Freeware EHM.

Prior to the development of Eastside Hockey Manager by SI Games, the game was a one-man freeware project by Risto Remes. This forum is the place to discuss any aspects relating to the freeware edition.

Try redownloading it then, you could have gotten a corrupted download. I haven't seen any other complaints from people. I'm also assuming you're on PC (there is no Mac freeware version).

FHockey is the only place you can get the freeware version at this point and time.

I am a seasoned EHM player of the newer versions. Started playing with EHM 2005 when it was first released, then transitioned to EHM07 and played that for nearly 10 years before EHM1 came out, which I am dabbling with now.

I never played EHM freeware before, but downloaded it today and am finding it very interesting and a nice change of pace. Are there any tips, tricks, mods, rosters, etc. that anyone can offer me? Sometimes I am finding old games are easier and more fun to play.

We have all the files transitioned over from Fhockey.com onto the site here: http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/vi ... .php?f=133

I'd make sure you have the EXE's for 1.15, 1.16, and 1.18, all three of them, as all 3 have their uses. Also PlayerScout is the "cheating" utility -- you can't edit players with it, but you can see their attributes, POT, and CON, etc. The max amount of players in the database (which is merely a plaintext file called PLAYERS.EHM) is only 3500.

Use v1.15 to start games, and also at the "rollover" date (when it jumps from 6/29 to 8/29, which is when contracts go to the next year and the next year's draft class is created) because 1.15 generally is accepted to generate the best draft classes (although 1.16 isn't bad either, 1.18 generates terrible drafts though through an Enforcer Bug).

If you use Hokay's newest rosters, you'll need to use v1.18 though at the start because of a glitch that causes a crash that we still can't figure out yet,

Player development is much easier than in the newer versions. If you wanted, you could literally ice a team of 17 and 18 year olds at the NHL level and as long as their POT (Potential) and CON (Consistency) are good enough, and they get ice time, they'll develop fairly rapidly regardless of much else.

There is no salary cap (nor any way to implement one in-game). There is no way to re-align the NHL, or add expansion teams. Trading can never really be made hard enough, and is wonkier than the newer EHM's. But not truly awful or anything. Almost all international games tend to end with a 3-6 or 6-3 score. Passive Box is the got-to PK tactic. Hit & Grind is a bit overpowered offensive tactic (online freeware leagues used to ban or greatly limit its use) so most people try not to use it or else it sucks some of the fun out of the game. You cannot trade an asset for cash straight up, something else (pick or player) needs to be included with any trade.

I personally still like the freeware version because you can absolutely BLOW through a season quickly in it if you don't ever coach in-game. I used to get through like 2 or 3 seasons a night back in the day, without coaching games myself and just simming and managing.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to start a new thread on here and ask. I've been playing the freeware since 2001, and to be honest I don't even really think about stuff with it much anymore, I just.... do it. If that makes sense. It's just trained/ingrained in me at this point. So I maybe have missed some weird things or other oddities just because I take it all for granted. And I think there are still a few others kicking around here who are very much vets of the freeware as well.

Thank you for the great information Primis. I will look all of this over and mess around with it for awhile. One question right now though: how do you change from one exe to another and back again (1.5 ---->1.8)?

You have to Save, and then close the program and reopen it using a different .EXE. Basically you install the full installer package, and then plop the extra .EXE files into the same directory (with the .EXE's all labelled with their version so you can tell them apart). I put separate shortcuts on my desktop pointing to v1.15,v1.16, and v1.18

So for instance at the 6/29 date in-game, you'd save your game, close the program. Then open the v1.15 .EXE file, load your savegame, Sim the day so that 6/29 rolls over to 8/29, check n the draft class in-game to make sure nothing wonky happened (things like making sure 8 of the top 10 CSB aren't enforcers or something, that stuff *can* happen, but it pretty rare). Save your game again, close the program, and then reopen v1.16 or whichever one you prefer to sim with (there's nothing wrong with 1.18's results, but v1.18 sims MUCH slower than 1.16). And then sim your season.

I will also say this: there are unofficial .EXE files that most of us used that removed the waiver draft entirely after it was taken out of the CBA. I have those versions, and that's the only thing modified on them. But I don't believe those versions are available on the site here yet. I'll have to see if I can get them uploaded, they are about the only modified .EXE's I would use (they've had years and years of use including by online leagues, and are legit).

Hey guys,

I still love the freeware version and I'm about to give a go once again.

Question about the versions:
Is the v1.18 fully usable?
If I dont wanna change between versions, is the game fully usable by v1.18? (I use Windows 10 Pro)

Hope some of you still read these freeware topics.

Version 1.18 is absoluetly fine in single player mode.
If you use it in a league it can be a little slow simming each game.

Reuploaded them here. https://archive.org/details/ehm-freeware-all-files

I'm not really sure if this is site protocol, but I figure I'll at least keep them up as long as the main link is down.

I'll upload a copy to our OneDrive account too, so that we can hopefully keep a copy of this alive.
