Carolina Hurricanes - Fantasy Draft

Post by Wilma »

Random order, random team, this is where I end up.

First of all, I stupidly forgot to take a screenshot of my draft results. Anywho, I was very happy with it. Early - Mid round. I tried to draft a more offensively minded team, and obviously tried to go young and quick. This is the roster that resulted.

Gagne - Malkin - O'Sullivan
Michalek - J. Carter - Kotalik
Sutherby - Marchant - Hunter
Hagman - Bates - Tenkrat

Regehr - Morris
Tallinder - Klesla
Vaanenen - Morrisson

Raycroft
Hasek

I wasn't happy with my goaltending (waited too long on Nittymaki and Toivenen). My defense isn't stellar either (I'd hoped to land one of the big three: Bouwmeester, Phaneuf or Pitkanen a little later but didn't). However, my forwards I got extremely lucky with. I landed Malkin and Carter early, O'Sullivan lasted a lot longer than I thought he would, and I think I got some steals in Sutherby, Hunter and Kotalik.

As far as prospects go, I didn't load up with non-roster ones. Malkin and O'Sullivan are top notch, but I made sure to get some depth in goal with Montoya and Patzoid. Other than that, I managed to grab players like Dawes, Syvret and Thoresen and sign everyone's favourite, Grabovsky.

Carolina needed a little cleaing house as far as staff goes. Laviolette I like, and 3 of the scouts aren't bad. But they're not deep, out of the five total I had to cut two for their brutal stats. I filled the spots, but I'm still desperately looking for some foreigners for the role.

So, I go through the long process of training camp, confident that my team should atleast be in the hunt for the playoffs. I continue to try and land one of the big name young defensemen, but instead, managed to get Brind'Amour. Just so happens the Sharks were way over the cap, and I got him for some 1 * prospect. After that I managed to deal away Marchant to get myself another second round pick.

Now, I'm 22 games into the season. I've been using mostly the same lines, with Brind'Amour centering my third line. I've also used only the top three lines, keeping Bates and Hagman for some PK time. To my delight, the team has played brilliantly. The top line has clicked majorly. Malkin is first in league points, Gagne is second. O'Sullivan, while not getting many goals, is top 10 in assists. I've been getting very even secondary scoring after that (a lot from Brind'Amour) and decent shared goalie time from Hasek and Raycroft. The defense hasn't stepped up much. Great +/-, not many points. If anything, that's still where I'm looking to try and swing a deal.

My record is 16 - 5 - 1. First in the league.

In the AHL, my team is having no problems either. No one is dominating the scoring race (unlike what I usually have) but Grabovsky, Dawes and Thoresen have all been scoring plenty. Montoya has been getting almost all of the starts, and has a SV% above .930 and a GAA below 1.50. It's men with boys down there. Their record is 16 - 0 - 1.

So far, I'm pretty happy with how it's gone. Now time to try and steal myself a young defensemen, and then this franchise is really rolling.

Your defense looks really good actually, maybe its not that great right now, but in 2 seasons, you could easily have the best defense in the league.
