Olympics

Post by keithv »

Somewhere in 2008/2009 Hockey Canada was looking for a new GM so I figured I give it a whirl. Vancouver 2010 rolls around and I still have the job. Outside of a close round robin game vs the USA I smoked everyone to win gold.

Anyone else coach at the Olympics?

In EHM 2005, I get the chance to coach Olympic. "Lose" the Silver. But smashed Russians at World Cup, World Championship, won Lotto and Deutshland many times. Hockey Canada sacked me for my "loyal services" :p

I think USA and Canada "sack" you no matter what after one (sometimes a few) tournaments, as they only hire managers at a tournament basis.

Many of the other nations are very unforgiven though. You can theoretically stay manager of all european nations for ever, but nations like Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic and Finland will generally sack you if you don't make it to at least the semi-finals at the World Championships or Olympics.

At the B-level it is a bit the same. I have for example noticed, that Denmark U20s will sack their manager allmost everytime if they do not get promoted to the A-Group.

In 2005, its a one year mandate, beginning with deutshland cup (I think) ending with the world championship. I get rehired 2 or 3 times, but AFTER the olympics I got sacked, and next autumn I was coaching USA :p

USA and Canada only hire till the end of one of the following competitions: World Championships, World Cup, Olympic Games.

In fact, you're not sacked, it's just that you are hired for a limited amount of time, with a precise competition for objective. Once this competition ends, your contract does the same, no matter the results you had.

Of course, if you did well, it will be easier to be re-hired :D

In EHM 2007 in my CBJ game I was waiting to be given the opp to manage Canada for the 2010 Olympics. It never came. The reason: John Fergie Jr had the job for the 2009 Worlds, the 2009 Deutschland Cup....and was retained for the Olympics..Once he won the gold there, he was finished as Canada GM and the position was made available. So with the Olympic exception it is a per tournament basis. But for 2010 it appears that the GM is hired for the 2009 Worlds. I have no idea if they get let go if they lose at the 2009 Worlds cause Canada always wins!
