So basically the kind of coaching a Canadian gets before age 10 ("hey! pass the puck! you can't skate through the whole team!") is what the Russians are lackingbatdad wrote:The one on whole team rush thing---that is coaching that they have never had.

Re: The IIHF World Championships 2016
A new year , a new WC.
SWE - LAT 2:1 OT
USA : CAN 1:5
Poor performance of the US guys . From the 2nd period , as a couple of sleeping pills . Also Kinkaid with some mistakes. Canada also again very strong. Probably even more upside potential. From Sweden I am very disappointed . But I am very happy for Latvia . With the one point they will be satisfied.

Catastrophic game of the Russian team .
I think we can already send the gold medal to Canada . I don't know who is going to stop this team?

Re: The IIHF World Championships 2016
USA just doesn't have the squad to hang with the top tier. When you look at the guys that USA wanted but had to sit out due to injury... you get the idea of just how lacking their options were aside from kids. Kinkaid also can stand on his head one minute, then let in a super-softie the next. Very erratic. I don't know how people thought USA would do anything at the tourney. Their vets are almost non-existant. If they can steal a medal of any color, it'd be a huge coup.djskek wrote:USA : CAN 1:5

Re: The IIHF World Championships 2016
Finland had a very slow start against Belarus but won 6-2. Kostitsyn brothers were the only real threat.. but nothing else really.
Our miracle boy Patrik Laine did 2+1 though; and was chosen as the best player of the game.
For him it's the final chance to go beyond Auston Matthews.
What I've seen the odds this WC it's CAN, RUS, FIN at the top.. no one else really close.

I suppose Laine might beat Matthews in draft after this championships. Depends who more need Toronto.

I'm pretty sure that the Leafs won't take this tournament's stats into consideration when deciding between the two. You never know, they could go with Laine but, in my opinion, not because of what both of these players will do in the World Championship.Named wrote:I suppose Laine might beat Matthews in draft after this championships. Re: The IIHF World Championships 2016
Team Kazakhstan surprisingly beat Team Switzerland 3-2 in shootout, it was their first victory in WC within 10 years (that of course because they haven't played in the actual Championships much). Switzerland's goalie Reto Berra let a shot in that came from the opponent's blue line, seems like he still has that tendency to let in easy shots. At the other end Kazakhstan's Vitali Kolesnik made 49 saves, playing like he was 10 years younger than he is.
More surprises came when Denmark beat Norway cleanly 0-3, Denmark's goalie Sebastian Dahm was excellent in that game. Now Team Latvia was close to beating Team Czech Republic but the game went into overtime. Eventually soon-to-be-called Czechia won 3-4 in shootout.

A point against both the Czechs and Swedes? Heck yeah!! Hope they keep this up and don't drop the ball against weaker opponents as they're used to doing..

I understand that having such goals is quite unusual, but did Savchenko's shot was a missile... he was caught a little bit off guard, but I think that this kind of shoots/goals are underrated by the public. They aren't even that rareForNever wrote: let in easy shots

Re: The IIHF World Championships 2016
Sure thing, the shot was great, but even if it was Ovechkin or Selänne shooting the puck from that far off it still should never be a goal from the goalie's point-of-view.Alessandro wrote:I understand that having such goals is quite unusual, but did Savchenko's shot was a missile... he was caught a little bit off guard, but I think that this kind of shoots/goals are underrated by the public. Kazakhstan is totally making a name of themself now when they're tied against Russia 3-3 after period 1! Hungary also managed to score a goal against Canada, it was a blistering shot by István Bartalis, the game is now 1-2 for Canada.
Of course Russia and Canada are controlling both games but it's the score that matters in the end.

Jagr held the record i WC for most points (5) by an 18 yo in the tournament.
Patrik Laine took it in two games (4+2) already.
Leading scorer also btw.
