I'm not sure why they're making this so big and secretive. Hasn't this been known for a while?
At least, it was here in Philadelphia... for several days, it was all over our sports news a few weeks ago: Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Bruins, 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway.
But hopefully they sneak-in a bettman firing. It'd be nice if they told us ahead of time, though... I'd certainly make the trip up to Boston to see that. Then I could laugh in his face personally... even if it would be from the other side of the stadium, I'm sure it'd echo it's way over to his dumb bobbling head.
It's definitely the Winter Classic. They really should have had it versus the Rangers if they're doing it at Fenway so they could play off the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry. Anyhow, I've heard it's either going to be against the Flyers or the Capitals.
I live in a suburb of Boston and I'd really love to go to the Winter Classic but it's just not in the cards for me. My wife is pregnant with twins and she'll be due sometime around then (if she doesn't go even early and have them before that). She'd kill me if I went to the game and possibly miss the kids being born.
Thanks, Laker! I haven't heard anything about a college outdoor game too but that would be pretty cool.
Bruins - Habs would be great because of the rivalry but I don't think they wanted to have Montreal be in it this year is because they're one of the few teams that have already played one of these outdoor games. I think they're trying to get others a chance.
After the Fenway game they will have had NHL games at the two oldest baseball parks in the US. The choice to do it at Fenway is purely because of that history. A better location for occupancy, comfort, and exposure would be the New England Patriots home, Gillette Stadium. Then again, the Patriots could be still playing at that point and I'm sure making the field usable for hockey does a number on the grass.
A hockey game at Fenway Park will be priceless! I don't like the Bruins but since i'm a fan of the Sox, it will be great to see hockey instead of baseball in Fenway Park.
It's official! The Bruins have made the announcement that they will play the Flyers at Fenway Park on January 1st 2010!
It looks like they're using this to sell season tickets. I got an email from the Bruins announcing the game and it says "Don't miss out on this unique opportunity" and that "Tickets to this game will be in high demand!". Season ticket holders are guaranteed the chance to buy tickets.

I don't get the whole outdoor game... Sure it's cool when it snows in the middle of an NHL game... But i don't see the huge attraction. Maybe i'm not an American/Canadian Hockey Fan and over in England the main sport is soccer... I just don't see the major attraction...

It's 97 years old and one of the 2 oldest stadiums in the country (the other being Wrigley Field, I believe). There is a whole lot of history there. Sure, it's baseball history but it's hallowed ground to many. It's one of the few remaining unique venues. Most everything else has been replaced with these new stadiums that all seem alike and have no character.

It brings us back to our roots of pond hockey or using the school's outdoor rinks. For those of us growing up in climates that had cold winters, being outside in the snow for hours on end was just a natural thing. Playing hockey outdoors is how a lot of us played hockey for many years.
An outdoor game brings back those memories for fans and players alike. Thats why its cool.

Ahh i see. I'm so jealous i didn't have the chance to play on ponds and stuff!
The closest thing i've came to pond hockey was the local guinea pig testing to see if the canal had frozen over enough for us to stand on. And him going through it! Great times... Not for him, he nearly froze!

LOL, yeah where I am from (Winnipeg) the city tested out areas where skating was ok. In 2008 they broke the world record for the longest skating rink, 8.54 kilometres. There is one park with a creek they they clean off and liht up nice, and on a calm winter night its a nice place to go for a skate with your date. The park is pretty, and you can see the stars in the sky, then go inside for hot chocolate and warm up.
If you want to experience it you can always move to a nice and cold climate for the winter.
