International Transfer salaries

Post by maxrsp »

I'm sure this has been asked before because it is a relatively basic question but I couldn't find an answer despite several different searches...

When playing as an NHL team and looking to sign an available player from overseas, I am wondering what happens to the salary for the current year? In other words, since I have to wait for the next internation transfer window (in say July) then the player will not be playing for me during the current season, yet when I signed him there was obviously an amount allocated to the current season. Am I paying him even though he isn't playing for me yet?

Thanks!

The actual signing of the player does not officially occur until the date they are available. Therefore, the player and the player's salary do not count towards your roster limit or salary cap hit until that date. This also means that at any time up to that date, you can withdraw the offer. Hope that answers your question

One more thing on this, though. If for some reason the player gets released prior to that date, then the transaction occurs immediately at that time, which can sometimes be at an inconvenient time for you during the season.

Thank you for confirming my suspicion!

Edit:
Just to doublecheck: Does it count if it's after the hockey season but before it changes the new seasons off-season? (What a mess of season!)
That sucks pretty bad and I had that happening quite often but never remembered to check if it counted.

What about the contract year? If you sign a player to a 3 year deal and he transfers over before July 1st, does that count as one year of his contract? Are you essentially only getting 2 years out of him instead?

From what I've seen, I think that is the case...the first year of the contract is used up if signed prior to July 1st.

While we're on the subject, when does the international transfer period end?

I think it is like a week or so that you have before the period closes again, but I could be wrong.

Yeah I hate that, you always lose a year of their contract

I think I remember trying to sign a player in Russia who was released and then having to cancel the transfer to offer him the contract all over again. I might have completely lost it or it could just be my game though. Does anyone else have that problem?
