Just curious if anyone has had any success in the game while allowing the Head Coach to coach the games and set the tactics?
Everytime I try to rely on the Head Coach to come up with the game plans, I fail to make the playoffs and have a below .500 season. Is this because I'm putting together terrible teams, that my coaches suck, or is it just really difficult to win if you don't coach yourself?

I know that you first off really need just good players, but if you also grab players who aren't the greatest at their position, but have great potential, then that is where coaching can come in. If you get a few players who have tons of potential and have the right coaches who can suit them well, then trust me... they'll shine for you.
But overall, coaching does have something to do with it. Signing a good head coach is very needed, but when you are looking at assistants, just go for those that can coach forwards well, goaltenders, or defensemen. You don't have to have each assistant good in each area, I got 2 coaches who coach goaltenders at about a 18 on their rating. Then I got 2 for the defensemen who are rated around 15 and then I finally got 2 other coaches who can coach my forwards with the average rating of about 17. So all in all, I got a good coaching staff. I have a .700 winning percentage in my first 4 years of play with my team and I believe some of that is do to coaching and the players that I signed.

I've had great success without coaching, and it's the only way I play(haven't coached a single game in EHM2007). I'll admit I have no championships to show for it, but that's not because I'm not coaching - it's because the game still insists on injuring some of my best players right before the playoffs. I know that's the reason, too, because my teams often do well throughout the whole season, and then about 1-3 weeks before the playoffs, my top players start going down one by one with big injuries... at which point my teams' success coincidentally pulls a 180.Just curious if anyone has had any success in the game while allowing the Head Coach to coach the games and set the tactics?
So, in the end - yes, I have had plenty of success when using coaches.
