Free Photoshop Alternative

Post by bruins72 »

I put this in the add-ons forum because I thought it might be of some use to the folks that make graphical add-ons for EHM. I found out about a free Photoshop alternative that looks to be pretty robust. I haven't had the chance to try it out yet but I'm downloading it now. It's called "Krita".

I've used gimp for a few months since I went back to designing stuff after using photoshop elements 7 a lot a few years ago, I'm downloading this as well :)

Or the real photoshop free trial. :-) Maybe it's a month? Or is it two weeks.. Used to be a month.

I know Photoshop CS2 was free (legally) a couple of years ago and I snapped it up so fast.

How does this Krita compare to GIMP, which is pretty much about the single most un-intuitive program I've ever used? :-) I'd love to hear some comparisons.

Thanks for the suggestion. I might check this out as it looks rather promising. It's a strange website though. I struggled to find any screenshots of what the application actually looks like!

I tend to use GIMP which is fine for basic stuff but, as Primis said, it's not very intuitive at all and it can be a real pain to do simple things (such as curved text). There's a major new version of GIMP coming out relatively soon but I think the improvements are more technical than anything else. I also have a free legal copy of Photoshop CS2 but for some reason I always forget I have it installed.

I've been using the free CS2 for quite a while now. I have had a chance to really try out Krita yet but plan on it tomorrow.

I'm interested in hearing how it works out. Having recently received a Wacom tablet, I've seen Krita mentioned quite a bit while looking for good art software.

I did notice that it was available for tablets. It's also available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

I powered it up this morning and poked around in it very briefly. From what I could see, it did everything that CS2 did. That being said, I'm not an advanced user. I use it in a very basic way. It didn't look like much of a learning curve for me. I'll use Krita on the next challenge announcement graphic I do and see how it goes.
