I'm interested in the answer to this as I have signed him as well! I would love to have him not count :joy:

As a side suggestion: In future challenges, allow the players to choose their own core rather than choosing from pre-determined groups. We would still have the core restrictions of playing and not trading those players, but we could set up our team how we want. I think this would encourage players to maybe sacrifice the first season or two (due to having to play young core members) to create a stronger core for the future.

I thought he could be UFA too, but prefered to ask in case of. Don't know yet if i'll keep him as he counts... I still have 6 months to decide myself :D

Hypnotist: Well...the pre-determined groups are here to more or less force you to have players you may not really want usually. So usually you never discover those players nor how to handle with that kind of players. Groups force you to deal with them and learn how to get the best out of them, which i think is more...well...challenging? :D

Eeliminating the groups would just cause a lateral shift in which players you "discover". You would still have to choose 1/2 your roster prior to the season but give us the flexability to choose the direction of the team early on. Are you going to go with a youth movement and getting them OJT (and suffer through a year or two of growing pains) or stick with more of a veteran presence to let your prospects develope down on the farm. Or somewhere in between.

Or maybe make each roster player available in a group. One of my questions was why wasn't Handzus part of a group. He would have a much higher trade value than say Bourque and whom would have put in the core other than Bourque.

Something else I would look at is a great disparity in the games played requirement between the groups. If you choose someone to go into the "A" group, make them play a full (70 games) season right from the start. The only real issue I ran into with the GP requirement was 2 group "C" guys. Other than that, everyone else in the core I knew was going to play a full season, barring injuries. Just my take.

To allow some flexibility, Handzus was not put in the groups. Neither was Lapointe. Both do have trade value, but they also bring value to the team. Especially Handzus, who at 2.5 million dollars, continually scores more points than virtually every other player in the NHL for me. With the exception of his Left Winger.

So...you can trade Michal but virtually every player you could deal him for is either

1. Not ready for the NHL quite yet

2. A much bigger contract value.

Or you can keep him and have him do well. Sticking him in the groups...and everyone would have picked him, no matter which group he was in. We want varied teams.

As it has turned out there are 2 players that virtually everyone picked (all but 1) as part of their first year core. Only 2. And 1 guy was only picked once.

The shock of this is who these players are:

Picked: Duncan Keith, Denis Arkhipov
Not Picked (1 time): Cam Barker

Not one player has the same core as any other team, in any season so far. This is awesome..showing flexibility....yet noone running away with anything.

however, I am looking at the numbers who win Pres Trophy and Cup the first season, and am wondering if this is too easy a method, and it actually needs to be a little more dificult, not easier....At the same time though, this just may be the team

We wanted flexibility, not to harrangue people. The groupings do that. I will absolutely guarantee you that without the groups and just saying pick 10 you would have virtually every player in this challenge with

1. Havlat
2. Ruutu
3. Vrbata
4. Handzus
5. arkhipov
6. Aucoin
7. Seabrook
8. Lapointe
9. Barker
10. Sharp

You would never see anyone, and I mean anyone..playing wiht Hamilton, Holmqvist, Vandermeer, Cullimore, Lalime, BOucher. or any of the prospects the Hawks have in their system other than maybe Toews.

The fourth liners on this team would not exist. And many of them are decent fourth liners. Hamilton and Holmqvist have done well for me and even played some third line. They would have been my first to go.

Do you see why we have the groups now? So we do not have super teams. Now...I know I say this after I post a 40 game record at like 33-3-4 but when you see my next 20 you will see (12-7-1)...

This way lots of flexibility but not too much. The other way (which we tested) would be way too much of everyone having the same teams.

So far we are seeing all of these guys play...and play quite well. Everyone has different line ups. Noone has stacked a team without breaking the rules and costing themselves in one way or another.

Hypnotist: I hope you see these reasons and understand why it was done this way. You, B72 and I...may get it and pick different players ... but some times you have to make sure of things. These rules at least partially, make the challenges and the EHM gaming experience more of a challenge.

As for the games played thing---we shall see what happens with that. We also did not want to turn players off of the rules in the first go at it in droves. So far...so good. We have more players playing in this challenge, than we ever have I think. So all is good...all is good.

Okay..so the above is the long explanation of how the rules came to be.

Now...you can make any suggestions you want for future challenges here. Please do so.

However, the rules for this one are the way they are. People have questions, and get answers fine.

For instance Shadd and Garlock..good ?...why? because it is an individual situation...but common sense should prevail on that one and has.

Was Garlock Chicago property at any time in EHM 2007? No...so therefore..he is UFA. Simple question..simple answer. But food for thought.

From now on questions about rules for this challenge will be answered with common sense by me one of the other mods. No long explanations.

Suggestions for future challenge rule changes are great,... and we will take them under advisement. Please continue to post them here.

However..unlike my above post, we will not justify why we made the rules the way we did...that has been done a 100 times now.

Oh..and not saying Hypno's questions were bad..they were not. They were actually very good...and thanks.\

Remember the mods running the challenge: Calv, B72, myself (with Minstrel's help a bit behind the scenes) have experienced many, many of these challenges. Especially Minstrel and B72. So when we set a rule there is usually a reason...something that makes the game a little harder. They are not random..they are things we have thought made the game a little more challenging, while still leaving you as the GM alot of flexibility.

Sorry if my questions seem a little bit daft (just incase you feel they have been explained well enough).

I am thinking of starting this challenge and I have re-read all the rules, I have noticed their is a few new rules, the main one is the Core roster players, I don't fully understand it even after reading the information.

At the start of the first season do we need to list 10 players who I will be playing for the majority of the time? Also is there any rules on how many I have to pick into each category? Also when I have chose my 10 players what type of screenshot do I need to show you? The squad list where it shows who has been picked of the tactic's screen showing you which line the player will be playing on.

The other thing is the trading restictions, I am not really in the know about the trade's and normally when I play a game I find it a bit hard to get the hang of with the 1st pick etc etc.

1. You must have at least 1 FIRST ROUND pick and 1 SECOND ROUND pick in every challenge season, that you use.
Does this mean I have to at least make a pick in the first and second rounds?

2. Your first and second round draft picks can only be used to trade up in the draft for the same season. They cannot be packaged to make an offer for another player.
So with this, when I offer a contract to a player does he have to join me before the current season starts? Also you are not allowed to trade away a player for a player?

3. As mentioned above…no trades on draft day allowed. This is because of the instant accept, allowing GM’s to work and work to get a player they really want, without having any time pass.
What do you mean by draft day? (Sorry this may sound a bit daft)

4. You may not trade away draft picks acquired for future seasons, until the season of that draft arrives.
So with this one, I can not trade away a draft pick for seasons 08-09 while in the current 06-07 season?

Thank you and once again sorry if you feel it is explained well enough.

Yes you must make at least 1 pick in both the 1st and 2nd round of the draft.
2. Your first and second round draft picks can only be used to trade up in the draft for the same season. They cannot be packaged to make an offer for another player.

You are not allowed to trade a player/prospect and your 1st round draft pick for another player/prospect. You are only allowed to trade your first pick for someone else's draft pick(if they have a higher draft pick than you)
3. As mentioned above…no trades on draft day allowed. This is because of the instant accept, allowing GM’s to work and work to get a player they really want, without having any time pass.

The day that the draft takes place
4. You may not trade away draft picks acquired for future seasons, until the season of that draft arrives.
So with this one, I can not trade away a draft pick for seasons 08-09 while in the current 06-07 season?
That is correct, in the first season you are only allowed to trade away draft picks for the 07 draft.

Except in season 2, where the Hawks have no 2nd round pick ;) But that's just a little detail :p

But we are allowed to trade down, right? :-? I mean, as long as we don't put other team players in the package, of course.

To pick up another asset (draft pick) and still get the guy you want. It's a bit of a gamble, but RL teams do it all the time.

I understand now and accept the reasons. I apologize if this has been covered before, but I haven't seen it and I've been keeping up to date on all posts here. Just trying to put my 2 cents worth of constructive criticism in. I'm having a lot of fun with this challenge and blogging it. Cheers, mate!

what about if you have 2 first round picks etc would you be able to trade one of them for a player or not. Example Trade player A for 1st rounder and player B. Trade deadline rolls around and you want to make a push for the cup and so you trade the 1st you received earlier in the season for player C.

AGain...rules are clear on this thunderbug. You cannot trade your own first pick for anything but trading up in the draft for another team's first. You cannot trade a first from a future draft, it must stay in the season.

There is nothing in the rules about trading a pick (that is for the draft immediately following the season you are in) of any sort that you got from someone else in another deal. So yeah...you can trade the pick you got from someone else...BUT YOU MUST HAVE A FIRST ROUND PICK that you can prove is either:

1. Your original pick
2. A pick you traded up/down for using your original pick.

CORRECTION: If you win the Stanley cup you get the 30th & 60th pick. If you win the President's Cup but do not win the Stanley, you get the 29th & 59th picks, thus allowing you to trade down. :-p Neener-Neener-Neener :-D

Do we need to create a second stats screenie if we had a net minder in the Core to show his Minutes Played?

No. I can figger that out. Games times average minutes per game...takes 2 seconds. But glad finally someone thought of that. :-D

That's fine, but if a net minder plays 1 second of a game, it counts as a game played in the stats. So using your method, a person could have just started his core net minder in each of the first 35 games and replaced him at the first whistle. This would give the net minder 35 GP, but prolly aboot 15 minutes of ice time. I've got the screenies and my save game backed up so I'm covered.

Yep and 35 times 15 is not good enough to meet any criteria in the game. That is only 525 minutes. To make even the lowest minute marks you would have to play a full 35 games...60 minutes in each one. Or 70 games of 30 minutes. Tis just math.

If you want to play a sieve for 1 period per game 20 minutes....he would have to play 20 minutes for 105 games in the regular season to meet the 2100 minute requirement. That is the lowest one...so nope not worried. :-D

Math rules! At least without letters.
