The Boston Globe -
"The directive came from center Marc Savard, who presumably would have righted his helmet if Lewis had sent him in as the third or fourth shooter, the likely scenario if the shootout had reached such lengths even though "Lewie didn't tell me," said Savard.
That made them even, because Savard didn't tell Lewis about his plot, either. He just figured it was time to do something; the heck with haute couture.
As the resident instigator on the team, Savard is an expert in such twists of logic.
He invented the rally helmet during his productive stay with the Atlanta Thrashers and brought it with him to Boston as a secret bonus after the Bruins landed him as a free agent during the summer.
Savard apparently held sway as a fashion designer in Atlanta as well. He concocted the rally helmet after the Thrashers had performed even more abysmally in shootouts than the Bruins had.
"We'd lost like seven in a row," recalled Savard before the Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 2-1, in overtime last night at TD Banknorth Garden.
So the helmets were reversed, and -- presto! -- a turnaround, so to speak, was launched.
"We won like our next seven in a row," said Savard, refusing to gloat about his invaluable contribution."
