This Month's Ed Belfour Award

Post by Minstrel »

Goes to Ottawa's Ray Emery! =D> Emery earned his first mention for the non-sportsmanship anti-honor when slashing Maxim Laperriere in the face with his goal stick on Saturday.

Along with his Belfour Award Emery also was given a three game suspension by the league. Congratulations Ray :-p

Emery had this coming. The guy is clearly a hothead. I think the suspension should have been at least 5 games. Of course, I'm a little biased because it was a Habs player that took the shot, but it was pretty brutal.

Emery looks like even more of a psycho since Maxim was pushed into Emery by an Ottawa player in the first place.

Cheers and go Habs! :canada:

Emery is a pure bread nut job of a goalie. 3 games is not enough. No way, no how. But not shocking that is all he got considering some of the non-suspensions and non fines this season. Cannot have that in the media all day every day you know. Bad for the image. And nothing is more glowing than the NHL. Ask the Count.

I'm expecting Fredrik Norrena to get the award next month. I could almost bet on it.

My only question is: IS Belfour eligible for this award? Cause if he is I would bet against anyone betting on Norrena. :-D

So Emery in his first game back gets into a brawl and throws a beatdown on Martin Biron and then wants to go again and ends up fighting with Peters :-o He really is a psychopath. And I'm sure the coaches and GM love to see him out ther throwing wild punches so he'll mash his hands and not be able to play goal... I wonder if he'll get suspended again. (video link in the NHL thread)

Double post now that I watched it again. Emery backs off, and gets up...Biron throws another punch at Emery...so yeah Emery wanted to go again.

Then Peters comes in to the scene...and goes at Emery...If anyone should be suspended it is Peters. Yeah Emery has a bad rap and probably should not have got involved, but really he just had a scrap.

I think in this case it has to go to Lindy Ruff!!!

Think it wasnt a cheapshot from Chis Neal to Drury. Drury was just caught out of guard. Hey, it wasnt even a charge!!!

But then Ruff went on with the tough guys when the Sens went with their first line and it was obvious that the Sabres were looking for some fights (just look how Peters and Mair went after Heatley and Spezza!!!).

We all know that Emery is crazy, but in this case I think he did the right thing!!!

Blame it on Ruff!!!

ACtually the hit Neil put on Drury reminded me of one that caused a major incident in Vancouver that shall remain nameless. It was borderline clean, borderline nasty. Definitely something any team, any one is going to react to at least the way the Sabres did. I have no issue with that. I am glad the Sabres reacted that way. It is hockey! Now...Saturday' sgame in Ottawa...Guess what? NOTHING WILL HAPPEN!

I have also no issue with Emery's role. So what, he had some fun!

Ruff vs Murray is hilarious!!! I love the call on that..THEY USED TO WORK TOGETHER>0 MURRAY IS PROBABLY SAYING "I GAVE YOU YOUR FIRST JOB!!!"

Has anyone else heard Generat (buffalo announcer) call of this. It is way better than the call on the TV (You tube) broadcast. He is supposed to be a homer, but totally calls out Peters for going to Emery...and gives Emery great credit for knowing to cover up. Did the TV guys even know that Peters is a tough guy? They made it sound like Emery could kill him. Which maybe, just maybe he could.

I watched the hockey-fights.com version with the call you're talking about. I laughed out loud at the first job comment as well.

Also, the guy between the benches (Buffalo TV personality?) looks hilarious, I kept waiting for an annoucer's mic to fall from the ceiling and him to start introducing the fighters. Either that, or drop a load in his pants - he looked like he could go either way. =D>

Brilliant fight all around - THAT'S hockey right there kids.

Cheers.

You don't know who the guy between the benches was? His name is ROB RAY! Former Sabre goon. He looks hilarious because he really wanted the mike and get into the scraps I am betting! It must have been hard for him to be right there since Ruff was one of his coaches.

Yeah, what was up with those guys?

I'll quote them for you.

A: You've gotta love this. Is there anything better...is there anything better?
This wasn't a good one, but a good goaltending fight. My heavens...
B: Well, it wasn't good for Martin Biron..
A: Nooo, and it wasn't a good fight period.

Edit: Woohoo, 500th post. Now I'm a checking liner. :D

This month's winner is.... *drumroll please!*

ED BELFOUR!! =D>

What a great influence for a young team Mr. Belfour is. Add Florida to the list of places Eddie has been arrested for being drunk and disorderly as well as resisiting arrest. :-o

Congrats Eddie, we knew you could set these amateurs straight and really show 'em how it's done :-p

What a loser...

Thanks to Kekkonen for the link from Miami and eme for the nomination in this thread

Our local paper ran a great photo of Belfour and Ville walking out of the lockup - Belfour looks like hell and is wearing a half un-buttoned Hawaiian shirt. He is literally walking example of pure class.

Yes, way to go Eddie! =D>

This incident is also proof of Eddie's great leadership skills. Ville Peltonen, who was also arrested in the same time and place, is known over here as an all-around good guy and every mother's dream son-in-law. It's now been one season with Eddie, and here we are: No more Mr. Nice Guy.

Hey, it's leadership, even if you're leading the wrong way...

There's a story about the incident in The Miami Herald.

Apparently they had to use a tazer gun on Eddie to get him handcuffed. Further down the same story, there's this:
Belfour and Peltonen are unrestricted free agents after spending this past season -- their first -- with the Panthers. In the coming weeks, the Panthers were expected to offer both contracts for next season.
Offer contract to both? I can understand Peltonen, if he comes cheap, but re-signing Belfour for yet another season? What on Earth are they thinking?

I think that's a new one for Eddie, I'm pretty sure they had to use mace on him in his Dallas hotel disorderly/resisting incident. He continues to break new ground. :-D

If Eddie himself hadn't already snatched up this month's award, I'd nominate Jamie McLennan for his vicious two-handed slash on Johan Franzen in game #5 of the Detroit - Calgary series. The following two things make McLennan's effort especially noteworthy:

1. He accomplished the feat after first hacking his way into a 2-minute penalty, which was delayed; the slash itself took place after the play was already whistled dead.

2. He entered the game in the middle of the 3rd period, and wasted only 18 seconds of game time before the act.

Edited to remove unintentional self-quote. Duh... I really need to learn to differentiate between the 'quote' and the 'edit' button. I think they're the other way around in most other boards I visit frequently.
