To clarify, how do you guys start making your tactics for a new team? Do you have a template of some sort wich you the change depending on team strengths, or do you just a get a vision by looking at your players?

I have several set ups depending on team strengths. From there I'll tweak it to fit the particular team.

Im pretty new to the game and am just trying to set up my tactics i think i have got my skill lines sorted but having trouble setting tactics for my checking line the players i have are as follows:

LW: Ladd C: Sutherby RW: Neil

The line rating is as follows:

Offense: ***
Defence: ****
Speed ****
Toughness ****

What should i set the tactics of this line to, to make it a defensive checking line?

Got no real answer for you darren :(
I've only had success with big hard hitting players in my checking lines... (currently using d.scatchard, w.primeau, p.gaustad)
(Agressive/berserk, hard/very hard hitting, heavy puck pressure, very hard backchecking & def/very defensive mentality) ofc this tactic will result in penalties, so practice your PK accordingly.

What i need know is how to use defensive forwards that are small and smart.(like Ortmeyer) My Checking players always get lots of hits, but never any takeaways. What line tactics and personal tactics are used for such players?

Darren - Ladd is more than a checking line player for me. He is my 1st line LW and has 80+ points the last few year. He's a great power forward.

I'd look into the guide to make sure you are setting your tactics for how you want your line to play. Make sure backchecking is high. You might also want to control the tempo. Slowing things down could help minimize the other team's possessions. Takeaways are a product of pokecheck more than anything. You probably want to use conservative forechecking and then amp up the pressure in the neutral zone to slow down the progression. I'd also use an offensive tactic that will limit breakouts by keeping the forwards at or near the faceoff circles. You can also DNC (dump n chase) if your guys have some speed. I'd make sure your D-men are not joining the rush and probably do the same with forwards.

With that being said, I've got questions about hits. I'm constantly outhit yet still have more PIMs as a team. Any thoughts on how to improve the hits without increasing PIMs?

Does line matching only work in home games? According to the NHL rules, the away team has to pick a line first.

Btw, I think matching lines can be very useful when the opponent has a slow, weak checking line. If you send your best offensive line against them, they can score very easily.

I also noticed that the computer uses the 1vs3, 2vs2, 3vs1, 4vs4 matching very often. You can notice that when it starts the game with its 3rd line. I had 2 games in a row, which were started by my 1st unit scoring 2 goals against their 3rd in the first 2 shifts of the game, so in 30 seconds...

I think I found the answer to my above question (Increasing hit without increasing PIMS)

Setting tactics to either normal or defensive instead of offensive has improved the play of my team quite a bit. My first line is set to offensive, but my second line is set to normal. We're still not outhitting other teams, but the hits are increasing and teams are getting fewer shots on goal. Ward is out for a week and my backup Ouellete has stepped in and won two games, mainly cause he's only had to face 20 or so shots each game. The change in tactics does not seem to have impacted the productivity of my 2nd line as Gomez (my #2 center) is in the top 25 for scoring, despite only getting 2nd line time and 2nd line PP time. His wingers are Fehr and Pominville.

Something to think about, cutting back on the offensive emphasis to improve defensive play.

Thanks a bunch. I honestly didn't know there were default tactics. I thought there was only one general default :oops: .

Hello everyone!

I'm currently having a blast with my challenge team and I'm in the process of trying to develop a personalized personal tactic roadmap for my club. The goal was to establish a simple structure to help me put all my players in the same frame of reference. I also wanted to bypass default unit tactics and change players from line to line instead. Thx to EHM guide and this discussion for inspiration! This roadmap is subject to change and their effectiveness will change depending on the line's tactical positioning and general team's option.

Personal tactic format

Attribute rating
1-7: Weakest setting (1/5)
8-9-10-11: Second weakest (2/5)
12-13-14: Normal setting (3/5)
15-16-17: High setting (4/5)
18-20: Highest setting (5/5)

Criterias

Mentality: Look in the player's scout report. Defensive player = defensive. Two way = neutral. Offensive = offensive. Scout's career role might influence it a bit (a career checker with a two way game might get a defensive setting instead of the normal one)
Aggressiveness: Look at aggressiveness attribute
Backchecking: Look at acceleration, speed, stamina and checking attributes
Gap control: Look at acceleration, speed and positioning attributes
Puck pressure:Look at checking and pokecheck attributes
Hitting: Look at hitting and strength attributes
Tempo: Look at acceleration, speed and stamina attributes
Passing: Look at passing and creativity attributes
Shooting: Look at Slapshot + Wristshot. Low at both lowers the setting. High at both elevates the setting. Low wrist + high slap, I follow the slapshot setting up to barrage. Low slap + high wrist lowers the setting to get more quality and precision at the cost of volume.
Dumping the puck: Depend on the line's role. Not personalized.

Shoot/Pass bias: Strongest skill. Career role in scout report can influence the decision. There must at least be 1 passer and 1 shooter per line, ideally of opposite hand side.
Fighting: strenght, aggression and value of player

Carry puck: Deking + stickhandling
Join rush: Look at acceleration, speed and off the puck attributes

So - this personal format - I can clarify my Tactics with granularity - if I am picky and specify each tactic per "leve" Team, Line, Individual - will they play based on each level I go down to? So if I set a line tactic, but each player has their own specific orders - do they follow the line tactic? Their specific tactic? or do they try to blend it?

When you specify individual tactics for each player, they follow them instead of the general line tactics. If you want them to follow certain individual tactics but otherwise just follow the line tactics, you can just leave the check box blank next to that setting in the individual tactics and they'll default to following whatever you set the line to do. I know sometimes I'll just individualize only certain things like hitting, passing, shoot/pass preference, join the rush, and carry the puck. I'll leave the other items alone and just have them follow the line settings.

After reading various tactic threads, training threads, tweaking, honing, adjusting, fiddling over and over. My Redwings (using the Lidas 1.3 roster) are just pummeling everything in sight. The PP is not as effective as I'd like but I have some off handed players. Overall we are just suffocating people, playing up high, high pressure for 3 liens and taking the bodies to the boards with the 4th.

I would go into details but this isn't the thread - I just want to give a big thanks to everyone, especially those grumpy ones who make people read and learn for themselves - without that I would probably be playing some cookie cutter hockey still.

Usually I do tactics myself and by talking with a friend, for each team depending on their strengths, but...well, this team will be a bit of a challenge. It's a bad team. A very bad team. As in, worse than any team you'd expect to see in the NHL, even in EHM where sometimes a team will *really* screw up. And it's an NHL team, so facing stiff competition.

Not really that strong at all, nor that fast overall. Especially weak defensively, weak offensively though not as bad. We do have a good goalie tandem. Explaining *why* the team is so bad would take some explaining, but suffice to say the situation will improve later on. But I'm wondering if anybody has any tactics idea...not to win games, but to avoid blowouts and at least help the score resemble something close.

My first thought was, because of the goalies being good and thinking that the best way to keep from being blown out would be to keep the scores low, to play a defensive style on all lines. But, the players' inability to play defense has, so far, rendered that plan pretty...bad. I'm not really too interested in winning games this season (in fact, it's actually probably best if we finish quite low in the NHL), I just want to keep players from having absolutely horrible morale, which might stunt their development, and I figure that aside from winning games, one way to prevent that would be to at least keep from being absolutely destroyed pretty much every night.

The 3-2/1-1-3 or 2-1-2 were the key tactics in turning my team from a regular playoff team into Stanley Cup champs. My team had always been able to score, but never able to crank up the D. In Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals, I made the full out change with my top lines and the results were crazy. Here are my lines

Ladd-Stall-Hossa
Pominville-Gomez-Fehr
Lehtinen-Roy-Hartnell
Crombeen-Betts-Dingman

Niedermyer-Eminger
Martin-Kulyash
Vaananan-Morrison

In the finals, we swept Columbus and outscored them 22-7. They had a lot of trouble getting the puck down ice for shots. Without a true lockdown line, these tactics seemed to work best. I suggest trying them out as they can help slow down good offensive teams and lead to a good number of shots, especially if you have talented offensive players. With my team, it's more of a finesse defensive tactic instead of use the body to get the puck. I got outhit every game, but put up over 40 shots a game while they got 20. It also seems to frustrate the other team into more penalties which can also account fo the shot differential.

Is there any good tactic i can download from the site ? there is a " Load Tactic " In the game and that need to be the one you use for downloaded tactics ? :-p

See this section of Downloads storage. But every tactics needs a lot of tweaking for your specific team...

hey guys im trying to do something new, i always do offense first and always have pretty good success. now ive been trying to do a defensive tactic and having alot of trouble, im getting killed every game, even with a solid defencive team. i was hoping someone could post a tactic that they have had success with. thanks

Well I'm successfull with this tactics. See the last 5 screenshots and do some tweaking in order to fit it to your team.

Hello. Made a killing tactic, that brought me 2 consecutive art ross/Rocket richards, saved the tactic, got new comp, lil bro uninstalled ehm and now I'm screwed. Hahah, I try to make something up again. :doh:

Usually those things aren't deleted on an uninstall. Even if the game is gone, there is a good chance you'll be able to find the file still on the computer. Unless you saved them elsewhere, the default location is...

C:\Documents and Settings\bill.GCAP\My Documents\Sports Interactive\EHM 2007\tactics

Or you could just run a search for *.tct and see what comes up.

Of course this is all assuming you have a Windows-based computer and not a Mac.
