What I usually do is start with one of the defaults, like physical offensive or something and then tweek from there. Take a look at what type of team you have, i.e. fast and offensive? big and physical grinders? a mix of both? Scouting your own team can help you out there.
From there I boil it down to two general tactics that I save and switch between - an Offensive tactic and a Defensive tactic. Then I look at who I'm playing and what I think will work best against them. During the game I might tweek something here and there, but my two general tactics are good starting points.
Once you get more into it, start tweeking the players personal tactics. The TBL Guide is a good help there and good info to get you started.
That being said, I know some people just say phooey to the who coaching part, since that's why you hire a Head Coach. There's no shame in letting your coach take over. Just make sure you have a good coach for the team you build. If your coach likes a flashy offensive style, make sure your team is a flashy team - or get a new coach.

The only thing I changed was the breakouts , and neutral zone offense. I kept my top 2 lines using the more finesse plays, and my checking and lower skill lines using the more basic or defensive plays.noctambulist wrote:I'm curious, when you change tactics every game in the playoffs, do you change it completely like from finesse offensive to neutral zone trap? Or is it more just tweeking a few things here and there?

Get a set of tactics that suit your team well, then make another one with a couple of adjustments, usually to the breakouts and offencive systems, but not the sliders. This will make you that little bit more unpredictable, which really helps for interfivisional games and playoffs series, when your playing the same team 7-8 times.
I did play with one set of tactics at one point, but when I got the Flyers in the playoffs and I'd already played them 8 times, they built their tactics against me and beat me by 4 or 5 goals each game, even though I'd got the better of the regular season. Thats how useful a second tactics is. remeber, only a couple of smaller changes, otherwise you'll end up playing against your strengths and to your weaknesses!
