Buying a AHL/ECHL/CHL/UHL player as a european team?
Has anyone ever managed to buy a AHL/ECHL/CHL/UHL player as a european team?
It seems possible, as the option is available. I have done it the other way around (buying a european player as a AHL team), but when trying to buy a AHL player, I have no idea what to offer, as there is no asking price like there is for european based players.
I am not talking about bringing free agents to Europe, but actually buying a player that is contracted to a AHL team.

I think it is possible IRL...and during the season...Andrew Battaglia? Although his ECHL team may have released him, and was then picked up by Calv's favorite team.
Not done very often, because AHL, ECHL teams really don't play the game the same way as Euro leagues. Unles they are completely in financial ruin.

I'm not sure about this one. I reckon, although I have no proof, that if a European team wanted a player in the N/A leagues they would probably phone up the team, declare their interest and offer a fee. Then they would watch as the player they were after was 'released' to free agency for them to snap up. This is probably the way to bend the rules, and plenty of that probably goes on.
In the UK, the EIHL has a salary cap that is a gentlemen's agreement, not a league rule, between the teams. To get round this the richer teams obey the cap but give top players bonuses. According to some people, Nottingham Panthers even have one of their players (Corey Neilson) employed as a gym assistant so they can pay him more without breaking the cap. European hockey, especially British, can be quite dodgy.

Look at Brian Felsner. He left Port Huron during the '05-'06 season to play with Brynäs.Shadd666 wrote:OkayBut players can't move during the season right? (international transfer window...)

Here are some examples of where NHL contracted players actually run off to European leagues...
1. Brad Moran - He was contracted by the Canucks this season and only played 2 games and spent the rest of his time in the minors. Signed before he became a free agent right after the Moose were eliminated by some team in Europe.
2. Brandon Reid - Same situation and Moran.
3. Marc Chouinard? - It has been rumoured that whether or not the Canucks buy him out or not that he'll be headed over to Europe next season after being demoted to the minors.
4. Chubarov - He was still contracted by the Canucks this and last year while playing in Russia.
5. Kiril Koltsov - He ran off to Russia halfway through the season with Manitoba while contracted.
6. Envir Lisin - Refused to be demoted to the farm team by the Coyotes, ran off to Russia.
7. Kaigadarov - Ran off to Russia after not playing much with the Sens.
etc...
So it is possible in real life for players to head over to Europe while in an NHL contract. However, it takes a while (internation transfer window) for European players to come over to the NHL.

Chubarov, Koltsov do not have contracts with the Canucks. The Canucks own their rights...but not signed to a contract. 2 years ago Koltsov asked for his release (as did Lisin this season) and left to go back to the mother land. Kaigodorov never signed I believe. He may have, but it was agreed with the Sens he would go back to Russia if he did not make Ottawa, before he even came over.
Moran and Reid-Contracts with the Canucks had expired...so were not ""bought" buy European teams. If Chouinard is not bought out by Vancouver, he will not be going anywhere in Europe...cause the Canucks have him under contract for `1 more year...If the nucks have to pay him, they take the hit, and he plays for the Moose or not at all.
So unfortunately, not one of those expamples jdhog, is actually proof of a real life player being bought during a contract in a North American league by a European team.

laskey16 seems to have done it.batdad wrote:Okay..so back to topic...
IN EHM has anyone had success buying a player under contract to a North American pro team and having him move to Europe? During a contract...not after it expired, and not when not signed to any NA team? Anyone?
The problem is, that you can't see the asking price (like with european based players), so you have to guess what they wan't for the player.
