No doubt Horton is not as much of a risk as Hartnell..that is clear.
Yeah, I think the Horton deal will be okay...but even so, doing this is dangerous for salaries in general. Players of all ilks will compare themselves to Hartnell and ask for that kind of money. I am thinking for example of Jason Pomminville, Thomas Vanek...guys of similar age with talent. Now...you start signing all of these guys to $4mill contracts for 6 years...and the cap needs to go up alot...and then you end up with HAVE and HAVE NOT teams...something the cap was designed to protect against. If the cap gets too high....some teams won't be able to spend to it, and others..we already know who...can. And then we are back in the same boat.
Guys got to stop spending $ so much or we end up with rubbish bottom end players on rosters...and end up with rubbish trap all over again

Sure the Horton deal is less risky than Hartnell's one
Anyhow, it's the general philosophy that i dislike. Sure, it can work well with a few guys like Horton, but i'm afraid it becomes the norm while it shouldn't.
Pay the guys what they deserve, not what they're supposed to deserve in a few years! Else, the Pens will never survive financially

Is it me, or is the salary cap pointless, correct me if im wrong, but the cap has been raised this year.
Players are being overpayed, and they are being overpayed due to the fact that the cap has increased and that teams are stupid enough to sign people like yashin and cullimore and horton for HUGE amounts of money. $4 million dollars a year for a 22 year old is insane! and yashin is the highest paid in the league, (i think
) for someone that scores just 50 points in 58 games, good move to get rid of him, but very expensive.
glad to see that giggy has resigned tho, another good run to follow, hopefully.

well done burkey

Getzlaf-Yashin and Cullimore have no contracts anymore. They were both bought out by their teams (Isles and Habs). Now they are not going to be paid again until they sign with someone else at remarkably reduced rates.
Cap may be raised. Not sure where. Some say $52 some say $48 mill.
It is not why players are getting more $...it is in spite of it that players are getting so much money.
Rumor mill from our reliable 1040 radio:
1. Eric Duhatcek in Globe and Mail says Canucks offering Ryan Kesler and the 25th overall pick to Philly for the 2nd overall pick. Flyers can have the overpaid one, and Canucks would pick Turris. Great move for the Nucks. Flyers....not so much.
2. Chicago may move the #1 pick to Buffalo for Thomas Vanek and another player. No idea who that player is....but he would have to be a good one I think. Derek Roy comes to mind down the middle as that is where Chicago needs help.

Oh...CatchUp....CatchUp.....where are you? you may want to sit down, or at least have a wet towel handy.
I hear a rumour from RDS (French TSN)....Your unmentionable friend may be on his way to Montreal. Just a crazy rumour. In fact, now that I think about it...you probably started it.
Also Aucoin (known to Hawk fans as Augroin) may be on his way to Flemme town. Keenan loves this guy, and Adrian had his best year with Keenan in Vancouver, or at least came into his own. No word on who goes back, but likely not much Chicago wants rid of the salary. Could it be Huselius though? Keenan hates him from Florida....Nah would have to be something else go Calgary way.
This is heating up...like Trade deadline day.

That would be a dream come true. The only untouchables are Higgins and Price.batdad wrote:Oh...CatchUp....CatchUp.....where are you? you may want to sit down, or at least have a wet towel handy.

Oh-groin has waived his NTC to go to Calgary. That's a pretty weird acquisition by the Flames. Isn't 2008 on their minds at all? You'll have to sign Regehr, Phaneuf, Kipper and Iginla.

Hard to say... I don't think $6.3 million for Timonen is all *that* horrible -- it's the length of the deal that makes me gobruins72 wrote:Most definitely! Look back a page or two. That Timmonen deal is certainly a head-scratcher.I think they overpaid both Timmonen and Hartnell. At least Hartnell wasn't as far out of whack as Timmonen.

Hartnell is basically getting what Horton is getting. I don't know about you guys, but if I had to choose between the two I'd take Horton any day of the week and twice on Sunday. And no, it's not only because he almost always turns into God in EHM -- he's bigger, better, and younger than Hartnell, so I don't see how you could lose there.

Aucoin to Calgary?
Don't the Flames already have issues with D-men that are a bit too slow for the new league? So the Flames will pay 4M$ for a slow Dman that played only 92 games in the last 2 years...
And like systemfel mentionned, Regehr, Phaneuf, Kipper, Iginla... It will be hard to re-sign all of them. So all in all this Aucoin's deal doesn't look good...
Just wait to see who'll go to the Hawks...

I've been reading rumors saying that the Bruins are frontrunners to get Manny Fernandez. I've also read stuff saying that the Nucks have offered Bourdon to the Bruins (no idea who they're asking for in return). One of the other rumor stories going around is Marleau going to the Bruins. And the last one I heard is Montreal wanting to trade up to get the Bruins #8 pick. I hear they're offering their two first rounders.
Jeez, I feel like a Toronto or Montreal fan with all these rumors.

Except, I think you'll get more "results" at the end, they may be good or bad, but you'll get something.bruins72 wrote:I've been reading rumors saying that the Bruins are frontrunners to get Manny Fernandez. Nothing else???Systemfel wrote:The Hawks are getting Andrei Zyuzin in exchange for Aucoin.
Hmm... I don't know what to think of this one... Sure, Aucoin is far better than Zyuzin. But on the other side, he's far more expansive and overpaid...
However, with the insane prices we're about to have on the FA market for Dmen, Aucoin's 4M$ is maybe not that bad afterall

Aucoin=Salary dump to go after Briere, Drury or Gomez...since the Hawks apparently are having difficulty resigning Handzus. I think they want Drury. Dale Tallon is coming out of his shell, and is making some great moves to prepare for July 1.
Traverse rocks! Bwah!
Dave Nonis is all over the place right now...he really wants another draft day splash..and to free up some cash. Morrison may go, or Ohlund, or anyone but Kesler since he can't be moved til September apparently.
The BOston rumour is supposedly Bourdon for a "vet"...likely either Glen Murray or Marco Sturm. However...Nonis says prospects for young players only. SO the young player could be: (media here is suggesting this) Patrice Bergeron. That would be crazy...but us possible if Boston is promoting Kessel to get him the big minutes.
Marleau likely to the East so it is not out of the realm of possibility that he ends up in Montreal or Boston. I hear Fernandez rumour too, and with Backstrom and Harding in Minny...I am not surprised.
I love today. Draft day so much fun!!

It is kinda strange being an avs fan atm, I mean all those years of big moves and tons of rumours and now nothing barely happens at all heh. Not that it is a bad thing, since the team is going in the right direction certainly and it is fun to sit back and watch all the risky moves the other team makes.
About the salery cap, no it is certainly not wasted or useless as some of you seem to suggest, just look at what kind of teams are actually handing out the big contracts. The likes of Florida, to a degree Boston, Anaheim etc didnt or couldnt do that pre lock out and it is has temporary handcuffed Rangers, Avs and Wings etc.
Really dont see how there is any problems to the parity of the league as long as it doesnt go above 50ish mill.
I just hope avs sign/trade for a good ufa defensive defenseman and a grit forward along with a few minor trades perhaps, really like how the team has been handled under Giguere so confident/optimistic about the draft/off season

Draft day is almost as much fun as the first day of the free agency frenzy and the trade deadline. In some ways, it's better. In addition to all the trades, there's also all the drafting.batdad wrote:Aucoin=Salary dump to go after Briere, Drury or Gomez...since the Hawks apparently are having difficulty resigning Handzus. I can't see Boston giving Vancouver Murray, Sturm, or Bergeron for Bourdon. I know he was a first round pick but I hear they're not thrilled with his progress in Vancouver. I'd give them either somebody from the farm team or maybe one of our 3rd or 4th liners and a pick. Plus, Murray's name is one being mentioned in a deal with San Jose for Marleau. Could the Nucks even afford to take on the salary for one of those 3? As for Bergeron... there will be a lot of angry Boston fans if they get rid of him.

But you are not the GM. And Bourdon has struggled...but he is still listed as a top 3 guy in the next 5 years by anyone and everyone. His projection has toned down from the next Bobby Orr to just another common player, who is possibly an NHL all star.Ican't see Boston giving Vancouver Murray, Sturm, or Bergeron for Bourdon. I know you may not give up Murray or Sturm...but that is the talk. Maybe Bruins fans have another Milbury? There is also speak of draft pick involvement in the trade. Bergeron has been mentioned several times. It ain't a minor leaguer being talked about at all. It is a roster player, and a good, youngish one likely...I dunno.
Sorry but that be the truth.

Leafs acquire Toskala and Mark Bell for draft picks, including Toronto's 1st rounder.
Interesting deal for the Loafs. What does this mean for Raycroft?
