Not coaching your games

Post by Otso »

Hi, since I'm horrible at making tactics I like just to be the GM, and let my Head Coach do the games. I'm on my 4th season now, with the Ottawa Senators, and doing rubbish. I've had three Head Coaches, the first one, Marc Crawford and
Ulf Weinstock

Image

First year, I made it to the first round of the playoffs, and havn't been there since. I was ranked 5th in the NHL season preview last year, while finishing 12th in the eastren conference. This year I was ranked second and after 18 games, I'm 12th with a record of 8-8-1.

I have such players as Zdeno Chara, Jason Spezza, Sam Gagner and Dany Heatley.

Is it just my Head Coaches or can you get good results when not coaching your games.

I've won back-to-back Stanley cups while letting Marc Crawford coach my Thrashers. Are you making sure the players you have fit the playing style of the coach? Who's your goalie (in EHM, the most important player on the team)?

I'm successfull although I don't coach games. I had Crawford, Granato, Keenan. All did their job fine, I've always made playoffs and won one Stanley cup.
I set my lines and tactics, only not coach the games. That can be the difference to your style of play, Otso. What are your GM options (use current tactics, line, roster...)? Maybe assistant GM plays some role in it.

Well, as I got really widdled after losing 2-7, I fired my Head Coach and signed Glen Hanlon, who's got nice stats and plays a direct game. I don't know how my players fit, but I tend to favor young players and have a lot of good prospects in storage.

I'm still 12th, 15-16-2 record, and number 19 on goals allowed. Number one being the team with the least goas allowed.

Here's my goalie, first year at the team

I have Karri Rämö as my backup, he's a nice prospect.
I had Brian Boucher last year, with a 0.892 SV% and 7.92 Av R

You think I should trade a goalie?

Here's my Roster and Team report

Nevermind this, I just got fired after losing 9 games in a row. It seems your Head Coach cant coach the games.

I don't have good experience with letting the coach select lines. I think he selects them too simply. In my opinion they just order LW/C/RW, defensmen a goalies, sorted by some attributes and then the coach makes the lines. But he doesn't create for example checking line or some specific line matching and so on... This causes that you will have your good defensive forwards in 4th line and play 3-5 minutes per game instead of playing them agains opponent's top line.
Another negative thing is that he rarely lets your starting goalie rest and so on...

He did actually let my goalies rest, Krizan played 27 games and Rämö 12. Rämö was a regular and Krizan a Key Player.
Right now I'm very widdled since in two or three years I would've gotten my picks to play full time minutes, and that's what I was looking forward to.

Now I'll start with a team that has a solid goalie, and see how things turn out.

Sorry for the post spam, but I just realised I could start from and older save. So I started a few weeks back, still doing naff and got traded Niittymäki, for Karol Kristan and a washed up Niclas Wallin. First game, we won 3-1 but Niittymäki got injured for about 10 days, my luck hasnt changed it seems. Karri Rämö played a 9 in the game, so I have some of still getting back on my feet.

LOL, this thread turned out to be my whine/angst diary. Sorry for that, if someone has advice I could still use it!

I've had the opposite result.

I've won cups with pens & buffalo with headcoach doing pretty much everything.
But i still havent won anything doing the tactics and lineup myself haha ;)

Bad dept and just a good goalie in Krizan, nothing more. Needed better dept and start using Ramö(franchise goalie on this game).

God, if only that were possible. I always wished I could see the tactic used by the other team, especially when they're kicking the snot out of me, but alas, we cannot.

That is possible, in Winnipeg Jets DB, which i downloaded from my friend, had preset tactics to use. Some manager game you can do it via Pregame editor, but no ''Show preset tactics'' in editor tools. Sorry my bad english, iam just youngster from Finland. :dunno:

Sometimes i look at my opponents tactics before the game but most often i let myself surprise. It's more exiting when i don't know their tactics and can't match them. :-)

Even though I coach the games myself, Randy Carlyle still won the Jack Adams, which i'm not happy about. I wanted my name on that Trophy. There should be a trophy for the best GM too!!! :-D

even if you coach games yourself, though - your coaching staff still matters.

Changing an assistant coach to another one with high motivation and discipline and my fortunes completely turn around. The team plays the full 60 minutes - no getting 2-3 goals in the first and second periods then letting in 4 in the third and keeps shots against a lot lower. I didn't change tactics or players, just assistant coach.

Same thing happened before with head coaches - I fired Ron wilson and hired bob hartley - my team started playing a lot better right away and the board got off my ass.

I usually let the head coach control the team during a game, but he uses my tactics. As long as a I have a coach who likes an aggressive style it works well with my tactics and I usually have success.
