5th time was the charm, set the cup as the end point for this save to avoid it dragging on like the Jets one did. Ended up facing a fairly weak Toronto in the Finals and still needed 7 to beat them because their goalie was playing a solid 6% above his performance in the regular season as a rookie in the playoffs, seems legit.

What I learned from that little scout is that I'm pretty good at drafting guys with ~155-165 PA. Both goalies being exactly 160 is just uncanny. Alf Christian who i drafted 148th Overall was going to become a freaking superstar, Viljami Ruusunen who I picked up 44th overall is about as close to the perfect sniper as you're going to get. Slightly higher Consistency is all he was missing, but 20 Temp and 20 Off role with 163 PA means guaranteed 100-120 point scorer at his peak. The inclusion of Matejcek on the list might seem odd because of his lower PA. But he's got good enough everything to be the #4 guy on a budget when the Salary Cap gets tight. Victor Westerling was the only one that had already reached his PA. Everyone else still had anything from 10-70 left to gain. So I guess 4 drafts is how long it takes to build a future dynasty from having 0 players on contract (scouting really is way too exact in EHM). Probably looking at trying my hand at a journeyman save starting in the depths of obscure european hockey next. Also learned that the cutoff for being considered two-way as a defenceman isn't 10 defensive role like it is for forwards, it's actually 13 (of all the random non-even numbers to pick) because Mosey has 12 and is considered offensive, while Matejcek has 13 and is considered two-way. That does explain why I've had defencemen scouted as offensive still be quite capable defensively, since 12 is enough to be passable on defence.

I haven't played EHM much last week but I'm through my first training camp with the Pens. I've played 6 pre-season games to evaluate my team as best I can and I think we got something there. Not something worth a playoffs run but they definitely have more good prospects that I thought they had. So the rebuild might not be as long as I expected it to be. It's still gonna be tough though, even the pre-season ranking is putting us dead last again.

Since I decided to not sign any UFAs or do trading the team is REALLY young as alot of prospects are already playing with the team. Most of them even played last seasn. I've got 10 players in the line-up under 25 years old and 4 players at 27 years old.

Joe Sertich LD Despite his bad determination I'm seeing him as my futur #1 dman. I hope his development is not over!

Like I said when I took over the team my main goal was to get past the post Crosby era. At least with Brooks and Sertich I seem to have a good duo to start with. I also have 2 prospects in the AHL that are wingers that I hope will be good. With this I could at least have a futur 1st line maybe.

In the net it's something else though. I currently have 2 "okay" goalies but not starter material. First of all we have Zachary Sawchenko who is 26 years old and he was their starter last year and will be mine by default this year too. He has alot of green but "backup goalie green" if I can say so. Next we have Micke Anttila who is 23 years old. IMO his left column is started material but his right column is well, horrible material. He was horrible last season and I can understand why. So getting a good goalie will be one of my urgent priorities as they don't have any in their prospects pool.

So like I said I don't plan on making the playoffs and I sure hope we can finish in the bottom 5 so I can draft well again. At least the past AI has drafted better than I expected so it's going to help me a bit. I also dismantled my nine-o/Shindigs tactics to be sure I'm not going to get some extra wins because of those tactics. Anyway the team is too young to try those tactics and I prefer my players to be a bit older to implement that. My first season is going to be an "observation" one.

I've set some rules though to make things a bit harder because only via UFA I could easily rebuild the team since the AI is letting go tons of good players each year. No UFAs signing, I can try to steal some RFA under 25 years old and trading is allowed but only for picks or 25 years old players or less. I can trade out whoever I want though except Crosby right now, as I want him to retire with me.

This is the best of my UFA signings. Actually pretty good. In his 4 High School years he has been amazing and in the Tier1 Elite Hockey League he has been good too. He will face fierce competition now that he is being educated at the college. I will probably give him even line1 duties on the right wing. Let's see how he can cope with the pressure, he has somehow to replace the superstar Gary Ammon

Season preview lists us as 5th which is a lot better than i expected. The board again wants us to reach the playoffs. We will see it may be possible.

Bronson Levesque is rated 8th best goalie of the league
Tommy Maisonneuve is rated as the leagues 4th best left wing
Ivan Morozov is rated as the leagues 9th best left wing
Conor Beck (4th) and Ashley Lafrenière (5th) are among the best centres of the league

No defender and no right wing made it into the top 10

Tommy Maisonneuve is undrafted but i have seen scouts of the New York Rangers getting some close looks on him during the preseason.

Was looking at starting a journeyman save starting at Slough Jets in the NIHL S2 in Britain and working my way to the NHL eventually. We got 3 games into the regular season (which is quite a long time because they only have 30ish games per season), and because it's at semi-pro/amateur level and I disciplined my captain for poor performance once in the pre-season. He just quit without any chance for me to respond or do anything after having made him the flipping captain, us winning all 3 games and him having 11 points in 3 games with our system (about 1½ month after I disciplined him too). Why does every single AI entity in this game have to act like an angsty teenager? Does Riz really think everyone in hockey is that immature? It's just so dumb. I guess I'll have to find another save to do, because I'm not dealing with that level of BS.

I'll go for a pentagon challenge I think. I'll start in the EIHL in Britain (because it's a fun league that's never scouted so your prospects are fairly safe from being drafted, comparably) and go for a CHL win from there. After that I'll hope to get job offers from either the CHL (see this is why the Champion's Hockey League is literally the dumbest name they could have picked for that god forsaken league), ECHL or the AHL and win the Memorial/Kelly/Calder, and finally a Stanley Cup is the end goal. That should make for a solid Pentagon Challenge. I might actually want to record that, but the interest for EHM videos seems to be non-existent. So these little journal updates will do.

Newyear again - season is going better than expected. Vermount currently is sitting on a 3rd place with 28 points. The 1st Connecticut Huskies are at 32 points and they hired a former NHL Head Coach to do their job in autumn. The 5th Massachusetts is at 26 points. So everything is pretty tight this season.

We don't have a topscorer this season, our best Ashley Lafreniere is 19th in the league (15 points in 16 games). But we have 7 players in the top 35 scorers of the league. Our whole team is scoring good. And Bronson Levesque despite not getting any obvious ability upped his play from 85% saves to 89.5 %. I have two explanations - he has a year more experience in the NCAA now and he has a lot better defenders in front of him.

Several players are on their last college year and we will miss them. Hayes our best defensive defender, Maisonneuve and Morozov two great wingers. Conor Beck one of our top centers. Ahnelöv is not seeing much playing time in his last season as we got several very good RW (Arnold - 15 points, Ashton 13 points, McRae 11 points). Another european will join our college next season though. Andrei Yatsenko who is in his third season with Yaroslvl in the MHL. He is technical okay and has not so good physicals.

What happened two former star players of the Catamounts? A little observation:

Ross Colton
Tampa sent him in the AHL where he scored 105 points in 151 games. He then moved to europe where he is in his 3rd season with Tampereen Ilves 58 points in 83 games there currently. Nothing amazing.

Craig Puffer
the surprise man ... he has only been one season on my first line despite being 3 seasons with me. He played 61 NHL games so far 23 with the Sharks and this season is his first with the Blues. 23 NHL points isn't too shabby. In the AHL he played 188 games and scored 129 points.

Jacob Pivonka
After his college career he played one season in the Czech Republic. With Mlada Boleslav he scored 18 points in 42 games. This season he moved to the AHL where he scored 7 points in 34 games with St. John's IceCaps. Not a great career at all.

Maxim Zhukov
After his college career he went back to russia where he played as 3rd stringer in the VHL only playing one game. He then went for this season a league down to the Peraya League team HK Rostov. Here he is the starter and registered 19 wins in 24 games this season with a save percentage of 93.3 %

Grant Silianoff
He has been sent down to the AHL by the Canucks after they ripped them of me. 80 points in 107 games with the Utica comets is very good.

Gary Ammon
Surprisingly he has not yet been sent down by the Penguins and so he is my 2nd NHL player. He is playing on the 4th line of the Penguins and recorded 11 poins int 34 games so far. Their first line is Nylander - Crosby - Kessel.

Yeah, I get low professionalism players leaving. But this was our Captain who had high professionalism. Also why did he wait for over a month and then just up and leave without there being any way for me to react? In a similar situation in FM you can at least talk to your player and try to smooth it over. The fact you have no way of interacting with the issue here is what annoys me. I think I should probably just stop using the discipline mechanic, it's broken powerful in professional leagues and a huge risk in semi-pro/am leagues. So just not something that should really be used, I'm honestly surprised it's not banned in the Challenge rules (as far as I could see).

The reason for that is actually a quite big issue with the AI's ability to cap manage and evaluate talent. They very often either have no cap space to sign their prospects on bridge deals or simply think they are asking for too much money. So they let the prospects sit as RFA until the prospects get so desperate they "settle" for a KHL/DHL/SHL/Liiga team. Since players with rights owned by the AI won't file for salary arbitration and the AI never gives out Offer Sheets they end up in no mans land and are forced to go to Europe. It's not uncommon for a team to have two AHL level goalies and being a bottom team in the NHL a few seasons in while having a superstar level goalie which they own the rights to sit in the KHL for their entire career because the AI can't cap manage at all. In those two cases at least they signed them back quickly. I've had Top 5 Overall picks play in the KHL until they are 30+ before their NHL team finally has the cap space to sign them. It's part of why the NHL gets easier as you get further into a save. The AI keeps shooting itself in the foot until it has no legs left to stand on, and then you just win everything by default.

Well that's not something to say so clearly. I am pretty sure for some people the KHL has definetly a higher reputation than the AHL. For others it would be vice-versa. But players like Nolan Patrick not getting a contract for a whole season is definetly a problem

Based on history thus far, among the top talent from NA, there is a 0% chance they'll play in the KHL, and that's what I was referring to (that's why I said "young/top NA players" and not all players) - in a simulation of the current IRL hockey world players like Nolan Patrick should never miss a season and they should never go to the KHL

The non-Russian players I see in the KHL, especially the NA players, are AHL players (or 3rd/4th liners and 3rd pairing defensemen at best); for the Top/Very Good players, except for a handful or two of Russians doing it for part of their career, no other Top/Very Good players have ever played in the KHL - the KHL is not a "draw" for the Top/Very Good players (and it's not at all a draw to the young Top/Very Good players).....it's never happened, and not happening now, and there's no sign it ever will happen

The KHL is contracting and reducing salaries (year-after-year too), so it's less of a draw than it was to even Russian players

I wonder if it would be better to have the salary ranges set-up differently...would the Top/Very Good players still choose these other Leagues as often?

Looking at the 2016-17 TBL Rosters...
The NHL has maximum F/D/G salary amounts as 15 million/13.5 million/12.75 million
The KHL has a maximum F/D/G salary amounts as 11 million/9.9 million/9.35 million

The NHL numbers make some sense to me, as the contract value information is easily available and can be checked.

(with the 7 players given a higher salary)

At the moment, the average salary in the KHL is 2.6 times greater than in European leagues. Upon reaching certain targets, this ratio will decrease to 2.3, but would not leave us at risk of a mass exodus of players." Seems to me like the average KHL salary is looking like it will be around the NHL minimum...

I find it weird that you can reduce the salaries of many hundreds of players by 43% but that only reduces the "advantage" from 2.6 to 2.3 (something doesn't seem right about that math to me...or the overpayment on those top 40 players is incredibly high)

The KHL IRL the soft cap for this upcoming year is 16 million, and the KHL is heading towards a strict Salary Cap of 10.5 million US http://en.khl.ru/news/2017/05/25/347812.html (with two "exceptions"); in EHM the maximum team budgets in the KHL are set in the 2016-17 Rosters at 30 million (seems high to me, especially if all teams rise up to the maximum, which seems to happen in EHM.....I'm also not sure why the KHL doesn't have a Salary Cap in EHM, as while it's not the same as the NHL's they still do have restrictions/guidelines but in game it's much more "wide open" and the higher budgets and salary ranges may be affecting things - would the Top/Very Good players still choose these other Leagues as often if settings were adjusted?)

About the salary there is another issue i guess. and that's the currency. 2009 to 2014 you got betwenn 27.5 and 35 rubel for one $. 2016 you got up to 80 rubel for one $ and at the moment you get around 59 rubel. So if the paycheck is paid in RUB the salary converted to $ can change a lot in a small timeframe almost 1:3 from 2014 to 2016.

Well this is not exactly the topic of this thread. I am 4th now two games to go with as much points as the 5th and 1 point ahead of the 6th.
