Game crashing at "Creating Shortlists" / "Initialising Game Data" stage of new game start-up

So after a bit more testing, it appears the game is not reading the extra_config file at all; however, by changing the name of the file (I changed it to roma_config) the game starts up just fine. But, the changes in the file are not reflected in the game (i.e, contract extensions).

Regarding this issue...I just took a very quick look at the extra_config file and noticed players (see below) with a July 31st 2018 Future Transfer date.

So I started up a game with 11.2 with the extra_config file and the database both in the folder (so normally it would crash),
but I started the game with the early start date of July 2nd (i.e. before the occurrence of the future transfers noted above) - the game started up fine with no crash! I checked on Corey Perry's injury status and on who owned Ottawa's 2019 first round pick in the database, and both showed that the extra_config was working properly.


I changed 2018 to 2019 for the transfers below, and tried starting a game without changing the start date...and got a crash

I deleted these three transfers and then started a new game with 11.2 and I used the default August 13th start date & the game started up fine, no crash!
I checked again for Perry's injury/Colorado having Ottawa's pick, and the extra_config file was functioning as intended

I've discovered the error. It is specifically related to the early state date option, which means there is a line somewhere in the file that is causing the game to crash at the shortlists point of creation. This is probably a date that is prior to the early start date, perhaps the transfers as Archi mentioned above.

Scratch that. I'm having the same issue again. I really have no idea what's going on with this database.

I have the same crashing issue during the shortlist creation. Nothing would load at all, with or without leagues, retention etc.

I went on Steam and spotted a post saying someone got it to work by minimizing during the setup load, and I tried that and its worked for me both with all leagues, full database and other issues, this was on the directly downloaded steam workshop database..

I managed to fix the creating shortlist database startup crash by removing the UK Player retirements and the Arena expansion for Karlskrona from the extra_config file.
Not sure which of the two removals did it:

My money is on the UK Retirements.

Once these were removed, it worked fine no matter what I selected.

I posted this on HFBoards but figured I'd post it here too as it comes up relatively often: Unfortunately it seems to be down to EHM being a bit unstable with the extra_config file when creating a new game. The file has grown massively in size thanks to greater work/research on the rosters. It also seems that having a 31st team in the NHL has also contributed to instability with the extra_config file. Stability should hopefully be improved in v1.5...

There are a few things that can be done to improve stability however:

1) Place the database directly in your EHM installation folder (i.e. copy the database.db and cfg. files from the Steam Workshop folder) <EHM installation folder>\data\database\<new sub-folder>\. We have found that the extra_config and record_config files are generally more stable when the database is in your EHM installation folder rather than the Steam Workshop folder. These threads will help: (a) How to locate the EHM installation folder and (b) How to locate the Steam Workshop rosters.

2) Make sure you don't alt+tab from EHM whilst the new game is being created. It might appear to freeze on the "Creating Shortlists" part, but just leave it a minute or so and it should progress okay.

3) As a last resort, try removing the records_config.cfg and extra_config.cfg files from your database folder. This should solve the problem but you'll obviously miss out on various arena moves, draft pick switches, etc.

I am only using a handful of leagues, most of them with 'View Only' not 'Enhanced' detail.

I've copied the workshops content to the database folder directly and selected that database.

I've tried removing all other workshop contents... unsubscribing then re-subscribing.

I've tried completely uninstalling and deleting all EHM files and then re-installing.

I've tried with extra players and without.

I've tried removing the 'extra_config' file from the folder.

Nothing works... this is frustrating as it would be a really fun game to play during the coronavirus quarantine.

I usually need to start my save 4 or 5 times before it works.
Don't remove your contents, just try a few times.

That's the only tip I can give you.
