Post by BlazingWing »

I was just wondering, since I sometimes to forget to turn the option off, has anyone found a decent player out of those?

I'd like to see Happy Gilmore show up to open try-outs. :-p

Seriously though... I've never had anyone worthwhile show up to open try-outs. I always try to make sure to remember to turn them off.

I think I've maybe once signed a player thru open try outs in the Finnish SM-liiga. But on general rule, I also try to remember to click it off. There are better ways to sign players.

I had Brad May showing up in the open tryout once. He was at the end of his career though. I signed him and let him play half of the season on the fourth line, later I had to send him down to the minors to make room for a good prospect. But he did surprisingly well, playing with Tootoo and some other guy. Was fitting well with the tactics, I guess.

I've signed one, but that was in Swedish Elitserien, never in NHL.

Now I always try to remember to turn open try out off.

I have too in SM-league, but they have been players like Mika Halava or Mika Viinanen, and i have made contracts cause they are ok players to 4th line (especially they are cheap). In real life, Viinanen is much better than in EHM rosters (not sure about latest, cause i haven't played it yet).

In one of my old saves a decent enforcer showed up. I signed him and he played for my ECHL team for a few years.

For the most part the open tryouts are nothing more than a nuisance. I hate it when I forget to turn it off and a bunch of naff players end up coming to my training camp and some of the prospects I invite can't come since there isn't enough room. :-x

Same here. I make it a point to turn off open tryouts the first second I see the training camp option appear.

I've made the mistake of keeping it on too many times. I hate having to clear my roster of guys who can't even score on my worst goalkeeping prospect, such a drag.

In Europe and juniors I have found many quality players but never in the NHL.

With Porin Ässät in SM-league, I brought my 3rd B-jrs goalie and he shut some of them totally. Like that you mean? :-D

In the Training Camp Overview screen, there is an Open Camp Button - click and choose 'No'

Playing as the Utah Grizzlies, I had Aaron Bader come to open tryouts since I had most of my Utah guys up in Bridgeport camp. Anyway I ended up signing Bader and he scored 86 points with Utah playing with Tony Romano and Ryan Kinasewich.

A year later, Bader is the captain of Utah, and has earned himself a contract from Bridgeport. (Still playing for Utah though)

I've never signed a player from an open tryout. If I need extra guys for camp (I like to run a full camp every year), I'll manually go invite some promising young guys to my camp to fill up the extra spots.

I run 4 teams. I always have enough guys to fill all 4 spots on the teams (I might be short 1 goalie sometimes) but I like to have the total number of players at camp so I can run different guys in different games.

I start my pre-season September 1 with an overseas Rookie Tour, and then start cutting from there.

I do something similar as well. Except i'll throw in a young veteran(21-26) out on each line for some stability. Sweden and Finland are the places i end up the most.
