
But...those are few and far between..the best defensive players in the game now are still guys who score at a fairly elite level (And I guess Brown and Fisher especially could be put in that).
It is now more of a 1st line-2nd line hybrid player type of award. Both ends of the rink come into play.
It is certainly not a Nick Tarnasky...Dale Weise, Brian McGrattan type of award.
This issue though stems from the fact that SIZE matters in EHM so much. The big goony or part goony type guys get put on the PK all the time by the AI. And that results in them getting a better rating defensively in the game than they should. And that is why you see so many of them win the Selke award.
